obviously they're going to have Donaldson and Woodcock swapping 5/8 and fullback which as we have seen wasn't very effective

Both from Q1, the outside centre played ba s last year i think, the inside from all other teams must feel a bit hard by, i followed thw qld sides and all i can think is he must have done something extraordinary last year year as their comp hasnt begun this year, although i dont think he played last year at riverview, must be a reason
3 wingers out of 8 teams
What a crock
3 fullbacks, one who was never sighted but managed to get in front of tournament stars

Some have spoken about size, the kids just did play against size and that size could not handle them
Size is not an issue in the very highest level so why here, is your size a requirement to play in the selection tournament?

Nightstalker,
I know you are a very disappointed parent. I understand your frustration and vented emotions. . .BUT mate, dont attack the KIDS!! especially the #12 &13 you are attacking because they got ahead of your son!!!
The #13 Jordan Petaia was a standout player for the Barbarians against Tonga. The #12 Noa Lolesio is a new comer and can defend and kick(a key skill at #12. STOP attacking the kids .NOt their fault they are gifted and are blessed with rugby smarts. All the best to selected boys and its not the end of the road for you son!!

AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS BARBARIANS V TONGAN SCHOOLS: FIVE NAMES TO REMEMBER

By Rugby News | Sep 19 2016
The Australian Schools Barbarians held off a spirited Tongan Schools side to claim a 38-26 victory in front of a healthy crowd at Newington in Sydney on Saturday.
As expected, the Tongans looked to outmuscle the Australians early however the home side worked their way into the match and scored four well worked tries to lead 26-12 at the break.
Although it wasn’t the most polished performance, the Australians did enough in the second half to win the match against a physical Tongan side that showed plenty of heart and aggression.
Five names to remember:
Nick Brown – Kings, NSW
The hardworking lock was the best on ground on Saturday and showed plenty of class, particularly when the Tongans turned up the heat in defence. Brown was constantly involved and controlled the maul, which led to two Australian tries.
Jordan Petaia – Brisbane State HS, QLD
The electric winger was the most exciting player on the field and made the most of the few opportunities he received. Petaia beat his defender on a number of occasions and showed plenty of spark. Tall and lean, the flyer could be quite an exciting prospect if he adds some weight and maintains his speed.
Dylan Pietsch – Kings, NSW
Openside flanker Pietsch was the most aggressive of the Australians and worked hard all game. The No.7 only caused one turnover but made up for it with his work around the park. He showed Michael Hooper like speed to run 60 metres untouched and score an important try early in the second half.
Tyzac Jordan – Waverley, NSW
Despite only playing half the match at scrumhalf, Jordan was one of Australia’s best and showed great speed to score a nice individual try from a midfield scrum early in the match. Jordan controlled the tempo of the game well in the first half and remained composed when the Tongans lifted the intensity.
Luke Rixon – Shore, NSW
Like Petaia, Rixon made the most of every opportunity on the wing and showed tremendous pace. He also kicked a number of difficult conversions from out wide. Rixon certainly has the skill and pace and if he can add some size, he’ll be one to watch.

i followed thw qld sides and all i can think is he must have done something extraordinary last year year as their comp hasnt begun this year

They've played weeks of trials and they also have a far more extensive week of representative selection games. The fact of the matter is there's NO shortage of footage to select them from.

This narrative of "the queensland season starts later and it's bad for rep football" is tired and incorrect.

Selectors job is to pick the best team and 2nd best team of School boys U18 Rugby Union players.

It is possible for a boy to be selected and not even play in the Nationals.

The Nationals is just a tournament where selectors can get to see the best perform against each other.

How a team performs really dosent matter to the selectors. Otherwise no boys would be selected from VIC or WA. Fortunately, they look beyond the team performance for the individuals that stand out. And it was great to see a boy from WA selected.

A Team playing well and winning, often is because a few individuals. Their ability to win set piece, a brilliant 7 getting turnover ball, a good 10 reading the game and putting backs into holes. A fullback that tackles and stops any trys being scored. So take 10, 2 and 15 out of ACT are they still a side able to go through undefeated?

