Seems the styles of the referees are having some impact on the results due to the flow.
Scots off side line speed against New allowed dominance, yet when the ref pulled them up on it against Joeys it was a different result.
Scots had similar outcomes last year showing cards early with style of play with no plan B.
Joeys leave a few tricks up the sleeve, lets see how it pans out this season in a couple of weeks.

Still no clearer at this stage for me , Joeys a nose in front of Scots and Kings with View and New half a nose behind!

Tough year ahead for Shore, they hang in though so possible upset in there somewhere?

Agree, Scots discipline is quite poor, which surprises me considering their professional coaching in Brian Smith. Scots do have an urgency and aggression in their defensive line speed but they tread a fine line. So yes, it really can depend on the ref for the game.

Also leak penalties at the breakdown which will need to be fixed. Against Trinity and Joeys they were rightfully penalised for ruck infringements constantly.

Do not discount Newington, their forwards dominated Barker on the weekend after their backline has been blitzing other teams.

A deadset bees-dick in it this year, think it'll just be whoever wakes up on the right side of the bed and remains the most disciplined, which has been Joeys so far this season, exception being the Knox game.

Re $cots being offside and their line speed

That is one eyed joeys talk ... imho

Sidesteppa footage was littered with background yelling by the joeys faithful

Going by the Joeys commentary ..... Scots were offside the whole game

I am independent of Scots and thought they were largely onside. The touchies normally ensure that in 1st XV fixtures

Joeys on the other hand are crafty ... the 9 occasionally will hold his pass. Very smart play.

Against kings it worked at least once .. as the referee was fooled into thinking the kings backline had broken early

Joeys can be like all black Richie mCcaw ....playing a weak referee, And pushing the laws right to the limit.

I think Joeys are getting back to the best .. where even when they have an off-day ... as they did on Saturday .. they are too good.

What happened to Sualli?

Was he injured in pre match

Maybe I put the Moka on him, when I said (in my pre -game commentary) that he loved the ground

Rod skellet, who was it from CAS (in 2018) that pulled off that "miracle" try saver on Sualli in the corner?

Dill, Scots were offside both matches vs New and Joeys.

Joeys worked it out hence the victory.

Thinks Scots need plan B.

Tap N Go ... are you a Joeys man ? Guessing so.

Like a lot of Joe boys you are too focused on $cots ...it all harps back to the Scots Centennary ... robbed.

I wouldn't worry too much about Scots's plan B

IMHO there are bigger threats to Joeys in 2019.

Either way AAGPS 2019 shaping up to be a belter of a season

They rested him due to an injury- don’t know how bad. Agree about your comments re joeys and refs....and to joeys supporters, that’s a compliment. Joeys teams are good at managing refs. The ref at bankwest allowed a far more physical game against Wav. I would like to know if that ref usually adjudicated grade and not schoolboys. Scrum penalties can be touch and go but the joeys scrum was going backwards and penalities were being awarded to joeys. Aggressive clean outs by kings were also being penalised. Last year, joeys complained about kings getting away with ‘illegal’ tackling and cleanouts when I saw both teams giving it to each other and both teams pushing the line. I suspect the joeys camp reminded the ref before the weekends game with a few edited video clips of last years game. Joeys players were also ducking into the collision and head highs were being called. No criticism of the joeys player, he should be getting lower in contact but the defender was also doing nothing wrong and contact was on the chest. But this is all apart of beating joeys, especially at home.

There is only 1 referee among the GPS/CAS 1st XV games who specialises on schoolboy fixtures. The rest are regular grade referees.

No not a Joeys man , however like the style of play.

Rugby Season

Spoke to some Kings supporters who may have been just being cagey but there was talk that Sualli has hurt his shoulder and could be out for the season but this should not be taken as gospel that's for sure. Peninsini out last Saturday due to playing in NSW Rugby League Under 18s side - interesting one in itself but reflects the times. Certainly would be interested to know how Joeys & say Riverview would react if they had somebody in the same boat! Would they be allowed to miss a trial 2 weeks out from the comp? Suspect not but such a policy may be tested over the next few years if it happens to either of them.

I'm tipping Riverview this year after what I saw on Saturday. Written off early but should surprise and feature particularly if they can get through the early games with only one loss and will be pumped to make amends at Joeys which only a few years ago was a happy hunting ground.

