Storm in a tea cup. Although it would help if he had a blinder tomorrow night then people would be happy for him to have all night benders.

I wonder if there is anyone who knows how the franchises really deal with incidents like this, i.e., how do they balance the issues?

Some of the issues are balancing the value of the culprit to the team against the harm he has done to the brand, the effect on the morale of the team, managing the public perception, handling the press, dealing with the culprit, trying to prevent future infringements by the culprit or other players.

So far the Rebels seemed to be handling the off-field really well with their published values, community involvement, etc, then we get this incident which undermines the good work done so far and makes us no better than the loutish behavior by some AFL or League players. I thought we were aiming higher than that.

We are aiming to capture the hearts and minds of Melbourne people... our image is an important part of that... so for me it is not a storm in a teacup...

Yeah but it isn't really loutish behaviour at all, that's the thing. It's a bit stupid, sure, but compared to some of the stuff you hear about AFL and League players, it's pretty small fry. And hey, he is grabbing peoples attention, who knows, maybe the media will decide he's just a bit of a lad and give him a fairly easy time of it. I'll tell you what, if he punches a barman, then I'll join you in saying he should be sent off home, this just isn't that big a deal though.

I'd like to think there isn't much in it but I also got the juice that he was benched in the trial game due to a late night out. The Rebels are all about "culture" in a city that rocks with AFL scandal after scandal. If they are going to live their vision they need to sort this out quick smart regardless of the on-field cost. The life of a professional sportsmen is different to Club first grade!

Storm in a teacup? Absolutely.
further proof that he is a flake? Absolutely.
If people think he is entitled to socialise the same as most 23 yo's, then pay him the average 23 yo salary.
He comes with a tarnished reputation.
He couldn't be bothered to get here for the Club launch.
Never been off the piss since he got here.
He will never add value cos he doesn't care.
Man up Rod, put him on his last chance.Get yourself a cheap young Kiwi instead.

Its 4am after he's just played in a team that's had an absolute shellacking. He should be tired, depressed about his performance and every muscle in his body should be aching. So why, please tell me, is he in a nightclub filling up on vodka. Every time I have been in heavy training and my muscles are screaming and I have then had a glass or two (no more) of wine it makes me feel like absolute shit! I cannot imagine how bad it would feel 3/4 pissed.

Therefore I submit, as scientific evidence admissable in a court of law, that Cipriani has not been involved in high intensity physical activity for 90 minutes. He might have jogged around a bit and kicked the ball and been on the same patch of grass as everyone else but he has not really put in 110% effort for his team. If he had, at 4am he would have been tucked up in bed sleeping the sleep of the dead, totally exhausted.

There are lots of guys in the wider squad who don't have the DNA that you need to make it to the top. But I bet every one of those guys would have run till they dropped if someone gave them Cipriani's spot. That's what makes Cipriani's behaviour so appalling. He didn't leave everything out on the field on saturday night in a really key game against the best team in Oz.

He doesn't have what it takes to be a professional rugby player.

I think some of you might be missing a small part of your argument. I never claimed AFL players were saints, but the fact is, if there is a problem, then there are much bigger penalties than anything you would see in Rugby. Being at a bar at 1am during the season and doing anything that gets the cops attention will get you a suspension from your club and a reasonable fine. Usually by the players leadership group.

Tell me that the ARU is as harsh.

This thing with Nixon has no bearing. He is a 500 year old player agent, who may not be one for much longer.

I'm a bit bemused by the comment that this is pretty small fry. Sure it is, I agree. If you are a bricklayer. If you want to be a successful member of a successful club you probably won't put yourself out there like that. Cipriani moved to Oz to escape the media which had stifled his career prospects. So what does he do to change the image?

I don't know why this bothers me so much, but it was a bit like Gits missing from 30cm in front of the goal at Perth last year then grinning; it just shits me deep down for no real solid reason. I just look at other champions who actually achieved something. You see Freeman, Hackett, any of the Hockeyroos or Federer in the papers? You see the world titles they have?

Cipriani has done nothing to chest beat about yet (a handful of test caps? Fair enough, what else?), and has the kind of opportunity most of us would dream of. And he is wasting it. Do something with your talent, then fuck around....or fuck off.

He doesn't have what it takes to be a professional rugby player.

Mostly a fair point - however, the adrenaline involved takes time to leave the system, and I suspect there's a bit more of that playing a massive game in front of a national audience with and against elite athletes than in our park games or heavy training.

Added to which, a lot of pros take caffeine tablets and other stimulants (prescribed or otherwise) which add to the problem.

And, on top of that, if they're perfectionists they obsess over every thing they did wrong (not the 95% they did right).

It's why a lot of pro footy players use and sometimes abuse sleep meds. I don't know which, if any, of these apply to Cippers. But a doctor and/or sports psych might help the 'self medicating'.

Of course, he could just be a right prat who doesn't give a shit and deserves the boot! But I don't know him, don't know his situation so I'd opt for mediation and assistance before showing him the door.

I see a few of the hockeyroos in my dreams...

I reckon we wait til mid-season and see what Hill, Rod et al can do with him before dumping all over him (as in my above post). But I agree it's annoying to see guys with untested talent, wasting it for whatever reason. But shit, I hate to think what an internet forum would make of my life/wasted opportunities!

Guys that stuff with Ricky Nixon in Melbourne is all just hearsay. Nothing proven yet, especially the track record of the young lady involved.

The thing that really gets me with that story is, is that all the media blow up and accusations and frowning is all directed at Ricky Nixon while the reaction to the girl involved is, "Eh, she is only 17, girls that age simply don't have the brains to process decision making". Seriously, how old do you have to be these days before you are able to take responsibility of your own life? It's not like Nixon forced himself on her.

Really, she should received as much trouble from the media as Nixon. It takes two to tango.

Anyway, back to rugby...leaders of the Rebels, like Mortlock, need to give Cipriani the old Gregan stare and tell him pull his head in or fuck off. Fortunately for Cipriani, the Rebels cannot really afford to drop him for the upcoming game.

Cipriani cultivating a mild (ie marketable) "bad boy" celebrity image is sadly probably the best way to get the young ladies interested in the sport, short of turning him into a vampire. Young ladies interested in the sport leads to young men interested in playing the sport. It's a bit low but it's for a worthy cause.

Dunno JJJ, met a pretty lady recently at the rugby who was into it because her brother was a ref. That's pretty much the antithesis of bad boy.

Of course, Chariots set her a'fire so she had questionable taste when there was delectable man meat on offer like myself, but I think to assume bad boys are the only way is silly. And if you WERE to do it, an ugly Englishman probably isn't the go.

I've had the... uh... pleasure in seeing all the vision that doesn't make it on the news regarding this story...

And I can tell you that despite the fact that Nixon is a complete idiot... this girl is a manipulative little **** who intentionally set him up from the start...

Nixon really should've known better... but she is out to exploit and ruin everyone she can to get her blurred face in the news... before she's old enough to have her tits in zoo magazine...

I'm talking about young women, MrMouse, not sensible women.

You must be talking jailbait cause this lass was early 20s, stylish and nice! But I guess I take your point, we do want the loose ladies, the boozy ladies, the skanky ladies...we want all the ladies, and that means appealing to all the demographics. I still feel as though we can get a better bad boy than Cippers though.

Anyone have any thoughts on who our nominated marketing bad boy of Australian rugby should be?

Curiouser and curiouser...Wonder how long before said video floats around TPB, 4Chan, Youtube... Can you disclose whether he did/did not have sexual relations with that woman?
