TDO here;

After watching the Knox VS Cranbrook replay, and now watching origin.

Can see that new no. 15 from brook showing close connotations with Kalyn Ponga.

Quick feet. Fast mind. Good step.

TDO.

5 takeaways from a great weekend of CAS footy:

Barker over Trinity: 37-24
Cranbrook over Knox: 22-19
St Aloysius over Waverley: 22-5

1) The competition is wide open, one of the tightest in many years. Would be a fantastic year for a ten round comp, however, the pre-season games really showed the CAS teams have some grunt about them, beating or challenging many gps teams.

2) Anyone can win on their day. On a cold, windy afternoon on one of the less pleasant grounds in NSW, the Aloys boys took 'death valley' with a point to prove. Having been written off all week, some even feeling sorry for them, the boys in yellow and blue came out firing. For the entire game Weber was instrumental, running, kicking, defending and setting up tries he was stand out. The Waverley boys (for the most part) seemed as though they didn't want to be there as Aloys ran circles around them. On a dark day for the 'double V' there were 2 shimmers of light through captain Rice and fly-half Volkman. Great win to Aloys and I'm sure Waverley will look to bounce back next round against Cranbrook.
3 points: Weber (15 Aloys)
2 points: Allen (4 Aloys)
1 point: Volkman (10 Waverley)

3) Although I wasn't able to make it, all reports sound as though it was a messy one between the red and green. However, what the scoreline does show is that Trinity are not to be taken lightly. Against a team who remains the only undefeated team in the competition, the Trinity boys managed to hold their own (to a degree). Those who play them towards the end of the season should be prepared. Barker leave the round as the only team without a loss, I'm not sure if this talk about points being stripped or not is true or false (probably the latter) but one would have to call the red machine the favourites heading into the representative break.

4) Game of the round IMO: Cranbrook over Knox. What an event, schoolboy rugby at its best. On a night that could hardly be considered pleasant at all, the Knox powerhouse brought a strong crowd which was more than reciprocated by the masses of Cranbrook boys assembled on the hill. I won't go into too much depth as P.Parker's report covered it perfectly. But the major takeaway is that Cranbrook are a team of work horses who evidently wanted it more. While lacking individual talent, seen by the lack of CAS reps (and fairly so IMO), the Cranbrook boys scrapped hard all game, often defending their own line. Jake Taylor was great in the centres in both attack and defence. The forward pack for Cranbrook looked as though they had something to prove taking it to the knox pack all game, particularly the back row. Smith at 9 was great, controlling the game exceptionally with his boot and made some crucial tackles. For Knox, they didn't seem to want it in the first half, but to their credit, fought back hard in the second half, pulling ahead at one point. They missed Gratwicke at 8, while the young man filling in for him tried hard, it just wasn't the same. Breden at 7 was exceptional once again and led from the front for the Knox boys. Evans at 11 can run. Conclusively, I'm not sure if it was the change in jersey against the cranbrook white, or the friday night fixture, but Knox just didn't seem to be as present as the Cranbrook boys.
3 points: Smith (9 Brook)
2 points: Cranbrook backrow
1 point: Breden (7 Knox)

5) SCHOOLBOY RUGBY IS THE REAL WINNER OF THE WEEKEND. It is hard to describe what a weekend like this does for schoolboy footy, two underdogs getting up over 2 powerhouses. A 4 way tie for second place heading into the break, its absolutely anyones game. CAS rugby is more than alive folks, strap in for round 3, huge games ahead. Would love to see the CAS 1's and 2's take it to an outstanding GPS crop, carn the reds.

Anyone got any footage from the Aloys v Waverley matchup?

SSMM

SSMM,

I'm afraid I did not get any footage, however can assure you the 'Christmas in July' esque miracle was one to behold. A spectacle one could not quite catch on camera, it was an electrifying experience. Schoolboy Rugby is alive and kicking, and boy what a time to be alive. For those who reminisce of the 'glory days', I can, with confidence, say they are well and truly back. I think maybe go to WLF for some footage, if not someone else will soon upload a highlights video to the thread.

Gentlemen, strap yourselves in, we are due for a wildly exciting photo finish to this years competition.

Look out GPS!,

Bet my name would describe any dad from Waverley on Saturday afternoon
Just to put it into perspective, The Aloys win on Saturday was the first CAS match victory by this cohort (all bar their 10 are in year 12), for their entire senior school days - bar 2016 when the school forced a number of boys from the year above to play down in their age group.
Little wonder the celebration mirrored a grand final victory.
I'm in agreement with several posters that many of the Waverley boys just looked disinterested and took the win for granted.
Several of their boys I'm sure did not attain the representative honours that they expected.
Well done Aloys, and I'm sure they will warmly welcome Barker to Tyneside Ave for their first home game of the year.

