Currie Cup still top TV dog
There has been much talk about the demise of the Currie Cup due to the new Super Rugby tournament structure, but it seems that the grand old dame of South African rugby is made of sterner stuff! Below a look at the TV numbers of all this year’s rugby tournament in comparison with last year’s Currie Cup numbers:
2012-comparison.jpg

One obviously needs to take cognisance of the amount of Super Rugby being played, and that a large number of those games shown on TV would be between two teams from either Australia or New Zealand, or between an SA side and one of our SANZAR partners (and thus only attracting one fan base), but to see the average viewership per Currie Cup game subtantially bigger than Super Rugby is an indication of the strngth of local rugby in South Africa.

SARU no doubt base discussions with SANZAR on numbers like these, assuming that the Currie Cup will always be strong. But it will be interesting to see how the Currie Cup does this year – in the second year of the new S15 structure. The fact that it is back to being a six side “Strength vs strength” tournament will no doubt keep it attractive, but if 2016 is all about making Super Rugby even bigger, this is the tournament that will suffer …

A slightly deeper look into the 2012 tournament numbers thus far:

So we provide the sponsors, the money and we basically lose/demote the Currie Cup for a measly 3 or 5 percent more money? Louis Luyt must be kicking himself for not being part of SARU after seeing that numbers.

... and the SARU and South African Rugby don't get anything out of being part of Super Rugby.

Please.

We got a couple of percent more that is the only thing they get out of it. Clearly we can get that same amount with just the Currie Cup. I would love to express how exciting it is to watch from a fans point of view but Super Rugby has nothing to do with that. Its there and shaped to make money and more money.

You don't think Super Rugby is one of the reasons why Southern Hemisphere rugby is so dominant over Northern Hemisphere rugby?

Nope. SH have been dominant before Super Rugby. NH lack of analyzing the "whats hot and "what not" have been costing them in recent years. Woodward and his multi million dollar ProZone system help England back in 2003 and Trymaker+ employed by Verusco is helping the Kiwi's. We had the human version of those systems called Jake White, Australia had McQueen and Jones. They are gone now so you got something cheaper called Deans

Piet Snor hit the right button. Luyt should be shitting himself with the way Hoskins and Marinos gave away our rugby heart beat which is our CC. The CC was losen from the Sanzar dealings but now they cut back on the Premier division in teams and matches. Stupid I would say. Our Varsity Cup competition draw more viewers then Aus and NZ S15 audiance.

PB im not sure where you are going with this argument?
Its to late now to go anywhere. We stuck with it and hopefull some wise guy at Saru will look at them and prepare better when they go into negotiating the next S100 deal.

Did the Currie Cup clash with the WC last year?

Real shame, Fox here have stopped live Currie Cup coverage which I don't understand. Nothing else is on during those hours.

Crowds attendances has been disappointing at the CC matches but pretty surprise to see the CC beats S15 rugby in SA.

Eh. What are you wanting to achieve in the next round of negotiating?

Wouldn't that have to do with timezones? You can't really call CC rugby better quality than Super rugby.
