Ballymore Redevelopment

Is anyone able to provide an update on how the redevelopment is progressing out at Ballymore?

Demolition still occurring, there was a mountain of community feedback for the Ministerial Infrastructure Designator application, so wouldn’t be surprised to see a few amendments to that. A reduction in the commercial footprint most likely IMO.

But the 2032 Olympic Bid submitted also has Ballymore identified as the Hockey location, which supports the MID application and if approved gives the QRU more freedom to develop Ballymore and generate revenue from the site.

I have friends in the area that have been vocal leading reaction and they are not happy. Starts with the commercial content for sure, but it is basic local NIMBYism as far as I can see.

Yeah absolutely, and if i were them i would be concerned about over-commercialisation of the site as well, so for both parties i hope they can meet somewhere in the middle.

Ministerial Infrastructure Designation don't go through the same process as the BCC Development Applications, they exist to reflect locations of greater infrastructure significant than your standard application which may be assessed under a DA. Which is why the Olympic Bid will be a critical factor in supporting the application.

Gee, mixed feelings seeing the progress of the demolition. So long McLean Stand.

So will the field be replaced with a synthetic pitch temporarily?

Yeah imagine that will be the case, although they could even opt to replace it with a synthetic rugby field pitch following the Olympics. It’s 10 years away and the synthetic grass continues to improve, it’s not out of the question.

At this stage I believe the plan is that it will just be an overlay pitch which will then be relocated elsewhere as a legacy outcome.

Demolition officially finished this week, construction will start in a few months and open late next year.
McLean stand will have 3010 capacity(slightly more then the old).

Yeah. Didn’t have to rush out in those days. Arvo footy and all - the bars stayed open.

Just thinking when I moved to Brisbane in 96 we would go to super games and have a beer in the bar behind McLean stand, think there was often a band playing etc. Loved it, made a good night at rugby, but perhaps didn't discourage having a drink and then driving home.

Back in those days that bar was packed even during the games. Know a few people who'd go to Ballymore and not watch any rugby.

Construction due to start in October, interesting the MID still isn’t approved so not sure how they’re planning that start date. Maybe now the Olympics have been won and Ballymore identified as a site it will assist in expediting the application as infrastructure of key significance?
