Tom Wilson (B) was there last year, reserve for NSW 1s. He was excellent the one time I've seen him this year, and I'd expect him to be in line to win one of the hookers' spots. Junior Satiu (T) is a terrific player and it will take some very strong opposition to cost him a place in the front row. And, look, I think Henry Clunies-Ross (T) is special. I played with Rob Egerton in his early days at Sydney University, and Clunies-Ross reminds me of Egerton at the same age - he looks skinny and defenders think they have him covered, but then he takes off and he's quick and elusive and surprisingly strong. Not much chance of him shining tomorrow, though - if the rain keeps up they'll be playing in a lake.

you have got to be kidding me about cluniess-ross? Hes played one game this year and I'm sure even if he was playing the form paterson is in he would undoubtedly be the CAS 1st XV fullback. Paterson is far more allusive then cluniess-ross and i am yet to see him miss a tackle from the two games i've seen of his. cluiness-ross performance on saturday was far from as amazing, as you claim it to be.

No, I'm not kidding. I'm talking about seeing him play over three years in the Firsts. He's played only one competition game this year, but played the trials and (for example) ran through ten defenders from the Shore 1st XV side to score from 70 metres out. Last Saturday he was back after four weeks out and made some great runs in awful conditions. I have always said that the selectors would try to fit both him and Paterson in the side, and I expect he's not at full back because he's missed games with injury.

Well, first, why is it a zero-sum game? Can't you think that both Paterson and Clunies-Ross can play? It gets tiresome on this forum when praising one school or player always gets taken as criticism of another.

As it happens, I've seen Paterson play only twice and he did nothing out of the ordinary, but I'm happy to believe he's as good as his supporters say. Even if they can't spell "elusive". But I've watched Clunies-Ross play maybe a dozen games in three years and not once have I seen him fail to beat the first tackler.

Oh, and by the way, I don't want to push the Egerton comparison too far, but whilst I believe he was the best counter-attacking full-back the Wallabies never had, he didn't do too badly when they gave him a run on the wing.

Egerton was a top player wasn't he Snort - and rose up under the radar somewhat. I hadn't thought a lot of him but when I saw him for the Wallabies I realised how bad my earlier assessment of him was.

That's a good recommendation Snort - but does he play with his socks down too?
.

Socks! I always thought they were specially made anklets! Gee he had the fastest pair of chicken legs ... lmao ... We're Showing our age now fella's!

Yee hah! - the debate has been awesome (long live free speech and the right to make afool of oneself - Carpe Diem!) - far too many points to respond to - one of the best is that - this the first of many games today leading up to the Australian Championships - the photos taken today will not reflect the teams of next week or after that.

Good for some in that they quite happy for the tie and an expensive photograph and justifiably proud of their achievment.

Last years Australian Schoolboys evolved as the season wore on and was much different from the begining and that was over a period of five or six weeks. Though is when the fit and tough get going and the committed get results.

Skill and talent obviously helps - but you can be in the right time and the right place as the load takes its toll.

Over representation has the "State of Origin effect" - ask Wayne Bennett - always cost him after the games with injury and fatigue.

Imagine what the scores would have been if the selectors hadn't made so many mistakes!!!

ISA selectors ability to make fools of themselves is legendary. I agree with your thoughts.
mm how are oak hill playing currently though? are they winning ISA or did Auggies get up over them?... Regardless for those 2 players not to be in rep sides is strange considering they've played at a rep level (from what i know of them) in previous years

I made a call in the CHS thread that certain 'Dual Codies' were not selected because of their affiliation to league as well as rugby, and from accounts so far (as they pertain to the CAS game) CHS rugby as a whole is going to pay the price!

I honestly thought a corner had been turned after last years results from CHS; obviously not! I'm so dismayed, very sad indeed!

I like to watch

I think the bigger threat to CHS, is that their star players at 15 all miraculously decide to move to GPS Schools.
The CHS 1's are effectively the 2's due to the large migration of stars out of the CHS system.

CAS 2nds 38-12 CHS 2nds
and 1sts CAS 28-0 CHS

Both CAS teams played very well against a very sizable CHS squad. This was only my 3rd year of watching CAS/CHS games, but it was very encouraging to see a massive crowd. A large contingent of Cranbrook boys who came to watch at lunch and mid-way between classes, pockets of Barker and Trinity boys and also about 40 Aloys boys lined the closer dead ball line. This definitely boosted the CAS teams, providing great support.

In regards to the 2nds, it took them a while to get going, but after 10 minutes you would've thought that the team had been playing together for a long time. I thought Orr (T) and Kitchen (K) directed the forward pack very well, and with the brilliant steals from Wood (A) and Naude (B), gave great attacking ball for the backs. Vevers (A) really played amazingly, taking on the line and giving great balls to hard running Stolz (B). Ola (T) and Malaki (T) were work horses, providing a lot of go-forward and solid defense. I reckon Whitaker (W) and Vevers worked brilliantly together and I think Vevers will definitely be giving Clark (T) a run for his money. Overall, a great team display and a good game of footy. Congratulations to them.

