Most players think the club appears by magic every year so they can have fun with their mates. And they don't understand when I get the shits about it.

I tried to change the culture. And the Committee applauded that move and agreed to it.

Then, when the numbers disappeared, and Subbies were more worried about the inconvenience to other 7 clubs in my Division than the survival of mine, some of my senior playing group (including a committee member) decided we should soften our stance.

So I asked "and what happens when our plan for them to pay $20/week means they only attend home games anyway?"

"Uh-"

"And then, when some of these guys turn up 15 minutes before kickoff without $20 and say they'll pay later, and we planned for them to fill out our numbers, what do we do?"

"Uh WE JUST NEED NUMBERS OK?!!"

What do you do?

Gotta focus on the factors you can control, like why are players leaving and why are new players not joining?

Club culture is everything. If the club has a good brand then it will attract people to it and those people will want to volunteer time, money and energy towards the club. Everyone becomes a selfish individual when the brand is tarnished and there is a negative atmosphere around a club.

Perhaps there are ideas that can be taken from the most successful clubs.

1) I asked them to pay rego
2) A bunch of pricks who didn't pay rego picked a fight and ended our season.
3) Those pricks belonged to a coach who treated some of our regular players like shit.
4) The club started thinking about trophies and not keeping players happy (though "happy" often means "not paying rego")

why are new players not joining?

See point 1) above.

I agree 100%. Some of those ideas I might even be able to implement IF they don't rely on:

1) Decent facilities (this is not in our future unless we find a multi-millionaire benefactor who can buy off enough council land to build a ground for us).

2) Players understanding they need to pay their rego not only for the club's ongoing viability (and after-match functions), but its stated goals of fundraising for charity.

Other stuff I'm trying, starting tomorrow where Harlequins have generously offered to come back to our pub, despite the big trip they have to make.

A few phone calls were made during the week and some guys are thinking about coming back. Maybe they'll even come down and play today.

They probably won't pay, but at this point I'm past giving a fuck. I don't think the club culture can be reformed. There isn't enough commitment to the club, and I'm certainly out of motivation to invest more time and effort into a lost cause.

The club is probably going to Oatley next week for 2 forfeits and 40-50 minutes in First Grade where my main aim is avoiding yet more injuries. Once I show some of the guys the road trip required, a lot will figure out that a Saturday working for money is a better investment.

My all up selections for the weekend.

2nd Div
HUNTERS vs Hills
HAC vs Lindfield
BEECROFT vs Forest - match of the round and expect plenty of niggle.
MOUNTAINS vs UNSW

So I decided to go and watch your Div 2 match of the round today - Beecroft vs Forest. You were right about niggle. What an ugly game.

Forest seemed to be in control through their forwards and were pushing Beecroft off their own ball in scrums, until their 8 was yellowed for head high about 15 minutes in, then a prop was red carded a few minutes later. After that Beecroft's set piece became more competitive, but the game got worse.

The ref lost control of the game and by the second half seemed to be guessing when it came to penalties and cards.

Multiple head highs from both sides, punches being thrown, again very ugly.

Forest managed to get the win despite playing with 14 men (13 for nearly 20 minutes).

Hopefully next week I can see a better game.

HAC 70 Lindfield 24 in a blowout after 7 all at half time. Lindfield won lower grades easily.
Edit Hunters Hill 29 Hills 17, Blue Mountains 38 UNSW 21, Beecroft 7 Forest 11.

Holy crap. Are HAC really good at home, Lindfield really bad, or both?

Lost Second Grade 40-0 in what was a reasonably good game from our guys - just didn't have the cohesion to finish off a few moves or the defence to stop much younger men from our mostly 3rd Grade guys.

Lost First Grade 90-0 having had a lot of guys back up. I'm still trying to figure out how many turned up today, but it wasn't a lot different to last week.

Our canteen did quite well tho. And Harlequins came back to the pub for a great feed and boat race even though they only had about an hour available.

Anyone have gross on what's happening at Brothers?
I'd heard Vinne is playing 4ths at Forest but mail is a lot of their islanders have gone to Gordon? Anyone confirm?

After two weeks it's hard to draw any form across both Div 2 and Div 3 clubs.

Gordon certainly stronger, towelling Uni in lower grades.

Apparently St.Ives were given an ultimatum by subbies to either Field a Colts team this weekend or be replaced by Oatley in a straight swap from Div 4 for round 3. Looks like subbies regretting forcing Oatley into DiV 4 and are looking for an out to move them back up.

Nooooo only reason I signed up this year was because div4 meant so much less travel than being in div 3.

Well, fuck. That's pretty interesting. Subbies don't usually change shit once the season is underway.

I heard from Epping that they're struggling to find a Halligan game for their 4s every week too, since the change, so it cuts both ways.

Mate I understand completely where you're coming from, but I can tell you that there will be no contest this Saturday if Rouse Hill show up at H V Evatt. We're fielding a stack of 3rd Graders in the higher grades, and multiple guys are backing up.

Not that we'll be much challenge for Snives either I suppose - that 90-nil loss against Quins was only about 60 minutes, and my secretary reckons 55.

A big thumbs up to Balmain yesterday. Ladies day was unexpected, and my wife thoroughly enjoyed it. Dragged my brother along too, so hopefully we put a few coins in the kitty.

I'll give Drummoyne a go next week.

10/10 to the muzzled wolves.

Yes apparently they slapped one together topping up their limited colt numbers with 16 and 17 year olds from their junior club to run out a team.

That's not cool going up against guys far more senior. At least they held it to under 50. Wish my Third Grade guys could have done that against Quins ;)

That is correct, coach went to Gordon and so did a lot of their players.
