48TH AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIPS​

The 48th Australian Schools Rugby Championships will be held at Knox Grammar School, Sydney, from Tuesday 5 July to Saturday 9 July 2022.

The first match kicks off at 10 am Wed 6 July, with the girl’s and boy’s finals kicking off at 1.20 pm and 1.45 pm on Sat 9 July.

The Championship includes a Boys Schools U18s and a Girls Schools National 7 tournament, with eight boy’s teams and seven girl’s teams totalling 290 athletes representing 4 states. The Girls 7 tournament includes an Open and Under 16 divisions.

This is the first time a Girls Schools National 7 tournament has been held to coincide with the Boys Schools tournament.

An Australian Schools ‘Australia A’ boys team and Australian Schools Rugby Union 7’s Girls Merit Teams (Open & U16) will be announced from the athletes competing in these Championships.

Announcement of ASRU Boys Australia A and ASRU 7’s Girls Merit Teams

An Australian Schools ‘Australia A’ representative boys team and Australian Schools 7’s Girls Merit Teams (Open & U16) will be selected from the athletes competing in these Championships. The teams will be announced at the Championships and Award presentations following the finals.

The Australian Schools Rugby Union 7’s Girls Merit Teams (Open) will be invited by Rugby Australia to attend a national trainingcamp to be eligible for Australian U18 selection..

Australian Schools Rugby Union tour to Japan in 2022

The ASRU is delighted to announce that the ASRU Australia A representative boys team of 27 selected at these championships will undertake a three match series tour of Japan in late September 2022.

This tour of Japan continues the tradition and success of the Australian Schools Rugby Union teams touring the world to advance the game and provide extraordinary opportunities and unforgettable life experiences for school students.

This team will visit the Prefectures of Kanagawa, Chiba and Tokyo and is being made possible through the generous support sponsorship of many Australian and Japanese businesses as the two countries. It will forge greater links and educational opportunities develop for education, sport and cultural exchanges, and international student opportunities while promoting the internationality of rugby in both countries in promoting rugby participation.

“Over the 52 years of touring, the Australian Schools Rugby teams have competed in a wide variety of countries including New Zealand, Great Britain, Japan, Canada, Netherlands, Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, South Africa and France. This exciting return to touring, post COVID, will be welcomed by all in schools’ rugby in Australia and Japan,” said ASRU President, Kevin Culliver OAM. “It is also very exciting to incorporate the the Girls 7 tournament in the Championship for the first time, and to announce the two Australian Schools Girls Sevens Merit Teams.”

The short answer - No.

It is picked exclusively from those who play in tournament at Knox.

This basically means that the best 23 (or around that) in Aus make Australia Under 18, then the next best 50 or so players make no national team, then those sitting around the 70-100 in Australia make Australia A and tour Japan.

Go figure!

This is what AUS has ro fix. Pathways for the next best 50 cause this is were the strength and depth of Aus rugby comes from. Who's to say all 23 "best"players stay with rugby and don't go to league ? Then your looking for the others and they may not be there. A plan, as previously suggested is to scholarship them off overseas ( NZ, SA, Europe ) for 2-3 years. Play and get coached by good quality people, study and then hopefully come back and fill in the spots thst could be available for senior AUS teams.
Can't afford to lose them.

Sorry for my ignorance. Can someone explain how it works? The players in Gen Blue NSWRU U18 boys are considered the best players but they don't play in the Australian Schools Rugby Championship? Instead they play the Reds Academy etc. Is it from this group that the Australian U18 are selected? Then if you're good enough to make Gen Blue - but not good enough to make Australia - you cannot play for Australia. But if you are not good enough to make Gen Blue but make NSW I or NSW II you can then be selected in Aus Schoolboys? Then is Aus Schoolboys lower than Australian U18.
Also are NSW I and NSW II selected on merit (IE is NSW I considered a better team than NSW II)

I believe that there is no longer "Australian Schools" - it has been amalgamated with U18 and called "Australian Schools and U18".

The pathway system is confusing, more like a garden path. The Riverview tournament has been devalued by precluding those boys still at school, but selected in Gen Blue. So the NSW1 and NSW2 Schools teams have no Gen Blue players.

And yes, NSW1 is selected ahead of NSW2, meaning they theoretically have the better players. Doesn't always work, of course. NSW2 can and do beat NSW1 occasionally.

Hi All

Just because it's a cracking day and I like reminiscing,

Had another look at the last 4 mins of Scots v New. Scots leading 27-21 way on Cluch.

Off the kick off, New played a perfect ( hence scoring under the posts and converting ) game. Patience and determined running was the key. From 69.33, from the New line out, there was 10 phases before the try. on phase 6 New spread it and took the right option to not overplay their hand and come back towards the posts. Memories of the 21 phases it took to beat View on the bell at Stanmore a few years back.
This New team has IT. They just need to play smart. Well done boys.