The 1sts, even though getting a win, weren't as convincing as a team. Ultimately, all played well and should congratulated on a great win. However, today the line outs were not working at all. I'm unsure as to whether it was Mee (C) or Marais (B), but jumping was not working today. I think for the GPS game, Williams (A) will definitely be needed as overall he is specialist Second Rower and is a very capable jumper. The Barker boys of Pedersen and Wilson in the front row played very well, with a high work rate. Jenkins (B) played amazingly at half-back, providing very good service for Clark and contributing with some solid defense. The centres of Creeley (K) and Flaherty (B) played well, but they have played better for their respective teams on a weekly basis, but regardless reflected their solid attack and defense all game. This leads me to my next and probably the biggest point of the game. I'm a fan of Clark (T), but today he was really off his game. For Trinity he defends at fullback, but today was at 5/8 in defense. For Trinity he is hidden from the hard running forwards and this really showed today, he did not tackle very well with the big CHS boys running at him, and I think this impacted on his attack. He showed off his usual amazing counter attack in their own 22 metre with brilliant passes and great kicking, but really lacked the direction he usually has. His passes weren't meeting their targets and he looked very tentative in attacking the line, making it hard for the centres to display their skill. Vevers (A) took him off in the final 10 minutes, and especially after Vevers' CAS 2nds performance, I think selectors will be definitely considering him for the starting 10 jersey. OVERALL, the 1s played very well as a team, but will need to work of line outs and direction in the backs in order to overcome a usually formidable GPS squad in 2 weeks time.

Watched both games today.
A disappointing performance from CHS in 1's. with CAS playing solidly as a team , bustling CHS when they had possession , & not allowing them to develop any real momentum.
CHS cause not helped by receiving 2 yellow cards , & then a red resulting in them playing the last 15 minutes with 14 men .
Not much difference between the teams in the set pieces ,(although CAS did take a couple of their opponents feeds ) but CAS forwards were more mobile in general play, & hunted as a pack.
For CHS , Eddie Faigataa (T/H) ran hard until he came off with an injury , John Porch (no.15 ) was safe & made several good runs with the ball & defended well , whilst their best was probably Ofiu Manukeu (no.5)
For CAS Wilson (2) led the team well , Jenkins (1/2) whilst unspectacular gave good quick ball , & Creeley ran strongly , although at times could have let the ball go to his supports a little more.
In the Clunies -Ross v. Paterson contest , the result was a draw , both scoring a try , with Paterson fairly conservative after a bright start , & Clunies -Ross not getting a lot of possession although
he went looking for it.As usual when he did get the ball he invariably beat a least one tackle.
I would like to see them swap positions for the next game , to determine who should play where.
I must say I was disappointed in Jack McIntyre's game , as I was most impressed by him last year.
After making several attempts to run the ball early in the game , without much success , he seemed to change his tactics to simply unloading the ball to his outside backs , with mixed success .
His passing game is less impressive this way than when he mixes it up by probing the defence with ball in hand , when last year he always looked dangerous playing in this style.
In contrast Jamieson Clark ,concentrated on setting up his outside men with long beautifully delivered passes , which gave them that extra metre , & resulted in the CHS defence being under constant pressure.
On todays display I felt Clark had the better game of the two.
I was also impressed that CAS constantly used their significant possession to run the ball , seldom putting it to the boot.

In the 2nds CHS started well & their outside backs played strongly ,seeming to have the edge over their counterparts & probably should have scored more tries .
Eventually however the CAS forwards got on top & were too strong , particularly in general play , & they looked like running away with the game in the end.
For CHS their best were Aisea Tsufa (19) & Nick Burden (22)
For CAS , Sam Kitchen (H) played strongly , Luke Vevers was also prominent , but once again could have passed the ball a little more , & probably best on ground was Malaki Tiumalu Afele (no.5) .

In the 1's Nick Ebney (t/h) suffered a serious leg injury late in the game .

Overall ,the CAS sides were more impressive than I was expecting , given the comments on this forum recently about the alleged standard in CAS RUGBY , whilst CHS was disappointing .However , I have seen this sort of
start by CHS in previous years , & I anticipate that they will bounce back by the time they front up to GPS in the final game.

Oakhill and Augustines don't clash until 3rd term. Both teams have had 2 comfortable wins by similsr margins against similar opposition. ISA selection is all based around how you play in a couple of 20 minute trials with no regard payed to previous performances or experience.

Interesting views from two different spectators at the same game! As an impartial reporter I will defer to the latter's perspective.

The former's allegiances, though commendable, are somewhat one sided. Fan or no fan, this is not the first time he has pushed the Vever barrow!

Totally agreed. Disappointing performance from CHS, made CAS look better than the team. But credit where credit is due, CAS got it together and capitalised on mistakes and poor execution of game plan.

I swear I saw something similar written in the Sydney Morning Herald, however I believe the teams they were talking about we're Scotland and Australia ... lmao!

Interesting call, I see it as different styles, not necessarily a better player... Clarke did have 60 minutes on the field, keep in mind, and therefore had more of an opportunity to make an impression... I think it's a close one, vevers has won my vote based on how he played against barker alone, but from the 2 games i saw clark play it is extremely difficult to decide (one of them was in the pouring rain and he did not have much of an impact on the game as a result.. However there was no issue with his defence as people seem to claim is a problem for him). Vevers is undeniably a talented player, perhaps he should pass more, but i like to see the 5/8 go himself a little.

Vevers is undeniably a talented player

Geez, St Aloysius seems like a nursery of quality backs these days. For a small school, it sure is pumping out quality. Pat McCabe, Bernard Foley and Tom Kingston all recent products. Agree Vevers is talented, on today's form he deserves a shot against GPS 1's.

From what I saw today I'd have Vevers ahead of Clarke. Clarke places the ball thru the hands and the boot well but on 5 occasions today the CHS players targeted him and his defence was ineffectual to the point of running alongside them slapping at the ball on 2 occasions. Vevers is no Gilmeister in defence either but does attempt to make contact below the waist of the opposition players. McIntyre of CHS had an ordinary game as well but his halfback struggled too.
