NSW AAGPS 2020

Genuinely silly theory.

Reality is that Shore have been forcing rowers to choose and effectively opt out of rugby for a long time. Their rugby would have benefited from having more towers available. During the very dominant 80’s - 90’s period for Joeys the forwards were typically 50% rowers.
That was a simpler time, the game was slower and the skills of the young lads was far less than the current period.
I don’t think it is a silly theory.

Anyone thought about the correlation between shore having an unreal rowing program and a sub-par rugby program. Anyone else under the belief that rowing can inhibit coordination?

BP
While the skill sets each respective sport demands are quite different, the strength and endurance of a rower would be hard to beat on a rugby field.
Perhaps it’s more a matter of technicality and finesse, rather than sheer athleticism and strength.
Rugby is, after all, a game of inches.

More to come.

That is one of the great urban myths of GPS.

From this years 1st and 2nd viii there are at least 7 rowers playing rugby in either the 1st’s, 2nd’s or 3rd’s. From the 1st and 2nd iv there are at least 3 rowers playing 1sts, 2nds or 3rds. And they are just the ones I know of.

This is a really silly discussion.

I agree it has finally changed. I know of many 1st VIII rowers at shore over the past decade who have been told to choose.

As far I'm concerned the entire queensland GPS comp is competitive, with no weak teams (although BBC has never won a premiership.)
I'm sure our newcomer friend Alexander will be able to offer more insight.

I am no friend of BBC rugby, but in their defence, they enjoyed a four-way shared premiership circa 1954.

It’s never been any different Marlow. Captain of 1sts last year rowed. Captain of 1sts 3 years ago rowed. I could go on. My son was in the shed 5 years and plays rugby so I’m pretty familiar with the process.

I’m not really keen to engage with this discussion but I can say that as the S&C has evolved over the last 5-6 years the training has become more specialised such that it has become more difficult to be the optimal body shape for both Rugby and Rowing based on the goals they have given the students and the short turnaround between seasons. Let’s just say that both programs have become more specialised and it has become more difficult for students to manage both sports from a physical requirements perspective. I doubt the coaches are saying “you can’t do both” based on the conversations I’ve been involved in however I do know that they are set pretty specific physical goals and there’s a lot of kudos to row in the 1st viii so I can see how kids think they can’t do both. I’ll leave it at that.

Back to the rugby. Here is how Joeys dad's use their ute and 4WD's.
You couldn't see a game standing on a Rolls could you.

Hey WLF, rumour has it that the CAS was also invaded by young rascals trying to play with the big boys as well.
Yes Joker, it seems to coincide with school hols.
It's often dribble.
Is the GPS comp definitely proceeding?
I have heard mixed messages, and will it still be live streamed?
There will be plenty of eager viewers.

Correct TME, but they also entice with what can't be mentioned on this thread, not judging btw, just different from SBHS rugby. Recent Qld GPS comp' is a different than our AAGPS rugby in their approach as a whole. Nudgee have always been strong regardless.

AW would be able to give better incite.

Brisbane SHS and Sydney BHS are both 'selective' state high schools but that is where the comparison ends.

Sydney BHS is bound by the admission policies of the NSW Dept of Education which has performance in the Selective Schools Test as the sole criteria for admission into a selective high school. The Principal has no discretion in Year 7 entry. He or she can apply different criteria for admission in Years 8-11, but very few spots come up.
Year 7 Enrolment

Each year 180 students are selected for entry by reference to a state-wide test administered by the High Performing Students Unit, moderated teacher assessments in English and Mathematics, and to an achievement profile supplied by applicants. Students are offered places on the basis of a rank-ordered composite score and a preference list of up to three schools.

Years 8, 9 and 11 Enrolment

Applications for places in Selective Schools for Years 8, 9 and 11 are advertised in the media from late June each year. Each school has its own policy in respect of filling occasional vacancies.

Brsbane SHS has 4 different pathways for admission to the school at Year 7 and beyond: academic, music/artistic, sport and local area. This preserves the academic and musical areas of high achievement while preserving the sporting culture of the school. It's a model which the NSW government should follow.

Prospective students can apply for enrolment at Brisbane State High School (BSHS) under the following categories:

Since Wristy has no idea that life actually existed pre 2000, here is a flash back to 1982 SJC team.

This was the first S.J.C. side in history that every player made GPS sides.
The four and against was a record at the time .
The back line with GERALD O'HEARN, STERLING SMITH, PETER RYAN, PAT HUNT, SEAN FLANAGAN.
Australian school boys from this team were Paul Farrel (8) and Gerald O'Hearn (14)
Watch the finishing of 14. Best winger I ever saw in the 1980's.
The most exciting tries ever scored at Joey's True rugby at it's best ....Sorry the music is of its time.

Plus it gives an insight as to how the game has progressed and shows some classic moments in time, in particular the SJC v TSC return game after the infamous clock stopping, field goal in 1981. Enjoy.

What a great video joker.
No matter what team you support, it’s hard not to love a video like that. It just goes to show how great rugby truly is and why we love it.

This century Joeys have won 22 premierships (1st, 2nd and 3rds) to Scots 8

Joker, out of interest what was the win:loss ratio when Joeys played Scots recently. I think Scots may have won the 14a’s but that’s it from the A’s, 1’s or 2’s.... ratio last year would be very similar. Thought I would just point that out given Wristy’s obsession with recent data.

I've got wind that it will restart on round 2 and round 1 will be played later on this term maybe on a Wednesday.
