On Rugby HQ there was a comment that Link sees him as a 12, so thats where he could be slotting into the backline next year.

If he stays on the straight and narrow we could be in for some fireworks at the SFS next year!

Personally, I'm glad to see him back. Yes, he's been a bit of a dickhead, but it seems to me that he has an alcohol and discipline problem, rather than the JOC (James O'Connor)-esque egomania. I hope Cheika can help with the latter, because it's how to deal with the former too. We've all seen what Beale can do when he gets his shit together and -- astonishingly -- he's still only 24.

One-year contract is good for all concerned. If Beale goes off the rails or doesn't prove himself, he can go elsewhere or to the NRL and the Tahs can quickly move on.

i believe the comment about playing at 12 was with respect to JOC (James O'Connor) not KB (Kurtley Beale)

Link never saw him as a 12 before.
I also think it was referring to O'Connor.

I also heard it as JOC (James O'Connor) for 12 which will be interesting given Lilo is there atm. Beale to FB for mine.

EOYT will be interesting with all that backline competition.

Quality competition is not a bad thing for the Wobs, you also add Taps, Horne & Goodwin to the list

Kyle Godwin will be immense. I'm predicting he'll displace Lealiifano (or whoever) in the next 18 months.

Good to see him coming back to where he started off. Hopefully Cheika can get him on the straight and narrow and he can really flourish as a player once again.

The Tahs backline next year a very hard place to get a game, I can see why Kingston went south and hopefully he does well down there.

On a non-Tahs point - I see Godwin as our long-term option at 10. Bring him in at 12 if there are no options, but quite frankly Foley is fucking stupid if he doesn't shift him in late in the game next season for regular time.

Tahs backline next year:

9 Phipps - got to keep his passing game up as a priority
10 Foley
11 Folau - shifting to 13 late in the game to get used to it
12 Horne
13 AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) - his indestructibility needs managing so has a rest in the second half
14 Crawford - blindside winger is your second fullback. He's a fullback IMHO
15 Beale - for the counterattack coordination with Folau

21 Lucas/McKibbin
22 Lance
23 Betham

Tahs forwards

1 Robinson
2 TPN
3 Kepu
4 Douglas
5 Skelton
6 Dennis (c)
7 Hooper
8 Palu

16 Roach
17 Tilse (ugh - is there no-one better? Honestly?)
18 Ryan
19 Chapman
20 Fuck I dunno. Holloway? Cutch?

Strong back line, thinnest pack we've had a for a while.

If Beale goes into 15 and Folau goes to 11, he needs to have that Digby-style "roving commission" with Crawford playing the more traditional style.

I find it curious that it is only a one year contract. Though he does say he is looking forward to competing in the next world cup.

But, back to the one year contract; though they will be much improved and more Cheika's side this year, I still think it could be one season too early for them?? I can't see why they won't be the dominant aussie side by 2015 if they keep the cattle. I would have thought he would want to be there then.

Yeah the depth isn't great, but I have faith that Cheika will help players realise their potential. Ideally with that starting pack we'll have beaten six shades (and hopefully a seventh) out of the opposition by then and the replacements can have a bit of an armchair ride to show their wares.

But any injury to the tight five and we're in trouble.

Bingo - great minds think alike.

Crawford and Beale will effectively be playing sweepers depending on who is involved. Foley will also drop back occasionally depending on field position and kick chase duties from the back three.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was the Tahs who insisted on a 1 year deal, the last thing they want is for Beale to go off the rails again 6 months into a 3 year deal. Player welfare is important but the Tahs management probably have to look at Beale as a massive risk for a long term contract.

It could work in Beales favour as well, if he gets his personal issues sorted and gets back to his 2011 form he can get a larger ARU top up this time next year.

I'd suggest it is a deliberate move after the bullshit that went down in Melbourne. "You have a year to prove that you're really happy here. We're going into this as a partnership, not buying a star."

Good point, especially looking at Beale only played 14 games for the Rebels in 2 years due to various issues.

With a one year contract there's something in it for both parties.

If it doesn't go well then the Tahs have only taken a one year punt on him. They're not stuck with a player on their books they can't offload without paying out his contract and Cheika has a spot in his squad for a player that will contribute to the team.

Beale has probably taken a pay cut on this deal. So if it does work out he's in a much stronger position at the end of the year when it comes to renegotiating, not to mentioning the fact that there will be options elsewhere too.

So basically the Tahs get to hedge their risk while Beale has extra incentive for things to work out in the next year.

If this forward pack is so lightweight how come there is no place to fit Potgieter?

What bullshit would you be referring to exactly?

The whole time he was in Melbourne Daz, worse signing than DC in the end.

Wish him all the best in Sydney, hope he sorts his shit out and Cheika makes him work. Tahs struck a bargain with this one, two years and they can pay the guy less than when he left.

The Tahs just need a backup hooker, loosehead and lock to have an excellent 23. Incredible backrow depth.
