The Combined States team came 3rd in the Nationals last year.
They defeated Victoria in their play-off on the final day.

To show how close the competition was last year, NSW2s who won it over NSW1, only just scraped into the Final by the skin of their teeth over Victoria. NSW2s gained a bonus point in their loss to Qld1 by less than 7 points.

Combined States were a very good team and like NSW2s they gelled really well as a team during the week. In contrast, NSW1s didnt come together as well as a team.

Jordan Petaia from Qld was one of their best players for CS at only 17 years of age. He went onto play for the Barbarians and was earmarked as a rising star. As expected, he has been selected for Qld1 this year.

EDIT Petaia was 16 and the Qld 9 must be good.

SLV,
A very accurate re-collection of last years brilliant effort from CS. There was great camaraderie and they did 'gel' together. The very few(maybe just 1) that tried to be the lone 'star' stood out like a sore thumb, but the overall success of CS(2016) was about team work and players doing their job and trusting each other. . . uuummm umm reminded me of how the AB's are playing atm. You cant single out any Individual as the 'star' its definitely 23 playing as a MJ :p ).
* Jordan Petaia the then 16 year old centre/winger, benefitted from a strong support from the 'older boys'.
* The 9 for Qld 1 this year? Phoenix Hunt is a classy half-back in the mould of an Aaron Smith(mho). . .
* this Qld 1 team appear to be a well gelled unit ..to be proven next wk against ACT(Monday). Very balanced and mature team with Harry Wilson the incumbent schoolboys lock from last year spearheading their campaign to put Qld schoolboys rugby back into top honours .

* Most of these traditional favourites NSW 1&2 - QLD 1&2 would have learnt from last years first round debacle(s). So I dont think there will be any complacency come Monday 3rd July.

The players spend a week in camp so it depends how they bond. That can make a big difference.

The wet conditions threw a spanner in the works last year as well but it was no excuse for any of the teams.
They all had to adapt.
Good weather is predicted for next week.

Check this lad out Emosi Tuqiri

Rob Sutherland, News Corp Australia Network- June 13, 2017 11:29am
QUEENSLAND schoolboy Emosi Tuqiri is 190 centimetre tall and packs 125kg of ball running, scrum crushing power.

The 16-year-old behemoth powered his schoolboy team Marist Ashgrove to Queensland’s AIC premiership this week and capped the victory off with selection to the AIC First XV.

The nephew of dual code international Lote Tuqiri, Emosi provides far more than just tight-five power, showing off silky ball skills and the ability to cover plenty of ground when charging the ball up.

Watch the video below and remember the name — Emosi Tuqiri — because you will be hearing it again.

Impressive size, hands and mobility. Reminds me of last years Opeti Helu. I suspect he will be relishing the opportunity to play against either or both QLD1 and QLD2.:D

I can only assume selectors query his ability to sustain mobility for 70 minutes. Certainly based on the highlights reel he will be very entertaining to watch next week!

Q haven't won since GPS moved rugby to term 3. Closest was 2015 when Hamish Stewart almost slotted one from out wide on full time in the final against N1. Maybe this year. Some good signs of player form from the trials and with Mick Crank and Rod Seib with the ones and former Q1 coaches Mark Moxon and David Cooke with the 2s it could be time.

He's drawing Tongan Thor comparisons for good reasons, he's big and dynamic.

However, physically he needs more polishing up than Thor (he's a bit chubby). That's probably why he finds himself in Combined States and Thor found himself playing Auckland 1st XV.

Article from last year - see link below - includes a write up on 4 of 5 of QLD 1 starting tight five this year - Harry Wilson, Eugene Koorts, Moses Alo-Emile and Trevor Hosea. They were picked at 5, 17, 18 an 19 in this QLD GPS team of 2016. Sounds like they could be a handful.

.

What we all have to remember is the majority of players in QLD teams are all u17 if not 16 years due to the commencement age of schooling in QLD. Some players / students repeat year 12 as they seek to gain selection in both their state and Aus teams. So indicating the obvious one year age difference the NSW teams should beat QLD everytime year after year. Big difference between 16 yrs, 16.5yrs and 17 yrs playing 18 yr olds.

Yes, but I think you'd find a surprising number of the rep teams are 18 years old. At a glance I can see 4 and I don't know the ages of many of the squad.

Emosi Tuqiri definitely seems to have the skills and size. What impressed me most about the video was the opposition. At Schoolboy level, even 1st XV you can get gunshy players when taking on a guy that much bigger.

They may have been bumped off but not one of them stood off him.

On a more technical note (and with only this single video to go by) I don't think he will have a long career unless he makes some changes to his running. He hits fast and hard and in almost every hit-up, fend and tackle he leads with his right. As he moves up the levels it's going to limit his options and possibly lead to injury.

I hope the coaches can work on this because he looks like he got the size, strength and skills to go a long way.

100% - selections should go on current performance not last years, who to say last year selection was a fluke !

Someone in the know, not secondhand, give the readers an update on the so called team rehab players, like how is Billy SMITH aiming up for the Monday for NSW 1 , first game of the day. So here is a player who only played 10 minutes in the trials before being subjected to a what appeared to be a serious ankle injury. Takes no further part. However is selected with big injury cloud. From what I have been told SMITH failed the medical last Saturday however coaching staff, against their own policy, named in the team and given him more time to prove his fitness.

I thought BIlly Smith (scots) was in NSW 1s coached by Lachlan White from trinity. He has been the standout player for Scots this year hope he has recovered as looked a heavy knock against CAS when he came off. I'm sure Lachlan White is all over it.

Seems blatantly clear to me there's something amidst here!what say others?

The three words that come to mind would be...

'BENDING THE RULES!

As far as I was aware policies are put in place to adhere by, it sure doesn't seem to be the case here does it ?

Billy Smith from Scots failed Medical and yet named for
NSW I !
Coach for NSW II - Head coach for Scots 1st XV! ( an association ?)

NSW RUGBY home page:

The following players who have been selected to represent NSW Schools at the Australian Championships to be held at Saint Ignatius' College from the 2nd to the 8th of July.

NSWSRU 1st XV:
...... ....... .......
... .....,.. ....... .........
B Smith (TSC),

All players are required to meet at NSW Rugby HQ Moore Park at 8am for their medicals.
Any player WHO DOES NOT make THE MEDICAL WILL BE REPLACED and NO CORRESPONDENCE ACCEPTED

NOT MAKING the MEDICAL would surely include NOT PASSING THE MEDICAL , therefore a player under an injury cloud should not of been listed in a School's state side - full stop!

He would however still be eligible for selection into one of the Australian Schoolboys teams, at a later date as outlined on the ASRU website-
SELECTION PROCESS AND GUIDELINES FOR 2017

Players who are not participating in the national championships can be considered for selection in one of the two national schools teams if they are available, but precluded from playing because of injury or serious misadventure.

I know of a player who trialled in every game for selections into his 7's state team to play at the Schools National 7's tournament held in Perth last year 2016

This 7's player made it successfully through every trail game, ultimately receiving a phone call from his head coach telling him he had been selected into the states 7's squad's first team, however, just a week before the Nationals and before the team list was posted this player was told due to a recent injury he had sustained and not as yet deemed fully fit, it put into question, would he be fit enough to play in time for the Nationals? therefor Selectors going by correct protocol had no choice but to stand him down and a replacement brought in !
I can assure you this Boys's name was definitely NOT ON the state team players list selected for Nationals 2016

So with the B.Smith situation above this further puts doubt into mind -
Are these school selections done fairly and without bias ?

Thoughts anyone?
