I agree wholeheartedly with Whale berry regards the "involvement" and "lack of involvement" of Sydney Boys High coach staff and schooling staff in the Pius 2XV game versus SBHS 1st XV.
"Involvement" - The SBHS coach or manager that ran on to the field was screaming and threatening in his approach and manner towards one or two Pius players. This was completely out of line and unacceptable.
The incident in the last minutes of play in the 2nds game was again terrible - it appears that the Pius player reacted to constant "niggle", so he was the instigator in the refs eyes (and correctly so) because be threw punches at the Sydney High #8. These punches were inches away from the referee and very nearly connected with the referee himself. The Pius player should have been red carded. The red card to the #8 was a surprise, and so was the "show" that followed. Swearing, cursing, temper tantrums, kicking, spitting and throwing anything he could get his hands on was embarrassing for this very immature young man, but it was the swearing that was completely out of line. There were young boys and girls around.
The "lack of immediate involvement" by the SBHS coaching and teaching staff was very, very sad. Their lack of action was unacceptable.
Every parent in the stands was horrified.

Sorry I need to correct the teams

I must also point out that the Pius coach was also on the field - also unacceptable (and the half time whistle had not been blown).

Regards the Pius v Shore game.
Solid hit out for both teams.
Interesting that Pius played the starting 15 the entire game except for a late injury change, and Shore had 6 reserves and made 12-15 substitutions.

Agree that Pius #1 was solid. Thought that the #9 played well also - gritty little player that isn't afraid to take on the line.
Toohey shows class wherever he plays, but again lacked penetration at inside centre. Fullback is where he can really do damage (but understand that injuries necessitate him playing in the backline).
The new #10 will be better with another run under his belt (and needs to improve the speed of delivery both ways before the first real game in 2 weeks - ISA comp).

Shore have some absolute speed machines in their backline, and their forwards continued to go forward the entire game.
The score line is probably a true reflection of the game.
Shore bombed a couple of early opportunities out wide, and Pius made a few basis errors (not releasing the ball in a tackle, and a dropped ball that both resulted in Shore 5 pointers.)

Shore dominated the scrums for the first 15 minutes (fortunately not many scrums) and similarly strong after oranges because they ran on 6 pairs of fresh legs. At most other times the Pius scrum was OK (and did manage a tight head). It did appear that the ball channelling was disrupted numerous times and the halfback didn't get clean ball. Let's hope that injuries are the reason for that problem.

Should be an interesting last trial game for Pius playing Gordon U/17 this week.

Just wanted to add to your comments, The incident where the SBHS "manager" went on the field happened right in front of where I was sitting and I have to say that I didn't notice any Pius officials on the field.
Maybe he was a bit further downfield amongst the Pius players.

The SBHS "manager" ran on to the field and was there for 10-15 seconds before the Pius coach "crossed the line". He was definitely on the field as well but NOT confrontational or out of line. He appeared to be speaking to his players and calming things down, but really should have let that to the referee.

Keep the talk about the rugby.

General warning to all. This isn't a democracy.

Regarding the issues in the Pius v SBHS game, I have found that the most effective way to deal with these is to report the facts to the Sports Master or Head of School. These persons are well placed to discuss the issue with their counterparts at the other school, who will investigate the issue and take appropriate action once all the facts are known.

Don't expect Schools to take any action based on a post on a rugby forum.

Hey Billy,

Not taking into account of the above controversy.
Anything worthy of interest from the new players filling in (for the injured) in the Pius 1st pack?

I was very impressed with Ben Murphy, he is a Yr 11 boy, who has played mostly in the back row.
Moved into the front row and really held is own.
As we all know the front row is something that takes time to develop in.

I saw the incident and it appeared the Pius player didn't like the foot into his body from no.8 when he was on the ground, the ref was right there and the touchie 10 metres away. No.8 then while on the field said f*&% ??? and walked off the filed behind the ropes and then walked up the side line again saying f*&% this 4 or 5 times more and throwing his drink bottle onto the ground, he walked in front of the entire stand doing this. Not one SBHS offical talked to him until he had reached the opposite end of the field with done this in front of the entire stand.

I have seem this at SBHS basketball, SBHS athletics and now SBHS rugby in the last 4 months and it seems discipline, respect and sportsmanship is something they don't teach at SBHS.

Normally a parent would pull them up, but it seems a lot of SBHS parents don't come to their sports either.

Some of the other SBHS boys tried to pull him up, but the damage was already done.

And some outstanding performances by the SBHS and Pius boys too.

And with that rebuttal from a SBHS associate, the incident in the game between Pius and SBHS is now finished on this thread.

The respective schools will deal with the miscreants. We move on.

Further comment on that incident will be zapped and Posters placed in the G&GR Sin Bin.

Division 1 kicks off today
Auggies v Kinross
St gregs v Oakhill
St Pats v Stannies

Both Auggies and Oakhill will need to focus on todays game and not think about next weekends match at Oakhill on Gala day. St Pats v Stannies? Any thoughts.

Stannies have a few lads in the ISA rep team, and will be confident after a good showing in the trials against Riverview ( less their athletes). They should be too strong for St Pats, but the Strathfield boys are always tough at home and should make the Bathurst boys work hard for their victory.

Gregs Loig boys are unavailable. Different Gregs team when they can call on their "dual coders" towards the end of the season.

Augies and Oakhill will be too strong and should win their games comfortably.

St Pat's defeated Stannies 21-5

Pretty even talent on both sides - Carbo and Denford impressed for St Pats; Roebuck (good hands) and Burns (ran good lines) impressed for Stannies. Discipline let Stannies down. The ref blew the whistle a fair bit, but he can only ref what he sees before him.

St Pat's 21 Stannies 5

A great match at Breen on a balmy Saturday afternoon. First match of the ISA comp and St Pats starting as underdogs; the scene was set for some intriguing rugby.

The first 10 minutes was very even and each side went about their business. A routine scrum deep in Stannies territory caught everybody by surprise. The ball popped out the wrong side (St Pat's tight head) and went 2 passes down a wide blindside - TRY 5-0.

Pat's were having some lineout problems but their scrums were solid. Play ebbed and flowed across the park until Stannies were able to use their impressive backline to take a routine ball out to the wing for an easy try. 5-5.

St Pats took a penalty goal, an indicator that this was a tight match and all points were valuable; 8-5 half-time.

The second half was all St Pats. The forwards were penetrating with a bounty of willing runners. Phase after phase pounded into the Stannies wall and St Pats scored again. Stannies created a number of opportunities. Their quality back-line crossed untouched for 2 slick tries. But both were called back for forward passes.

Stannies became frustrated at their innability to score. The ref was giving the pea a workout and Stannies began to get on the wrong side of the officials; culminating in one lad being 'carded' for dissent. Pats calmly popped 2 more penalties to close the game out at 21-5.

An enthralling match and a great home win to St Pats.