It looks like ACT have been hard done by, last year they said the opposite and they were over represented.

I would be interested to know what boys from ACT that people think are unlucky not to get a selection. Then you need to compare them against who did. Probably was a very close call in many cases.

Seems like 2 CAS boys from NSW are being discussed the most on this forum.
2 boys from WA were selected
1 in the Australian team
1 in the Barbarians team, this is massive for Rugby in WA. As a whole I thought the teams were selected for size, as there playing NZ and Fiji.
Congratulations to all boys selected, I feel for the boys that were not.

Size is a massive issue in the highest level. It's inevitable that at some point in your career that if you don't fit the physical requirements, you will effectively plateau, and generally that point is right about now. The reality is 175cm/75kg inside centres (for an example) are just not physically capable of competing at this level regardless of skill.

You're probably right. The selectors would be thinking that way when selecting players to step up to the next level, although I'd argue against that for a fullback, namely Pavlakis.

His speed and all round ability made up for his lack of size. And he can tackle. The way he performed spoke for itself.

He shouldn't hold his breath waiting to be called up but i dont think he'd let anyone down if he was selected.

SLV you're saying all the games are in Sydney (possibly one in the country)?

Not a great year to be chosen for Aus Schoolboys teams if you're NSW based....!

Last year the Aus team travelled to Apia, Samoa and NZ (!!) and in 2015 the tournament was in Sunnybank, Brisbane.

This year the Sydney-based players, of who, there are more than a few as has been pointed out ad nauseam, get to stay home and travel all the way to Riverview.....again

Quick question that may have been answered but I couldn't find with my forum search:

What happened to the Indigenous side in the ASRU comp - still going or not?

Riverview...again

Six years in a row for the Division I Competition isn't it?

Maybe somewhere else gets a go before 2020?

"Overseas tour was planned but cancelled because ARU pulled the funding"

This is a huge disappointment with the lacklustre efforts of the ASRU and the ARU.
This news has only been made public in recent months, when this traditional Northern hemisphere tour is ear-marked for every 4 years.
It highlights the incompetency of those planning and finalising itenaries for these major events.

FGS!! this is our national schoolboys rugby team from which we begin the serious pathway approach towards a potential role with the Wallabies.
Why has the ARU & ASRU waited this long??

And now, 'a make do' arrangement to put something together for these boys who have been asked to give so much to be ready to represent their country??

Is there really no $$ from other ASRU sponsors to let these boys have a decent schoolboys rugby experience??
Perhaps it is why its been played in Riverview(Sydney) and a reason for so many NSW boys getting picked :) (a controversial but its just a joke fullas).
. .
All the best to the boys selected to represent our national schools and country. Its the highest honour of any schoolboys rugby aspirations. Well done , youve earned it and congratulations.

Now its time the ASRU and the ARU must step up and give these lads the best opportunity to have a positive and enjoyable experience. Hopefully most will stay in our great game and not be enticed by league or AFL.

That's fair enough but it doesn't mean there is no alternative.

Other locations could do that.

King comes to mind. Expansive grounds and boarding facilities.
Others too as you say.

Last year I remember I was worried that the Year 12 boys would not be able to focus on their studies leading into their exams in October (for all Year 12 players from all states) as they traveled to Apia, and NZ.

So this year they will be fine.
One good thing to come out of this

I just copied and pasted from the ASR website.

Its a bit disappointing, especially as there was originally an overseas tour planned and canned, but i dont think the players who were selected are complaining too much. Or their families and schools.

It's still a huge honour to wear the Australian Schools or the Australian Barbarians jersey. And at least its easier for the families and supporters to see the games live. Thats something I guess.

And someone posted something before like: ''he's not up to Schools standard, maybe Baa baas''
There can be a very fine line between being selected for the Schools or Barbarians team or not being selected at all.

Congratulations to all players selected and all those who made their State teams and competed last week. It was a once in a lifetime experience and a great achievement.
