I like that on the second attempt Quade even tells Reg which way he's going to go. I wouldn't have gotten close but. Not only that, but I probably would've broken something trying.
exactly. I must admit I thought to myself before the first tackle, "I'll take it easy, I don't want to hurt him once I tackle him". Then he made me look a fool. So he tells me which way he will go next and my clearest memory is when he planted his right leg, and seeing this massive muscle appear on his thigh and think "fuck, what's that' and then he made me look the fool again. At least I dived then. Think I touched him

Is James 'Big Kev' Horwell playing the role as skipper the right way? He certainly leads the team by personal example, of that there can be no doubt. But does he have the required 'smarts' as a captain.
I'm thinking in some recent games where he persists with going for the try, when a tasty 3 points could be the way towards victory. Do it twice and you have more points than an unconverted try.
The games against the Brumbies and the Force come to mind.
It may be that he was playing under a game plan, but the captain should be able to make his own decision in this regard.

Horwill is a brilliant leader, but I completely agree about not being a great captain. Honestly, the Reds are lacking in that department.
Slipper is a decent captain but his game drops like crazy when he takes that role, even worse than Benn Robinson. Genia just doesn't inspire the forwards and his playing the ref is almost as bad as Burgess.
The best captain (not leader, captain) I have seen from the Reds in the last two years is Adam Wallace-Harrison. Not a bad leader either, just not worth replacing Simmons or O'Donoghue to have him though.

I think the Reds captaincy problem has been Genia asserting too much influence and continually pushing Horwill to kick for the corner and go for the try. Horwill just needs to tell Genia who the boss is

Can't have a captain who listens to nobody (Eg. JOC (James O'Connor)), can't have a captain who makes no decisions for themselves (Eg. Benn Robinson). Big Kev just needs to look at Conrad Smith and try to emulate his captaincy.
Eg. Don't point to the sticks unless the kicker says he can kick it, don't kick for the corner if there's 3 seconds left and you are behind by 2.

I like Kev as captain. Like others have said though he needs to tell Genia to chill out sometimes. I also think it's a team mentality at the moment. I'd love to see them work into good field position and if the try isn't coming just kick a field goal and turn around and work back down the field. It's as though they have read their own press and think they are some great attacking rugby team. They need to have the balance right. They did in 2011 but haven't since.

Given Quade's knee surgery last year, do you know if he does this sort of stepping at training now (the really big ones like in that video), or is there an alternative training regime for guys who have had surgery recently?

Can a rugby genius explain why the reds are stuttering at the moment? I cannot pick the issue as they seem to be defending well and making line breaks but they just aren't pulling it all off like they used to. Boring against the stormers as well and seem to have lost that reds touch that we have only seen glimpses of this season. Maybe an issue with RG? Although it seems as though EM is still very much at the wheel. Not an individual either, its a team thing.

In this particular match..
1) Handling issues killed most of the plays after a half-break or break was made
2)Line outs and restarts were an absolute mess and killed the Reds all game long, it's hard to launch an attack through the backs off of a front-pod ball or no ball at all
3) The breakdown work by the Reds (with the exception of Gill) was uncharacteristically sloppy and slow, this caused multiple turnovers (I think there were 3 or 4 within 5-10m of the Stormers line) which gutted any attacking momentum and also really hurt us defensively as well. I think Link was hedging against Saia performing well at the breakdowns when he selected Samo at 8. Saia did not perform well and it showed.

Agree with you USARugger on the three points from last night.
I would also add we lack any deception outside of QC (Quade Cooper)'s channel. It looked as though if QC (Quade Cooper) didn't run the play, it would be a pass from other back to the next back. I don't agree with Deans regarding Taps being affected by QC (Quade Cooper) but there is definitely something amiss/lack of creativity outside him. Please don't put CFS to the wing next game, play Shipps instead (if he's not injured) when they make a change in the centres. Rocket did alright with what he had.
My other comment is how much will we miss Diggers next year, and how much are we missing Higgers now! With Higgers you didn't need Samo firing, and he had that little extra creativity that neither Gill, Quirk or Shatz have, to make something out of nothing. This match really showed what the loss of these two players has done (will do) for the Reds.
For the last 3 matches I would have Morahan run on 15, Lance on the bench. Shippers to wing if Diggers is injured. And hope like hell we beat the much-improved Rebels next week otherwise it's season over.
