NRC onwards and upwards

Shame really - I would like that to be a regular post-season fixture, alternating home and away, and playing in some smaller areas.
There really should be a trans-tasman cup every year.

I'm really torn here though. What you've touched on here is the real benefit of moving the NRC to a H&A season as discussed prior. With 8 home games for each team, there's ample opportunity for Double-Headers and Curtain Raisers as well as for more matches to be played in Newcastle, Sunshine Coast, Tamworth, Gosford, Toowoomba, etc.

However, the ARU's long-term thinking for the NRC probably involves a Samoan & Tongan team too (if Fiji works) which would create an 11 team, 10 week competition (plus 2 weeks finals). Perhaps if looking for a longer season we could take a leaf out of the Big Bash book and create 1 or 2 "Derby Rounds"

Longer term, the Force & Rebels could each field a second team under their umbrella organization: providing the coaches, administration and players for an Adelaide and Tasmanian team respectively.

Then we can pile dross on every other sport in Australia for having the only true National sporting competition

You do realise, gentlemen, your expanded NRC will put the final nails in the coffin of club rugby in Brisbane and Sydney as Australia's third tier. I presume you've run your thoughts past Papworth and Poidevin for their comments.

Like the idea as longer term 10 year vision. I think Next five years yes will be about adding Samoan and tonga team and expanding number of rounds that way. Got to build crowds and viewers for Foxtel to fund more expansion for new tv deal from 2020

I'm not sure if we'll see a Samoan or Tongan side enter the NRC. As much as I'd like to see it. Part of that reason is relative to Fiji they lack the necessary infrastructure. What we may see is funding on behalf of WR (World Rugby) toward the NRC to contract players from Samoa and Tonga.

In terms of the Rebels and Force running a 2nd side each. No. What could be an option down the road is both looking to combine to use an Adelaide based squad as a combined academy structure.

Wouldn't mind that amirite. Some time away you'd have to imagine though, given they'd have to fly more than the Rebels top ups/coaches, whether that's from Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne, or even overseas.

I honestly think this would be the model:
  1. Buy a large house or two in a decent area.
  2. Use it to house 10 or so Rebels and perhaps Force players (realistically, the younger ones without families) and a couple of Shute Shield and Hospital Cup players the Rebels are looking at.
  3. The rest of the team would be SA locals, perhaps blokes attracted from elsewhere or back home for an opportunity.
For the rest of the year you AirBnB the house. This would actually be reasonable close to cost neutral, other than managing the house.

The major reason for their inclusion is that they are the only Pacific Union to sort their governance and financial issues to a professional standard. From what I've heard as well they are the only Pacific Union to have made any progress in meeting the criteria set by World Rugby last year for them to take their seat on the WR (World Rugby) Council.

The Fijian government got really involved with sorting out any corruption and nepotism that has been prevalent in the Pacific Unions for years and the other two unions seem to just stick their heads in the sand, whilst chanting "Woe is me, NZ is taking all our players." One only has to look at the All Blacks test that Samoa hosted to see where all the money went.

So for World Rugby to put up money to fund a team, it shows they know it won't be wasted and will be put through the correct channels of governance.

NRL to steal some thunder soon by announcing a Fiji team will be joining the NSW Cup comp

Which is weird because it'd be easier for them to play in the Qld comp, but I guess they've already got the PNG team.

I was thinking along the lines of the following, but it was tongue in cheek
Tier 1 - internationals
Tier 2 - State of Origin
Tier 3 - NRL
Tier 4 - NSW cup

On that,
To date all super teams have drawn from the NSW and QLD pathway to varying levels.
Has the gradual slide down the Soup ladder related to our lack of focus on a pathway that includes growth.
What is the proposed pathway under this longer NRC season?
Is there a colts set up, and pathway that enures growth and direction out of schools.

Whilst i see the NRC being important, pathway, and number of kids playing is more. If it is not done correctly we will bring the NRC down, rather than have numbers and quality pushing it up.

Tier 1 - State of Origin
Tier 2 - NRL
Tier 3 - Internationals
Tier 4 - NSW cup
Tier 5 - Super split into 8s Challenge Cup with a French team, a Welsh team and a London team to make it seem like people care outside of Yorkshire and Lancashire League or the Golden Oldies Retirement Variety Bash.

You both made a mistake so I fixed it for you...

I do give league credit for creating more international product though - reason union can't rest on its laurels as superior international appeal than league and continue to innovate at all levels

ARU survery for the NRC is up.

I am having a chat with the ARU next week about potential improvements next week so again feed in anything here.

I probably need to go back through this thread and distill a few things.

If you can get them to stop ripping the Rams off, that would be great
