Interesting colts comp this year, and we haven't reached the half way point yet. Norths touch up Uni last week, but were down 40 - 10 at Oranges yesterday against Manly in a high scoring game.
Manly who should have won the GF last year were 2 wins from 5 games (all close) the last 2 games were by good margins.
Speaking to one of the parents a week or so ago for a 2nd / 3rd player - and her boy is loving the commradary and competition for positions down there.

Uni v Gordon yesterday.
First off in 3rd Grade Uni played Easts. Easts stepped up and had an earned win. Sorry to see final try scorer for Easts neck braced and stretchered, then Ambo. Trust all is well.
2nd Grade. Gordon turned up to play and scored early, but steamrolled thereafter. Gordon kept at it, kept their heads up but Uni had too much grunt in the forwards and speed across the park.
1st Grade. Gordon scored first, and kept scoring. Ahead at Oranges and looking good for a win. The excitement in the camp MIGHT excuse the ill discipline of the Gordon Coaching team. Very vocal challenging of the Ref's decisions, and offering him F Bombs after the game. (I was there with my daughter. We moved away out of embarrassment and admired the Refs composure) Uni went on to win with a slew of tries, and it would take a long stretch to suggest Gordon lost because of the Ref. Anyhow... the Gordon boys stayed at it and should take away a fair bit of encouragement.
As for Uni - their own worst enemy. absolutely predictable in their attack - going wide before going forward, running out of their twenty, tacklers being isolated and turning over ball or penalties, quick taps leading to pressure on attackers through poor passing, lateral movement. Too little confidence that scrum and line-out with patient and structured forward movement would provide space and time for their backs to do their stuff.
And the defense!! Oh well, at least the scoreboard attendant was busy.
All of this IMHO of course.
For some reason Uni have penrith again next week. Penrith were the first game of the season.

It is good to see that clubs in the Colts 3's with the bye are arranging to play the other club with the bye instead of having 30 kids miss out on footy for the weekend.

agree entirely. and this particular game was a beauty. Easts being rightly pumped at their victory.
In fact, generally, 3rd Grade Colts are really good to watch. Maybe not as fast in execution as the higher grades, but really high standard of the basics that make for fun and entertainment.

Beasties 3rds broke the Students stranglehold on the Colts Grand Finals Last year. Students won 1's and 2's. Beasties won the 3rds.

Norths v manly
3's and 2's both went to norths. Both were scrappy first halves, and in both, norths clicked and ran away with the games. Norths must have had a 4 to 1 penalty count in each game, with their 2's seeing two in the bin at different times, something they need to address.
Manly 1's were just far to clinical and slick for the norths boys, and just out muscled and outplayed their opponents.
Manly has a cast of thousands, so im sure they will be different each week giving guys a run.
But norths have been the benckmark (which i am led to believe was not the case last year) in 2's and thereabouts in 3's, but it seems they are having some problems in 1's.
It will be interesting to see how many of the 2's move into 1's and how that effects their run.

So who did the Kings School actually play midweek for a 17 - 12 win now that Uni Colts 2's and 3's are all present and accounted for? ( Although these young men are all full of energy and "get up and go" so 2 games in a week probably isn't an issue! ). Cheers, Wreckless

There is absolutely no excuse for this to happen, but I was nearby and only heard the challenges.
If you looked at this game 'fairly' you will remember that Gordon were ahead, and looking the goods when the referee completely ignored the linesman who had signalled for foul play with two Uni players scuffling with one Gordon player in the backplay- and allowed a try which put Uni ahead.
In normal circumstances the try would have been disallowed, and play bought back for a penalty to Gordon, but the ref decided to ignore the foul play as he had already ruled a try. This certainly caused some upset feelings. And the number of forward passes allowed to go were another reason to get upset.
On the sideline (taking pics) all I could hear was the Uni coaching team telling the Physio runner to tell his captain to keep in the ref's ear, and this happened consistently during the game.
The ref should have been telling him to go away and let him do the reffing as he didn't need any help. I think the ref seemed to lose the plot when the game didn't go according to plan - "how the hell could Gordon be leading".

As far as defence, it is a shame that you have decided that it must have been Uni playing poorly rather than Gordon playing well. Credit where credit is due.

And, and now I'm starting to sound upset myself, how the heck could the Uni linesman in second grade put up his flag for a conversion when the ball bounced under the posts. This same linesman was then asked by the ref whether a Uni player had gone into touch before a try - of course he said "no".
You could even hear some Uni spectators taking a gasp.
Uni definitely deserved their wins, but surely spectators getting upset at some of the decisions is completely understandable. The F bomb, certainly not.

Why didn't you come over and say hello???? :)

My understanding is that they had an 80% opposed training run. I really can't see Kings putting their front row up against Oscar Pyor-Lees in a full game just before the season. Good idea to have an opposed run though.

Hi Butts,
I didn't have my computer with me over the weekend so didn't see your info on how to find you. I did ask a number of people if you were there. I didn't approach Jnr Butts because he was on the reserves bench. (Nice dressing gowns!!)
You are right about the reasons for dismay. Absolutely. and I have no argument with a feisty supporter group. My point is behavior of coaching staff. I note there was a Ref's assessor at the game - they are doing their job.
At every game I game I have seen at Colts there is a problem with linesman in the lower grades and no ball boys/girls/men anyone in all grades.
Players in the Ref's ear. I am sick of it at all levels and the team I coach have been told to just shut up. Last week I took a player off for doing just that. Ask his unhappy parents;)
I note for all to read that the Gordon players were a credit to themselves in all play and conduct!
I meant no disrespect to Gordon defense either. But generally observe that Uni 1sts have been leaking points badly over the last two weeks.
Did you get a photo of the player going into touch? IIRC there was a good episode of the The Brady Bunch where Greg got over his disappointment in not making the School Footy team by taking just such a defining photo - but maybe I will save that for the Brady Bunch thread.:)
See you mate.

What about when Marcia's new boyfriend ( from another school ) pinched the playbook from Greg's team - that was a beauty! Looking for the BB thread now! :) Wreckless

At some grounds there seems to be only 1 football I'm sure a couple of local kids could ball boy for a drink and pie/hamburger.
I also agree with the lineman issues.

Didn't get that damned photo Coulda, I was on the other side of the field. Also didn't see the coaching staff episode, so can't really comment. Good to see that passion is coming back to the Gordon Colts - just needs toning down a bit :p

So which one of your many "spies" pointed out Junior Butts, he is supposed to be anonymous  Unfortunately his work environment is really getting him down and so he isn't really enjoying his "Sydney life" at the moment. If he can get a job in which he is happy I reckon he'll bounce back to his 2013 form.

Have a drink together next time Uni vs Gordon at Chatswood Oval.

I had my 10-year-old grandson with me, and he had a ball chasing the footies that ended up in the trees up against the fence.
Not really fast enough to get the ball back into play quickly though :p

I know all the kids who played for that touring side last year - including my own Jr Coulda. No spies required. That boy of yours is a class act. Hope he finds the right job soonest.
I will find you at Chatswood.

OK, now I'm starting to think. I knew all the kids as well, but just can't think of a Mr Coulda.

I know my young bloke is really upset that he can't get back to how he was playing last year, but maybe it will all come together.

I'll have a glass of Magners waiting for you ;)
