I trust he is not playing that silly default USA summer game of Basketball compared to our National game of Cricket.

If Knox is any different to Waverley, and I hope so, the drop off/summer default game of basketball is completely destroying our school/National sport of Cricket. We have only 1/2 teams in most cricket age groups vs 10+ in each Basketball age group.
Why, it's simple, basketball is the prefect drop off for parents who would rather have a coffee with friends, and leave the babysitting to the coaches/school.

That is an absolute fact, know lots of people, who don't realise it when they the say it, they think that's a part of the schools responsibility. What a joke?

Aside from the A/B'S in Basketball, the other 10 age group teams consist of everybody who wants to find the quickest and easiest way out of a compulsory summer sport.

Similar vein to soccer's growth over Rugby because mummy doesn't want little Johnny to ever get tackled. So we pick the easiest/softest way out. Good luck in future life!
The parents are doing it for themselves.

Probably not a politically correct comment BUT it is a fact.

Can't wait to hear all the excuses.

No summer sport for him........he's working hard in the gym, but no running for another month.
Knox has 2 to 3 times the number of b'ball teams to cricket, which I think is partly because of the point you made, and the fact that its a pretty diverse school nationality wise. Cricket doesnt rate a mention with most of the boys it seems.
Anyway, bring on rugby season and enjoy the cricket this summer mate.

I would actually say that weights and fitness is a bigger problem for cricket at Waverley than b'ball is (in the opens at least - agree that b'ball sucks out cricketers in the junior years). The number of talented cricketers who think preparing for the rugby season is preferable to bettering its cricket stocks is a big worry. I would hope the rugby coaches actively encourage good cricketers to continue playing it and that they will be just as competitive for higher rugby honours idc. They could even write programs for them to do during the season (and remember there is a VERY long period of no cricket over the holidays when you can bulk up to your heart's content). But I know they don't, and are never pressed on it.

BJ,

I agree with you re the opens and your other points.
The loss of cricket players starts early, eg from year 7, weights and fitness doesn't come into play at that stage.

The teachers do encourage the good cricketers to continue, and the good basketballers, they aren't allowed to dump their current summer sport. My point is that Basketball attracts way too many because for a lot of parents it's a quick fix.

A sad example is in the 9's cricket where we have an A team, and only 8 players left to make up a B team.In this age group Basketball has 8 teams. Yet when the Aussie cricket team plays all the grounds are packed, you can't get in, the crowds for BB do not compare, so it's not because the population is so swayed to BB.

Hot Take: Tom Gratwicke from Knox is the starting #8 for CAS in 2019. Just made NSW U18 7s squad.

He's got all the skill and talent but he needs to harden up. Went missing in a few games but against Trinity when he turned up the team dominated showing he can get the job done.

I admire your love of cricket, and I cannot fault your reasoning as to why some parents choose basketball over cricket. But as a parent I'll explain some of why I wouldn't don't push my son into cricket.

Time - absolutely a factor. Spending however long in Sydney traffic, then a couple of hours at sport followed by traffic is not conducive to family time. That's very important to us. I also have to consider other children.

Interest - a personal preference, as a spectator, watching my son spend half the game sitting on the side waiting to bat or standing around waiting for a bowl or the occasional hit to his place in the field does not excite me.

The last one is a real biggy.....Basketball is one of the best cross training sports for rugby. Ball in hand, footwork, peripheral vision, communication and team work.

After all is said though, if my son wants to play cricket, I'll support his choice.

None of this is to suggest basketball is any more or less than cricket. It just that not everyone is abdicating their parental responsibilities to socialise over coffee.

......as for soccer's growth over rugby. Should probably look at the state of administration before accusing parents of choosing the "softest way out".....but that's a whole other forum debate;)

Can't argue with your points,as it's true all these issues can be relevant and for many boys all is true, and I am certainly not suggesting that everyone is abdicating their parental responsibilities.

It's not that Basketball isn't a good game at all, I just have seen that below probably A-C level (so the vast majority of teams these days), all of the above is probably not true, often parents don't even turn up to watch.
You still need to get into traffic regardless of the sport, and a lot of people do have multiple kids to consider, so the same applies to any sport.

One of the misunderstood areas about cricket is that the games are limited overs, so against all the comments like "it goes all day" it doesn't. Cricket is probably not promoted well in a lot of schools, and it is our National sport.

My opinion is that Basketball is a default sport for a whole lot of reasons for the majority of players but clearly not the serious players.

The soccer issue is as you point out very difficult, and yes the state of admin is a REAL issue, but I don't think this is what mummy thinks about, it's the contact.

If another high profile non impact sport was on offer and only took 20 minutes, I suspect it would clean them all up!
Thus is the state of play for a lot of parents/kids these days IMO.
If playing a sport wasn't compulsory in the big schools, I bet the number of teams would dramatically reduce in these sports.

This debate is the exact reason why the cricketing governing bodies have been hard at work in the past and at present in modifying the formats for junior cricket.
Because of the time and enjoyment factor for players and parents.

It's been playing on my mind a little bit recently, and that's the outcome of the big dance for CAS rugby 2018, and who will be crowned victorious. With the class of 2019 coming through and being the 'big-dogs', who will be the stand-outs for the comp and what is everyone's predictions on the final outcome of the comp.

I think it's going to be a two horse race this year between Knox and Waverley, a rivalry which has become quite strong over the last few years with last being an exception with Knox's very, very poor season. And I feel that this year with Knox vs Waverley being at death valley will add some spice to the mix.

The match-ups that I think we all want to see on the pitch this year between Waves and Knox will ones to remember for sure. Molloy vs Breden? Rechner vs Hutchinson Walters? Grobler vs Moretti? Volkman vs Fitzgerald?

I know it's only early days, but what is everyone's predictions / Match-ups they're keen to see for the upcoming 2019 season

I agree J Dog, although you still cannot go past Waverly as clear favourites for that matchup. Too many quality players returning as well as a number of quality recruits. Knox will no question be much much better then last season however.

Really like what you are saying here J dog, you make some really great points. I think it really is going to come down to that first game at Death Valley as well, as it starts off the CAS season and I can't seem to see either team slipping up after that.

Big S,

Knox played the Waves in the CAS 1st game this year, so I don't think next year it will be the 1st CAS game, I would think it will against the last teams we played this year.

Solid bet SBW,

The Waves have started pre-season training with approx 70 boys, including the 16s.
There appears to be lots of depth and quite a number back from last years 1sts.
Think they will be very hard to beat next year in the CAS, although I also think the level of competition in the CAS will be greater than this year with schools like Cranbrook and Aloys much stronger, Knox is a given, and Barker should be solid, Trinity no idea.

The "Trial" games v the GPS powerhouses, View,Joeys,Kings, and St Auggies will be much more difficult, you would think.

Keen to see what other school supporters think of their schools chances.

Knox played the Waves in the CAS 1st game this year, so I don't think next year it will be the 1st CAS game, I would think it will against the last teams we played this year.

I have actually heard that the fixture list this year will stay the same as last year just a swap in venues. This will mean for the first game of the season Knox vs Waverly at Death Valley and the last game of the season will be Knox vs Barker at Knox.
