I don't get the shot about Hooper.
If I was a 30 something manager, and I was looking for emotional support,I wouldn't be going to a 22 yo kid for it.
I would have thought someone like Horwill, with whom she had worked with for a few years, who was more mature would have been the logical thought process.
It's like a teacher asking the kindy class captain for relationship advise.

Not really. Hooper clearly had a relationship with Beale. He was the captain of his Super Rugby team and the test captain after all.

Once again this comes back to the fact that Hooper really wasn't ready for this role, and the lack of support around him (and the environment which he was in) didn't assist that in any way.

Which part of the Wallaby captain's role is to act as either a counselling manager for ARU staff members or as an off field disciplinarian towards teammates?

I completely accept that an older player with more life experience in the same situation might have offered more and better support to another person when they went to them for help but let's not pretend this has anything to do with being Wallaby captain.

I think it was clearly an attempt, to not require emotional support (she wouldn't ask a 22yo ffs), but an effort to include him in the problem, as he's the fucking captain at both the Tahs and the Wallabies, and is clearly someone Beale should respect.

Hooper should simply have said, 'Thank you for bringing this to my attention DI, i'll speak to Kurtley and if necessary, i'll call Patricio Noriega and get him to ensure Kurtley understands", and then spoken to Beale saying it was a disgusting act, he's got a big rapsheet and that in any team captained by Hooper, he would not allow such actions to destabilise any individual or the team. Make it very clear that it was unacceptable and that any further indiscretions would result in Hooper himself asking Link to drop him from the squad.

The captain should be a leader, on and off the field.

If the captain isn't able to keep the troops in line, why would they listen to another squad member instead?

It's not a deliberate dig at Hooper, more that this is the environment that he has basically been developed in.

Patston says she approached Wallabies captain Michael Hooper to tell him about the incident and tells him she is not coping well. She says he replied: “You’ll be right. You’ll deal with it.

The claims made by Patston in the Wayne Smith article are certainly explosive but the impact would surely have been far greater if they'd come out in the middle of the hearing than after it had been wound up.

Can you please clarify what you mean by this? I interpret this as you saying why not release this stuff prior to the hearing as it would have helped get the result Patston was after.

So it appears she cannot win. Release it before hand and I can say with almost 100% she would have been criticised for trying to sway the hearing. She held onto the information and tried to let justice take its course. If Beale was sacked it may all have ended, now we have the situation where it is likely more players are going to be questioned and more issues raised. Not saying this is exactly what happened of course, just another view of what may have been going on in people's minds.

And before people claim that Beale cannot win. The guy sent an offensive text, twice, has lied about it in the media and should have been sacked for past transgressions.

I think the problem is that Link has wiped his hands of this sort of discipline and left it to anyone else. If Link was sitting next to Di on the plane why wasn't he giving the final word on the matter instead of letting it fester into a slanging match mid air. Surely he was the final authority with the team and any dissent would not be tolerated.

That's not what the article said at all......

She had hoped Wallabies captain Michael Hooper might lend her support, approaching him in Melbourne shortly after the June 9 text landed.

“He was one of the first people I told,” Patston revealed. “I said to him ‘This has happened … I’m really struggling in dealing with it and it’s affecting me’ and he just brushed it off and said ‘You’ll be right. You’ll deal with it.’ He actually didn’t want to know.”

just like KB (Kurtley Beale) listened to everyone on the bus? He is a grown man, the coach isn't a babysitter. This is like saying the referee is the ultimate authority so if players have a punch up on ground it is his fault. You ever tried stopping people in the heat of an argument?

No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm not casting judgement on Patston for making the comments now. I understand why she'd do that.

All I'm saying is that the outcome of Friday's code of conduct hearing may well have been different if Patston and McKenzie had given evidence in person and been in a position to respond to Beale's claims. As it was, Patston and McKenzie provided a statement in advance and then Beale's legal team provided both a statement (a very long statement) and testimony on the night. Beale would have had the opportunity to respond to both Patston and McKenzie's statements.

As it stands now, the code of conduct hearing into the abusive messages has concluded and now it seems that more evidence has come to light.

It seems that there will be some sort of review into the argument on the plane and the ARU seemingly has testimony of several people involved. It also seems that this won't involve another code of conduct hearing. The plane incident will surely revolve around what happened on the plane and have absolutely nothing to do with the abusive Whatsapp messages though.

I'd be upset to see Pulver go, yes he hasn't handled this complete clusterfuck well, but he's done some great things for the game so far; namely the NRC.

The ARU's reaction to the latest claims in the Wayne Smith article in The Australian will be interesting.

My guess is that it's going to be hard for them to do much about it. Unless someone from within the team spills their guts to provide evidence for the ARU to follow up it would seem very hard to make anything happen.

It would seem to me that the only way things could be effectively uncovered would have been all the people involved to have appeared at Beale's hearing and given evidence in person which could then be followed up with cross examination.

The claims made by Patston in the Wayne Smith article are certainly explosive but the impact would surely have been far greater if they'd come out in the middle of the hearing than after it had been wound up.

I think that Beale and his lawyers waited until the plane to the EOYT had left to protect those other people involved. Conjecture on my part, but Hanson's name coming up suggests that maybe it just wasn't Tahs, either.