SDW

Ben Brydon, Barker, was the try saver.

There is no question as to how Joeys would react to a player prioritising a RL game over a school rugby fixture - they would be dropped (and possibly for some while). I remember, I think it was in 2016, when in the last week of the holidays one of Joeys outstanding backs went to the RL Nationals instead of the Joeys rugby camp (which was just after the U18 Nationals in July) and he found himself in 2nds for a couple of weeks. I don’t know of any player at Joeys who would even contemplate putting a RL game ahead of school rugby. The difference being that at Joeys attendance at certain school and GPS events is mandatory (Rugby is one) not optional for players and students. And that is made abundantly clear, repeatedly during ones time at the school and is what contributes to the ethos of the place.

It’s exciting to have a competition where any one of 5 teams could win. I haven’t seen New or View play yet but suspect they will lift. With only 5 matches you can barely drop 1 game and certainly can’t drop 2.

The things that will influence this will be a combination of the draw, who is home/away, injuries, fitness, the weather, referees and goal kicking. The two more extreme Joeys games (49 -47 and 10-5) both game down to small things. In one game Gibbs kicked everything, in the other the difficult wind conditions saw him miss both kicks. But one missed tackle out wide towards the very end decided that result.

Joeys have adapted their play to whoever the referee is and have generally ensured they are on the right side of the penalty count in most games they have played. That’s down to discipline and captaincy.

The weakest part of Joey’s game is their scrum which hasn’t been pushed around for the last two weeks. I’m expecting they will have a tough time against Newington as well. But apart from that they are a team of scavengers and jackals and have the most complete backline from 9 to 15 (Kings would be within a whisker) but I give Joeys the points over them in that both Joeys tries were scored by their backs. So if they get enough ball and can set the backs free and kick the goals I expect them to do well and right now they would be deserved favourites but not by much.

The loss to Knox was an aberration and reflected the absence of Gibbs and they weren’t the same team without him. So injuries will also decide things.

I thought the referee at the Hill on Sat did a very good job. He was thorough, competent, clear, sold his decisions well to the players and worked well with the ARs to draw them to one side and talk through the two challenging decisions he had to make (one around the grounding for the first Joeys try and the other around the high tackle penalty in the act of scoring and whether it warranted a penalty try - close but no). Gave 1 yellow card, again on the ARs Report.

Good luck to all the teams and enjoy the rugby.

Yes Joeys have always done what the Brothers have asked of them.

Following last saturday there is renewed hope from this Scots supporter.
First half lost to Knox 7-5.
Second half beat Knox 35-7.
Complete turnaround.
Flowing rugby, ball kept alive and a growing confidence from the backs as things started to click.
The Scots performance in the first half was akin to the performance against Joeys.
The Scots performance in the second half would have trounced the Joeys team that were on show at Bellevue Hill a few weeks ago.
Knox versus Joeys was a very close game.
The Joeys faithful might just be getting a little ahead of themselves.
Joeys decidedly vulnerable.
If Scots can build on the second half performance versus Knox they will be very hard to beat.
My prediction is that 2019 will not be Joeys year............you heard it here first :)

Interesting re what Joeys do to the Leaguies. Yep ... Joeys don't stand for any egos.

ROUND 1 Tips .. getting in early

With Will Penisin back into Kings team and Sualli presumably too ... I can't see Riverview having any luck at Lane Cove.

So with Kings likely to account for Riverview, Scots almost certain to run Shore raggard, that leaves Joeys v Newington as match of the AAGPS Round 1

Newington really hasn't had too bad of a pre-season, it was only the Scots game, where they were slightly understrength and got run raggard (schredded).

So Joeys are no sure thing. Newington has some high quality players ... so some key match-ups might be

Hookers
Joeys (2) Louis Robinson versus Thomas Maka

Wingers
Sam Kanaan (11) versus Tolu Koula

Fly Halves
Jude Gibbs (10) versus Mack Fell

Centres
Chan/Obrien (12/13) versus Kaeo Weekes & #

My tip ... a close one ... with the Joeys backrow of Dalton, O'Kane and Bokenham to be the difference.

PS O'Kane ... I know he has the bloodlines ... but interesting that in pre-season he wasn't slated as making the 15.

PS2 Joker ... are you just lurking now ? Sulking?
