Sean Stuart just got imported to Knox after injury to Billy Collins. Plays SG Ball for Manly. Seriously good talent. Will be in play this saturday against Joeys in 2s.

That's right. i dont think anyone wants to see Cranbrook disappear from the CAS comp.
It's accepted that the fortunes of schools are very much cyclical.

However, there was talk that Brook weren't keen on playing Waverley and Knox because they dont have a strong team this season.
Maybe its just talk.

Wow that is impressive organisation - a kid injured on Saturday, a quick trip down to Manly for SG Ball training - "Hey buddy, wanna scholarship to Knox? You'll have to start this week though - we need you to play Joeys 2s on Saturday". Incredible.

It frustrates me enourmasley to see people saying things such as "cranbrook should withdraw from the CAS competition" and things like that! This is such a strong CAS competition and every school has a year where they have a lot of points put on them. I can only think to 2014 when we saw Cranbrook win the CAS and then Newington go down to Scots 101-zip. Let's wait to see what the cranbrook boys have to show this year but for now let's be stop the crap talking.

SJ,

No one wants Cranbrook to go anywhere, no one wins every year, and every school has their ups and downs.

Hi guys,

We are getting together a preview of the CAS season which starts on June 3rd.

As part of that, different writers are going to do a small piece about the prospects of each school.

We have a few guys willing to contribute but we don't have enough to cover all the schools; so we hope that we can get a few ideas from forum members.

Please help to provide some bullet points about the team you follow.

They could include any of, or all of:

- how many from 1st XV returning

- pre-season form

- likely strengths and weaknesses

- nominate who you think will be the three best players in 2017. Just their names will do.

- any else different from last year not covered above, or any rugby trends in the school which may be of interest.

You could make remarks about the other schools you saw playing too - even GPS schools - they will have a season preview also.

We would particularly like comments on Aloys and Cranbrook who have not received a lot of coverage in the trials blogs. Trinity also.

Can you help our writers please?

Even just a couple of points could help.

Please write your bullet points in this thread ASAP please, or maybe wait until you see the Saturday trials first - but no later than next Sunday lunch time.

Thank you.

LG

PS - No silly bullet points please.

PPS - Sonny Dill Williams - can you help please?

Here is a bit of information on Cranbrook
- how many from 1st XV returning
1. Joe Pardey 4. Charlie Crammond 7. Peter Milios 8. Jake Broekhouzan 10. Finnbar Stenmark
Tex Ho(prop) , Oscar LS(Prop) and Alex Antonelli(winger) all had brief stintsin the first XV last year mostly off the bench. Also Andrew Glastras played last year and is in year 12 now but has been M.I.A. recently as well as the loss of Tom Lamens who is also in year 12 and played a significant amount of 1sts last year as a dominant centre.
- pre-season form
Lost to Marist Ashgrove in Brisbane (score unknown), beat Hale at home(score unknown), beat Grammar at home 22-12, lost to Trinity away 52-21, lost to Aloys at home 40-20
Only been at two of their games but if their preseason is anything to go by it looks like their CAS season will be pretty dark. They have shown brief moments where they have seemed to dominate both Aloys and Trinity but this hasn't more than a few phases. A positive coming out of their pre-season is the performances of Tas Smith and Alex O'Reily, two 16's who are gaining key experience and skill against talented opponents which will hopefully bring some hope for the long term of Cranbrook rugby.
- likely strengths and weaknesses
Strengths:
Stenmarks kicking game has shown to be one of Cranbrook's key weapons consistently kicking to space and challenging back threes. As well as Cranbrook's determination and heart will keep them going, no matter the score line they have continued to push and haven't given up
Weaknesses:
Set piece, Lack of depth, inability to compete at the ruck
- nominate who you think will be the three best players in 2017. Just their names will do.

1.Finnbar Stenmark
2.Peter Milios
3.Jake Broekhouzan

Cranbrook has a strong 16s and I wonder if they are better to keep Smith and O'Reily in the 16s rather than diluting their 16s team. Normally I would say 1sts come first but not sure given Cranbrook's prospective season. Perhaps they have strong replacements in the 16s.

Season Preview

In 2014 Cranbrook won the Henry Plume Shield … and hopes were high that Cranbrook was about to experience a purple patch, similar to the 1980s. The 80s was a period in which Cranbrook won the shield in 1982, 1984 and 1985. In the 1980s not even a burly 6ft 6 James Packer could make the 1st XV. And Cranbrook produced some solid Aussie Schoolboys in the likes of Mark Patterson and Justin McDonald.

Other names of note in the period included the likes of John Pilton, Ian Williams, Grant Lodge, George Alexiou and John Ryan.

With the 80s being a strong period, you might expect the sons of these Cranbrook old boys might be coming through now?!

However with a few exceptions (Pilton/Ryan/May?) the Old boys have seemingly deserted Cranbrook … and their sons are turning up at Waverley, Joeys and Scots.

Anyway enough of the history … what about Cranbrook’s hopes in 2017.

Pre-season form is not great – with an unconvincing win over Grammar – 22 to 12, and an almost respectable loss to Aloys 40-20. And some big losses …. incuding a loss to Trinity 52-21

In terms of returning players, the most notable is Finnbar Stenmark, a handy fly half, who behind a better pack might have CAS representative aspirations.

Sadly he doesn’t appear to have a lot of other backline firepower … and with Jude Gibbs (Cranbrook’s underage star) having left for Joeys (and playing in Joeys 2nds) and Xavier Ryan (nephew of John Ryan) also at Joeys, one can only wonder what might have been the 2017 backline.

Having said that Tas Smith (Year 10) is another under age star … and he is a handy scrum half, and will be one to watch, in the next several years.

In terms of piggies … the 80s and 90s saw Cranbrook surprisingly produce some great forwards … and two good 2nd rowers were Al and Ben May … and Oscar May has potential, to follow in their big footsteps.

Some of the more experienced players in what is a largely an underage group include Joe Pardey, Tex Ho, Jake Broekhouzan and Charlie Crammond.

There is potential in the likes of Tilley and Glastras …although now hearing Glastras has evaporated?

However one that I really rate is Alex O’Reilly … formerly from Waverley, and while not overly big, he has a huge engine … and has been a big part of a successful Easts Rep team.

Prediction: Against the heavyweights Knox and Waverley it is going to be like a 16As team playing a 1sts team. However if they can come through a tough draw, (their first 2 games against Knox and Waverley), without major injury ….. they could win a few games.

As a result, looking like wooden spooners, however with a bit of luck and a bit of grit, they might succeed in firstly earning some respect and secondly not ending up on the bottom of the ladder.

Players to watch: Stenmark and O’Reilly

good to see Waverley resting the likes of Wright and Cornish

and they have gone with an interesting team ... Moretti in the backs!

will be good to see Molloy at 8, although Rice at 1, could be interesting ... I think he is just too tall

oh well, certainly an unusual team will make the game a bit more interesting

and suspect it could be pretty close ... if View bounces back from a slow start to the season
