Anybody know if they've announced the Aus 7s team for Commonwealth youth games, or know when they will announce?

Apparently the 2017 Australian u18's sevens team selections had been confirmed last Friday. The players were notified earlier this week but I can not find anything about the team selection on any website or forum at this present time. The Aus team will represent at the 2017 Youth Commonwealth Games in July.

Be interesting to see which player(s) has the potential to be promoted to senior team with opportunity to play at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. If Dylan Pietsch can do it this year cannot see why a youngster from the 2017 team cannot do it next year.

Congrats to the boys. Especially Tristen I take it.
Any team lists out?

Yes I couldn't find anything either. Very frustrating. You would think that the selection of the Australian Youth Sevens team to go to the Youth Commonwealth Games would warrant a press release.

G and G contributors appear to be the most accurate source of timely information on all things Rugby. Rugby media units need to lift their game. It shouldnt be that hard to source info from ARU, NSWRU, NSW Schools or Sevens. Even Facebook pages are woefully out of date.

Read an article this week regarding the Youth Commonwealth Games. It did not list Australia in the boys Sevens comp, only the girls. If the article is correct, it might explain why there's been no announcement.

Bahamas, England, Fiji, Kenya, Samoa and Sri Lanka will all be going for gold in the men’s rugby sevens tournament, while Australia, Canada, Papua New Guinea, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago and Wales will battle it out in the women’s competition.

Thanks CNorth. If the report is correct it seems a bit tough on the boys. No doubt a few will be disappointed. Never even heard of Beach Soccer as an official sport

Notice there is no New Zealand of either gender. Wonder what happened there?

Maybe they're investing in that tournament at the end of the year (Junior 7s World Champs I think it was called) and don't see it as sensible for guys to play both. That tourney had Aus, NZ, Samoa, and I think Fiji.

From what I understand, it wasn't a decision made by ARU, it was simply because Australia wasn't selected/invited to participate in the boys Sevens.

Congrats great achievement. Can anyone shed any light on the thinking around picking a squad 12 months in advance. Also would this conflict with the schoolboys 15s tour???

Firstly, they have not selected the 'Australian squad'. They have selected a 'train-on' squad of 37 which will be significantly reduced come November for the players to participate at Worlds in December 2017.. The reduction of the team will be based on a broad criteria to ultimately select the best 12 available players which I assume will be based on a players attitude to the program, desire, dedication, what the player brings to the team, form and lastly injuries.

The 37 selected are the best of the cohort who have participated in the u17's Nationals and had already undergone the same process in their respective state selections. You saying 12 months out , how else do they do it ? This team was selected for the Youth Commonwealth Games which is some 4 months away. For the some reason Australia is not sending a Boys team which ridiculous!!

In relation to conflict with the Aus schoolboys 15's tour, well it can only conflict if you are a good enough player to be selected in both teams. Then that would ultimately be up to that talented player to make a decision on whether they wish to play 7's or 15's format as they cannot play both, providing 15's tour of the UK progresses forward....

So they didn't know the boys were included in youth games ? If so bit of a worry.
Otherwise do you pick any national team / squad 12 months out.

Great acheivement for all involved
Train hard and enjoy.

The team probably only gets 3 training windows (the school holidays).

Even then, will they train in the 3rd term holidays? Unlikely, because of exams. Will they train in the term 2 holidays? Maybe, but most of these lads will be playing schoolboys.

Face it, this makes a lot of sense.

I don't understand mate, you're quoting something from March.

Yeah sorry, I'll try to explain it a bit clearer.

Harry Turner who played in Combined States at Schoolboy Nationals and Scott's 7's Tournament in March received a call from Hugh Carpenter last week informing him he had been selected into the Aus Youth 7's squad who will be going into camp this September at Narrabeen ( Harry had previously been selected into the NSW youth 7's to play at nationals last year in Perth but had to step down due to an injury 2 days before the final NSW youth 7's squad was announced hence not being named, but was told he would still be considered for the Aus youth 7's squad. Hugh had seen him play in the Scott's 7's tournament (Waratah development squad) and at Schoolboy Nationals - Combined States resulting in Harry being given a place within the Aus youth (extended) squad
