No doubt the boys will be. Coaches may use it as a trial because it is and try different combos during games. After all there not measured in trial performance

I hope they approach it like the real deal but I doubt it.

I suspect that the people who do the measuring will be watching closely. I also suspect that CAS coaches will be keen to claim a gps scalp and GPS coaches don't want to be fronting up Monday explaining to Heads and colleagues why your team lost to a CAS team, trial or no.

I'm referring to those who measure or otherwise in your post #921. It would seem unlikely that the gps and cas schools turned their respective comps upside down solely in order to play an additional 5 trials that no one cares about. More likely it's a test to see if a combined comp of some sort will work. If so, those who measure are likely to be watching. No doubt selectors will be also as they will have to select on trial form. All in all, more at stake all round than the usual pre season trials.

if it was to see if a combined comp would work, why arent they playing these sort of games at the backend of the season.

This issue has been debated long and hard. There was no clear strategy outlined for this change by whomever is in charge.

Some see it as a precursor to an expanded combined competition involving more schools in Sydney. If it can involve public schools as well and encourage greater participation then that's an argument for.

Some say this will only work if this proposed new school competition is in the form of a Divisional Competition with relegation and promotion. This would possibly assist smaller schools that have struggled in recent years.

Will CAS schools that dont offer scholarships and dont recruit be able to compete with GPS schools on a long term basis?

Some say it's a crock because they are only trials with the ''real'' competition starts in the second round to contest the Henry Plume Shield.

Others are fence sitters.

I think the players will be forced to take it seriously if they want to impress Rep selectors.
I'm not sure if every coach will be 100% committed to trial matches. Natural competitiveness and school pride will kick in; I dont think any coaches will want to lose. Also, bragging rights will be up for grabs.

However, if a school competed well but didnt win every game, I dont think it would break too many hearts. It would be put into perspective.

Coaches however will definitely want to win the Henry Plume Shield.

CN and Sideline,

Geeeze my view has been clear for a long time and been rubbished by many, like donuts and little chicken (sorry duck eggs) in that the CAS schools now playing games vs the GPS schools will get destroyed.

The bigger picture does need to be explained and you would have to think this change is for that reason, otherwise all of won't understand why it happened in the first place BUT if what we all think us right, it will lead to a much stronger competition for everyone, going forward, and for me that is real progress for NSW school rugby, and I include the public schools in my picture.

CN, mentions the recruiting aspect which is true but some schools can still perform well without buying a premiership, trust this comment is clear and makes it clear that everyone knows when you buy it, or as other well known people say, it's " a fake win or fake news".

Can the CAS schools compete long term, who knows, but no school ever wins every year. The point is senior school rugby has an opportunity to show the silly ARU how to evolve, let's do it,for all of us!

Really???

That's my take on it. I can't talk for a school like Knox but Waverley dont recruit.

They enjoyed a strong year last season and have another very good team this season and should be competitive with the GPS schools, but it looks like they will struggle for the next couple of years after that.

It's a cyclic thing and realistically I'm not convinced they can compete with GPS schools that offer ''scholarships'' year in year out.

If it moved into a tiered comp.

Those schools would need to engage in the same scholarship attempts GPS schools engage in to compete.

Not necessarily .... in theory at least, the standard of competition would be more even in a Divisional competition.

Scholarships and recruiting may not be a relevant issue but I think it will be.
At least the question should be asked when comparing apples with apples.

I can't speak for the past or future, but the Knox First XV this year will be comprised solely of boys who have been at the school for a number of years.

Out of curiosity how many out of the starting 15 u mention have been there since year 7?
