Newington were deserved winners. The Knox brand of rugby that they have stuck to for years is plodding 10 man rugby. Pods of forwards standing off the 5/8 getting picked apart by a very committed Newington back row (especially the No.6) who knew exactly where the ball was going every time. Helen Keller could see where it was going!!
The knox outside backs didn't even pretend to run dummy lines and only touched the ball thanks to New's kicking game. The Newington skills level was also far superior with a number 11 who has to be one of the fastest rugby players I have seen.

Knox have some very talented players, loads of potential and a big well drilled forward pack but the game plan is very predictable and boring. Unfortunately the same style is being run through all the younger grades as well.

Newington struggled at scrum time but stole knox lineout ball constantly. The 5/8 looked composed and had the luxury of spreading it wide to a massive outside centre and Jimmy the Jet on the wing. The support play by the hooker and tighthead was exceptional. Not sure they have the power to go against Scots and Joeys but some talent in the team even with some players missing.

Credit to Knox lower grades, many parents were nervous before the day after some tough results last year but the boys stood up and played tough. 14As was a cracker of a game and by all accounts so was the 15As. The only A grade blow out was in the 13s.

Completely agree, Homer, this week New have Scots and that will be an acid test for them. A good showing this Saturday could determine how much of a threat they will be, to both Joeys and Scots. I also believe Knox had four players out with injuries and that would have made an impact in their play.

With regards to the U/13s, I though your A Team played very well and were unlucky not to score in the game. They are good team, but, Newington have some exception players in their A team and will mostly likely be good opposition for all other schools in their age group.

I don't anything interesting to add except to say I saw the U16 "boys" down at QP on Sat, my God there were some big units.

Newinington 36 beat Knox 12

What a game,at one stage New only lead 19-12

The difference was without doubt the Newington Backline. Fast, stylish and precise in its support play, excellent in its ability to change direction and an ability to play the entire length and breath of the field with the ball in hand. The first try was a length of the field effort, where the New Winger caught from a Knox pass the ball and out run the cover defence.

Knox stayed in the game, with grinding forward play and two opportuntistic tries through their backs.Their pack put the New Pack under pressure, particularly in the setpiece.

Thanks Black & White - a good summary,

I suspect Knox are pretty disappointed with their performance.

They looked good with their first try in the third minute. Cheal (8) received the ball from a ruck near his own 22. He drew in 2 defenders and passed to Hughes (4), who split two defenders and offloaded in the tackle to Grobbler (2). Grobbler made 15 metres before passing to Stewart (13), who stepped inside the Newington #9 before passing to Evans (11). Evans beat the Newington #14 cover defence, and ran it around to score under the posts. 7-0 to Knox.

Four minutes later, Knox were hard on attack, with Breden (7) brought down by the Newington #15 just centimetres short of the line. From the ensuing ruck, Knox had an overlap on the right. A bullet pass off the ground cut out the first Knox player, and the Newington 11 just got his hands on the ball before it hit the unmarked Knox winger. The Newington #11 sprinted 100 metres to score.

That was a critical 14 point turn-around, which saw Newington grow in confidence, while Knox then couldn’t put the phases together - dropping too much ball while being too predictable.

I suspect that Knox must have missed almost 50 tackles on the day, whereas Newington would have missed less than 10.

The Newington backs gave the Knox boys a lesson in hard, fast, deceptive running. I think Newington might surprise a few teams this year.

We in the 16s had the same, a Gregs boy dislocated hi elbow in the 1st 5 mins, ambo called, played 30 mins. Not good, poor boy.

Yes he survived & had an op to fix it, but will miss out on all the rep rugby for 2019

Rumour has it that cranbrook travelled down to train/play against newington this afternoon.

Heard it started as just 'shoulders on' and obviously heated up a bit.

Cranbrook supposedly took it too them and were dominant across the park.

Sounds like the boys from bellevue hill are fired up for the season.

Great to see Augs and Waverley getting the chance to play on Manly Oval in 16s and opens as Manly have the bye. Hallowed turf.
