DREW MITCHELL - a good sport.
Just want to give this bloke a wrap. Was at the Randwick V Uni match. He got back from NZ to play for Randwick and then stuck around and hung about for the after match function. He mingled freely and when urged to join the boat race, did so. That all could have been below him given his status in the game however he looked to be a real good club man.

Well Easts and Gordon have all the limelight this weekend - Only game on the long Weekend and a TV Game.

Who's going to be at Woolahra - anyone up for a GAGR #3rdtier meetup

The Highlanders might just upset Easts in this one.

Is there a City (SRU) vs Country game this long weekend (or this season) ?

IIRC it was played at Concord on the Saturday of the Long Weekend last year.

Don't think there is one this year due to Lions Tour

Given that the Lions Tour was known about before the season draw and I assume the decision to cancel the Sydney v Country game was also made a long time ago, why do we have this current split round and another split round in July (6/7 and 13/7)?

Why aren't we playing a 20 round comp or even 22 rounds (full home and away)?

Having spare weekends for weather catch up games doesn't seem to be a requirement in the NRL. Maybe they have more clout with the councils.

As I understand it, tc, and I may be wrong, the concept of "spare weekends for catch up games" is no longer relevant. Doesn't the SRU now require that postponed games be played during the following week?

I have no brief for rugby officialdom - certainly not in this State - but I'm wondering whether blame for dumb decisions might not be wholly attributable to the SRU hierarchy and that contributory negligence might also be ascribed to the representatives which the Clubs send along to its meetings.

Just saw the highlights of the Woodies against the Beasts. Bugger me, the Beasties scored some fabulous tries.

9 uni players in the run on Tah's team for Sunday's game v Force plus Talaki under consideration for the bench (Wallaby squad not available).

Wow!

I think it has to do with the Junior Rugby State Championships which has been held for the last 10years as a stand alone competition for the long weekend.

Correct Bruce Ross - As I found out when we played Manly - if the home team is washed out, the opposition can offer another ground to play on. Failing that the game has to be played prior to the following Sunday.

In round one we had to go to Manly as they offered an alternate playing field. In round 3 we had to postpone till Wednesday (or Tues - can't remember) against West Harbour.

Perhaps I'm a contributor to the dumb decisions Bruce refers too.

There are no games this weekend (well only 1 due to ABC requirements) because basically, people need a break. In the recent past, the Sydney v Country match has been played on this weekend yet it's not this year because a Combined Country is playing the Lions and from what I can remember (and I may need to be corrected on this) SRU couldn't afford to run a rep team this year.

There is also the break in grade competition on July 13 to allow the Colts competition to get a week ahead of grade. This is to ensure that the Colts players can get to the Shute Shield Grand Final Day and to also make sure that the last club game of the year to be played is in fact the Shute Shield Grand Final. This way Sydney Uni can have all players in attendance at the one venue on the same day.

Says it all, really. How can we expect to be taken seriously as a code? I could understand it if the CRU said they "couldn't afford to run a rep team", but seriously what sort of costs would be involved for the SRU? There would be plenty of Club grounds not being used this weekend; the players don't have to be paid; and you only have to assemble a squad for a couple of training runs.

Don't quote me on it though Bruce. As I said, I may need to be corrected on it.

But it is certainly no secret that neither the SRU or NSWRU have any cash. Uni and Southern Districts would each have healthier bank accounts than our 'governing' Unions.

Thanks for the explanation Belly.
But I would have thought the objective in your second para could have been achieved without the July split round simply by playing one less round in Colts or reducing the Colts playoffs to 5 or 6 teams instead of 8.

Could you imagine the complaints from the clubs and even on this site if that was the case?
