Typical day out at St Peters Iona dominate St Peters in every match, one game being 90-0 14s? until the 1st play then it's a different story how do they do it?
A typical St Peters backline will cause headaches this season.
Who is the 12 for Peters, a real handful player of the match.

its always a classic

but ive heard from a few people that peters have some sort of partnership with the brisbane broncos. and most of those lads are on some sort of contract with them. I think it is mainly for the PNG boys though. They bring them to aus and give them opportunity to study and play footy.

and yeah number 12 was the standout IMO. had a few missed passes outwide that found the side line but he has a good goal kick and is a solid runner with good skill. solid build on the kid too.

Lack of depth, numbers and size affects Peters teams in the lower age groups, take this years 16A's beaten by 7pts today but came home with a wet sail. This team was beat 101-0 by villa 2 years ago, same kids but bigger stronger etc, a couple of 16year olds were in firsts so these boys should be ok next year.

St peters are affiliated with the Broncos arent they? Hence they new players that appear in grade 12 to play rugby..?

yes they do, but actually a lot of the PNG boys have been there since grade 5 and 6. over heard a PNG mother talking about her son who was playing the firsts today saying that he moved to aus in grade 6 to board at peters.

Make ties with a community in PNG, bring in 10 boys from PNG and chances are 9 of them will be mint athletes. Its their Denisovan blood lines. Good business for any school that wants to excel at sport

Regarding the PADUA VS VILLANOVA game I heard a lot of talk around the villa centres. I went to that game hoping to see many line breaks by those two men, big hits and a few tries but I have to say these two centres were quite over rated and did very little to help their team get over the line.

Regarding the PADUA VS VILLANOVA game I heard a lot of talk around the villa centres. I went to that game hoping to see many line breaks by those two men, big hits and a few tries but I have to say these two centres were quite over rated and did very little to help their team get over the line.

I thought the Villa 13 was dangerous. Broke the line a few times and put on some cracking hits. He was contained fairly well though.

I saw a few good hits but with all the talk around him you would expect a better performance, both centres overall were fairly disappointing

To be fair you don't win premierships in round 1 all teams still have a chance if the results go their way

After expecting to see Villanova comfortably win against Padua I must confess Villanova were outclassed by a courageous and well drilled Padua side. The scary thing about Padua is that, unlike previous years, they are not a one man show or an average team relying in one or two superstars. Each player knows his role and executes it to perfection. Villanova were beaten because Padua, through teamwork and unselfishness, shut down the big names of Villanova. This causes headaches for the opposing team as there is no real weakness to focus on when playing Padua.

Regarding the game itself, Villanova simply couldn't handle the pressure of Padua's courageous ball running and defence. Only in the last 5 minutes, when Padua cleared its bench were villa able to cross the line for a couple of late tries, putting some respectability in the score line. The big number 13 for villa Cameron torpy did look dangerous when he got the ball but simply didn't get enough of it.

By no means have Padua won the premiership yet and are by no means the favourite but I definitely think they could finish top four. It is unlikely they could recreate their performance on the weekend week in and week out.

Stand outs for the game were pretty much the entire Padua team however in the backs the number 9, 15 and 13 played well, and pretty much every forward was outstanding for Padua particularly grade 10er Tom otoole who crossed for a double. For villa, tropy looked dangerous but didn't get much ball and felu and the number 9 had extremely bad days, felu missing a conversion from directly in front and the 9 for villa throwing multiple passes at the feet of the receiver.

Congrats to Padua for a once in a lifetime performance and don't expect to see Villanova make these un characteristic mistakes for a full game again this year, I expect them to not lose a game for the rest of the year after this wake up call.

Ashgrove losing to SPC isn't much of a big surprise. Ashgrove gifted Barker a heap of ball in their last trial. The midfield for Ashgrove seemed to be their problem leaking line break after line break. #13 was at sea. Forwards were pretty solid.
I'd be interested to know how the SPC centre went. No idea what his name is but he is a big unit.

You are pretty much saying that Padua's win was a fluke.
I don't think that was the case at all, the forwards took the ball for Padua up the field and were far too strong and ended up scoring. The backs did well when running their plays and Villa defended poorly and payed the price, they were really never in the game and that was due to Padua out playing them in every aspect.
"Once in a lifetime performance" if you look back to last year in the 16A's Padua beat Villanova then too I know 16A's isn't the same as 1st but they still one then and they still won on Saturday in front of a good Padua crowd.
Take the loss on the chin and move on.

Based on the talk of Iona on this thread, was not sure if Iona played badly or if SPLC was just off the radar. Iona scored their two tries in the first half, the first was short blindside run, 10 or so metres from the line. St. Peter's defence looked very soft in the first 20 or so minutes as both the tries they conceded were example of pretty bad defence. Things clicked into gear as the game went on, SPLC forwards held their own against a much more fancied Iona pack, and the backs as has been the case for the last few years, did the rest. Some good footwork, speed and a huge fend by the SPLC 11 on the IONA 14's face saw them score their first try. Second try was another run down the same wing to score on the sideline. SPLC kicker was very good, slotting all attempts, most of which were from the sideline.

Second half was all Iona, they were solid in the ruck and spent the majority of time in SPLC's 22. Couldn't crack the line though which was surprising given Peters poor goal line defence in the first half. I assume their coach would have given them a rocket at the break and it paid dividends as they did not concede any points.

Few notes from the game:
Iona's 7 was their best player, excellent footwork which saw him almost always break the first contact and get past the advantage line. Iona's backs looked fairly ordinary, they did the same wrap around move several times and even when they had space, Peters seemed to comfortably account for them.
Peters showed reluctance in kicking for the line coming out of their own end which probably put them under more pressure then necessary sometimes. They have speed to burn out wide and speaking to one of their boarding masters, almost half their team is in grade 11, so they should be a lot better next year. And yes, the 12 and I think also the 15 are broncos scholarship holders

Agreed. This quote from Iona waiting on their try line for an SPLC conversion kick, minus a few expletives :"c'mon boys, win this one and we've got the Premiership!".

As for having some indigenous and PNG scholarship boys, good on SPLC. Just take a look at the SPLC junior teams. They are there also, GRADE 7, U13s etc and they contribute very well to many aspects at the school including a culture where racism has no part.

On an earlier post, re SPLC 16A's previously flogged by 100 points. They were and plenty other heavy defeats but worth noting that this particular year at SPLC has suffered since start of Grade 8 from being low on boys numbers and have run out for both B then A games every week against colleges with A, B, C, D teams and beyond. This year is the first time they haven't had to do that and narrowly lost by 7 points while finishing strongly. I believe that team will dig in hard for each other.

I'm unsure to what you were watching but Villanovas centres were their best players without a doubt more so the 13 then 12 but both were their best. With saying this on times they were contained well, but that was due to the poor service from the 9 and 10. Padua 8 performed well making plenty of ground. Well done to both sides. Strong sides of Padua taking out the comp!!