Don't worry MP (Moana Pasifika), there was no way I was missing that game, just let me watch it again!!! I had a gut feeling the boys from Milsons Point would pull through and so they did. For myself, I though Charlie Webber (15) for Aloys was man of the match. Despite a couple missed penalty kicks, his field kicking was exceptional and this was only backed up by his tackling. Similarly, not sure of his name but the 5 really stood out. All hitups were strong and plenty of double rucks. But most of all, how about that grubber try for the winger. Now that got the crowd going! As for Waverley, I just think Aloys wanted it more. Their 5 had a stand out performance (Alex Rice), as any captain should and IMO he was done wrong being put as a reserve 2s CAS player. Either way, the Aloys boys getting up opens up the season even more than Friday night had and I cannot wait for next school term!

"many of the Waverley boys just looked disinterested"

I wasn't at the game, so I don't know. But I dislike it when a defeat is attributed to the attitude of the players. My experience is that at 1st XV level, almost everyone tries their best almost all the time.

The truth is that this Waverley group wasn't especially strong on its way through the age groups (unlike, say, the current 16s). Yes, it's been strengthened a little along the way, but it seems to me to have been weighed down with unrealistic expectations. It's a good side, don't misunderstand me, but not so good that any defeat needs to be attributed to a bad attitude.

Look: a million years ago, when I was in Year 12, we played a Waverley side at Queen's Park that was undefeated in the CAS rounds (though it lost to St Patrick's). They were better than us. They should have beaten us (everyone else did!). We had never beaten them in the As on the way up. Yet we hassled and hustled them, scored two breakaway tries, and came away with a draw. Maybe they took us too lightly. But they also played as well as we let them play, and the bounce of the ball went our way. It happens. And it isn't necessarily a sign of "not wanting it enough".

Sometimes when the Boys feel under the pressure of expectation that disinterest can manifest as a coping thing. But i have no doubt too that those Boys did their best considering the amount of Rugby they have played. They are only kids.

Couldn't agree more SSMM. IMO he out played the 15 from Waves (D'Agostino) and it makes me wonder why Weber is on the shadow list and D'Agostino is starting 1's. Did he have a bad game against aloys or am I missing something

Well said J Dog, I don't think D'Agostino had a bad game, in fact he played quite well, he was just outplayed by Webber. Haven't seen too much of D'Agostino apart from his game against Riverview in the first trial. As for Webber, he too played quite well against Cranbrook in Trial #5 and was possibly the difference in the narrow loss, many will contest that idea.

Having watched both, I still find it quite difficult to come to a conclusion on who deserved the starting spot. Often I think that people can be swayed by the most recent performance, yet when selecting players for representative sides you have to look at the whole picture. I think that this is why D’Agostino got the starting jersey. It can be difficult picking people based on preseason and a short CAS season. I still believe that the sides should be selected after the final round of the season

How could Weber be the difference in the narrow loss to Cranbrook? Aloys lost that game.

Yes, seems like a common theme amongst all of the CAS teams: that waverly players are selected for the CAS representative teams after questionable performances

Have to agree. How did he even get picked? Disappointed more Aloys boy didn’t get selected. We are better than Waverley and Cranbrook only won with a charge down?

More aloys boys should be in CAS. Simple!

Alos got 10 across the 1sts, 2nds and shadows - same as Barker. At least the Boys are in the rep squads, even if it is not the 1's. If they play well they can go further.

Aloys_win,
I can't say I agree. Winning one game doesn't make a season unfortunately. Agree Weber was hard done by and certainly one of our best but I can't say that many other boys were unfairly treated. I think some shadow players got very lucky but that is how it goes. Otherwise, keen to watch the boys take on GPS!

Have to disagree. More aloys boys deserve to be there every year. We are always overlooked.

I wonder if WLF still feels sorry for Aloys after their dominant display on the weekend? He has been very quiet! But was scared of how we would exist in the long term for CAS? Maybe it’s waverley we should be worried about eh WLF? Despite the “new boys” that arrive, Waverley still couldn’t win.

Well done to our coaches for out coaching the Waverley ‘coaches’ as well. Well deserved for their hard work in the off season. Probably comes when they don’t try bring players in but develop what they have that makes Aloys a better place. I believe it was fairly easy to spot weaknesses in the Waverley team and manipulate those weaknesses as well.

Aloys_win, you should never kick someone when they are down. Aloys' showing against Waverley was commendable and I was rooting for them sideline at Queens Park, but Waverley will bounce back. They always do.
