I feel sorry for staunch GPS supporters like BD, Jper, RR and co, but on the other hand I can't help but feeling quite pleased for Souths and more importantly, the competition (If Kerevi and co do leave Yoku Rd)

This would leave; University, Sunnybank, GPS, Brothers, Souths, Easts and Bond (few years time) all pushing for a finals spot. I think this is a really positive sign for Qld Rugby.

Now, with that being said, I think those 4 new Reds recruits should go to Bond, Wests and Norths coming to think of it. Yes, I would love to see JOC (James O'Connor) back at his junior club, but I think Norths or Wests need him more.

Plenty of speculation above, but you never know what might eventuate.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, O'Connor would fit right in at Brothers.

To be fair I did get away from my main point in my original post and did not mean to steer it so far towards players leaving with Buzz or anything like that.

I do believe though that if someone is a professional player manager they should not be allowed to have a role in a Premier rugby setup, no matter how many players from the club are on their books. It creates too much bias and other issues. No matter how subjective they want to do be, when it comes down to it they are there to push their own players agendas forward and this can create unnecessary conflict.

Good luck to Picone at Souths and Fogs at Norths.

Big dog hear where your coming from, is it more of a conflict when board members have try to influence selection due to family? Not sure thus is true but strong rumours this was the case this year?

Im sure I know what you are referring to and I guess it is a similar situation, hard to be subjective when other factors involved but we can only hope the club is being put first

I truly do not believe board members influenced selections much if at all, especially any that were not warranted. From an objective point of view Premrug there was no player(s) within question that did not deserve a spot, nor was there other players knocking on the door to dethrone them in their respective positions.

Board members should have zero influence full stop. "Much if at all" is still not acceptable. If individuals wish to coach, get a clipboard & earn your stripes, otherwise let the appointed coach do his role.

Sorry I should have phrased that differently, as far as I am aware board members have had no influence, however even with rumours of board influence IMO the players in question warranted selection and I believe it is disrespectful to suggest these players did not earn their jersey.

I'm feeling a bit confused here......

Isn't Brett Picone just an employee of the player management business carried on by his brother Anthony?

Wow Yoku Rd must be a great breeding ground for politicians - won't be surprised to see Clive Palmer as the GPS coach next year!!!

Although it is in the premier's electorate.

Filth are you enjoying this GPS chat as much as me?

Nope. Fully Accredited agent himself.

Interestingly I spoke to a former player agent who said this was actually an issue, but I can't find anything about it. So I'm assuming it's kosher.

It would appear that the coaching situation at Norths is sorted for next year. I wonder where that leaves GPS.

2015 will make for a very interesting year. I assume there will be multiple players moving clubs.
What GPS players will follow Fogarty to Norths?
What GPS players will follow Picone and co to Souths?
What players will Dammers bring to GPS with him?

Will be a very busy off season I suspect.

I think we're overstating Picone's influence over players - he has players pretty much everywhere and I know that he recommends they go wherever is the best environment for them to excel and get noticed. If I were in GPS's position though, I'd be more concerned about Tuqiri leaving the club.

Tuqiri is a coach of Brisbane Fiji's 7s team, involved with the Brisbane Fiji XV in the Kings and Queens of the Pacific tournament, and a highly respected member of the Fijian (and more broadly the Pacific Islander) community - he has some draw.

Add to this the fact that most of the Brisbane Fiji players (especially 7s players) were Souths juniors and I'd say the Souths case might be strong enough to overcome the 'great culture' of GPS.

Have to agree. They are a University that offers sporting scholarships. Most of them do. If they were all for rugby it would be different but they aren't. So the rugby players who apply for them have to compete against World Champions and Olympians.

Exactly, most years you see 2-5 rugby players (with 5 being very high and rare) getting a scholarship. The difference between a UQ scholarship and what the other clubs is that it is a scholarship. They guys who get them usually aren't the best rugby players around (often you see guys whose top schoolboy honours were QLD 2 and lower).

Every club offers similar incentives to play. But the other clubs can offer to anyone irrespective of academic achievement. And in many cases it apathy from the club itself that lose players.

Tevita Kurindrani was signed, sealed and delivered to Souths as a colt (as was Jr Roselea) but despite the club promising him help getting job/apprenticeship when it time to pony up nothing happened. That would have involved the committee doing something, which never happened back then. Makes it real easy for a kid to walk away a join a place that offers you anything (which in Tevita's case would have been the academy).

I have just heard that Todd Dammers is coaching GPS next season. This is an extraordinary coup for the Club.

Dammers worked with Todd Louden at Sydney Uni in 2011 and 2012. They were also together at Ricoh in Japan.

He will bring a very professional approach to GPS and will influence all of their grades. In particular he will instil a training ethic vastly more demanding than what I understand is the norm in Brisbane club rugby. Those players who embrace it will thrive.

Todd is hard-nosed but also very supportive of his players. In addition working in tandem with the most astute coach in Australian rugby in Louden has really enabled him to hone his analytical and strategic skills.

I now have a reason to take a close interest in Brisbane club rugby.

Bruce, do you know anything about Sam Talakai being signed with the Reds?

I wouldn't be surprised if James O'Connor plays from Jeeps. I'm pretty sure he played under Dammers at Nudgee. This would create a formidable backline of;

9. Grasso 10. Tuttle 11. Kuridrani 12. Johnson 13. Kerevi 14/15 O'Connor

I imagine he will be a crowd favourite wearing the green and blue out at Bottomley Park type grounds, where the supporters are right on top of you. Though I do recall T12 mentioning he would prefer him donning the butchers strips from a heckle point of view.

Just quickly regarding the UQ scholarships, plenty of players play for other clubs apart from University Rugby Club. It's only out of convenience that many play for Uni, considering the club is just down the hill/road from the actual University.
