don't do reports. seeing some of the posts on facebook by players on the day though it didnt look like they fared too well against uni

Well you would actually. Tom Kingston was another of the boys who played Manly JNRs and colts. Obviously not after school though.

Peter Gilmore, currently injured, was also in that age group although may have been playing 12s.

Your right Pete Gilmore and BJ Hartmann as well. Not in that team but with Hingano and the current crop of Natoli, Hodge and Foketi plus Sefenaia(still cant believe he hasn't played more professionally), Hooper, Woodhouse , Lane, Milroy, Christie, Darcy, Reti and a returning Siale. If they don't do the usual Manly capitulation then they will be very difficult to match as a backline over the next few seasons.

That really is great to hear. That age group has some talent!

Hingano Natoli etc are examples of other guys who are now at Marlins but pre colts developed in large measure through the other "local nursery", St Augustine's College . There are several other local guys who are now contemporaries of the aforementioned Manly rep side players who came through that path and form part of the demographic 19 to 22 y.o bulge which will serve the MMM's well in the coming years as Lily suggests.

The points cap may impact Uni's ability to utilise all their players. They will have all grades in the playoffs but the points cap in 2nds will make it difficult for them to fit many S15 players into 2nd grade. As I said before, some of Uni's 30 or so S15 players won't play again this year unless it's for the Wallabies.

PS: Stirzaker is off to NZ to play in the ITM Cup for Manuwatu, and I doubt Burgess would qualify for the playoffs.

Coach was thinking the same as well, and wasn't sure of their discounts etc. so didn't go and try and work it out.

Does anyone know whether the Wallaby squad members that are not set to play against the ABs are to be released for Shute Shield this Saturday?

The 40 man squad gets cut to 30 this Friday so the unlucky 10 should be available for their clubs this weekend. Not sure when the actual team is named, but there was an announcement that the squad would be preparing for 2 weeks for the B Cup game on 17/8 so I assume that means the 30 will all be "preparing" and not available to their clubs.

From memory (might be a bit hazy) Gilmore played up a year until under 14's and BJ was older but Tom Kingston (Sydney Uni) and Ben Volavola (Southern Districts) played in the U'11's, 12, and 13's for Manly.. The team to beat was Gordon! and the Manly boys took the trophy in U'14's 2005!

From the games I've watched this year (live and on the ABC) I'd suggest there are 3 things that separate the top teams from the rest:
(1) shoulders into tackles v grabbing with hands
(2) drawing the defender and passing v trying to beat the tackle and when failing to do so throwing a wayward pass (everyone wants to be Sonny Bill!)
(3) running onto the ball / passing in front of the support player v receiving the ball flat footed

Not rocket science.

Obviously some teams simply have better players, but if you look at a team like Eastwood (no superstars) they do all of the above very well and are leading the comp.
