Strong team. Fair few yr11 I think, but if they are good enough then play them. Forwards will be strong and a backs are quick but will they handle the heat this year? Trials will give us a good indication. Tough one against Joeys. Stay with them and give you confidance for the Comp games.

Private schools aren't schools anymore, they are a business that has to justify to parents why they should spend $250+k per child for high school. Joeys seem to have a much greater number of students of old boys who have grown up with the school being as it is as well as limited numbers hence not such a need to sell the school. Others have to provide a huge range of extra curricular activities, sports, drama, music etc to attract high fee paying students, thus the pool of available rugby students is shrinking.

The other factor is the changing demographic of the students. Students with a language background other than English (As per the myschool website year 2020), Joeys 5% Shore 7%, SIC 8%, New 13% Scots 17%, Kings 25%, Aly 16%, Barker 25%, Cbk 24%, Trinity 53% ???, Knox 39%, Wrv 4%. Other sports like volleyball are gaining popularity as a winter sport not to mention AFL and Football, this can be offset a bit by the number of students.

It would be interesting to see what peoples perception of the major selling point of each of these schools.

Parents, particularly Old Boys will always send their boys for the Rugby, Rowing and just the sense of tradition and the identity and status it brings. Yes, they have evolve to becoming more institutions of academic excellence. But at there heart will be that sense of GPS belonging. Parents, who simply are looking an academic education. Will be become disillusioned, as this can be found within our Selective Schools within Public Education.

As for more more activities, that is a nature growth in an expanded outlook of sporting choices. That has been happening for decades, In the 1960s, before the introduction of soccer. It was often spoken that a GPS boy played two sports in winter, Rugby or Nothing. So its been a nature evolution for GPS schools, to add to their Sports curriculum. The same has also occurred, with the Academic Curriculum, with the addition of Legal studies, Business Studies, Religious Studies. With the IB, Global Politics is now being taught.

As for Rugby numbers, most GPS schools will still field 5,6, or 7 teams in the 13s It's just that soccer does the same.

As for the selling points of each school, that would require a Ph.D.

Changes to the backline are good. Glad to see McGregor at 10. J. McLean will bring some speed and flair in the outside and Quin at fullback will link well with wingers. As mentioned, with a few minor injuries, New's depth will be pressed but for now, solid team. Will be watching the defence of backs.

KNOX drop off in rugby is concerning as they were the bench mark for years in Prep rugby and this flowed through the senior school. In the good old days of the late 90's and early 2000's beating KNOX in Prep rugby was like beating the All Blacks. These lads made up the bulk of CIS rep teams and went on to play NSW Primary Schools. Because of the Prep school boss (Mr Bob Thomas.....great man) he would make sure rugby came first, then the round ball game. This flowed to the senior school as well. Year 7 would field 6/7 teams made mostly of lads who came from the Prep, Trinity went early with their "play what you want" ethos and their Prep rugby program died. This of course flowed on to the senior school and they suffered badly till someone opened their purse and "acquired" players which is perfectly allowable in the CA$ competition. Barker was one of tthe last bastions of CAS rugby but falling to this liberal left leaning, latte sipping, navel gazing, woke world of basket weaving only Waverley will be left to compete against GPS schools and they probably win their competition with regularity.

I'd agree with you on most points Joker, as an old Knox Boy of the 90's. We had age group teams down the "G"'s in some years and when we were in year 12 we had down the the 12thXV! However a change of headmaster to a more "academic" headmaster, a demographic change and the allowing of student to play random sports such as AFL, surfing and shooting put pay to the extensive rugby teams. I would have to disagree with you on your point of Bob Thomas being a "Good man" anyone who allowed what happened at Knox to continue never was and never will be a good man.

Matty is still kicking around at the Riverview games? He was a crowd favourite when we played View in the 90's!

Hello Propsarespeedy
Marvellous and Impressive, but where do Scots get so many players for their Open Division. Is there a massive intake of newly arrived boys into years 11 and 12. Or do boys previously playing soccer, make a conversion to the one true Sporting faith in Winter time.
