Just seen GPS teams. I’m a Newington Old Boy with some family members at King’s so a few observations:

1. King’s who are leading the Comp and may go undefeated have 5 boys in GPS 1s and Newington who have only won 2 games has 4 boys selected.
2. The Captain of King’s was not selected anywhere.
3. The King’s 14 wasn’t selected last year or this year but will still be part of two premiership teams.
4. Luca Cleverly was selected in GPS 1s but his older brother Matteo who is the Captain of Newington rugby was ‘only’ selected in GPS 2s.
I think this point is interesting and proves what a lot have said about the Newington side. They have talent throughout the team but it doesn’t pull in the same direction or look to have a game plan at times.

It's simply a coaching issue, when you compare team list to team list (riverview vs newington) Newington look to have the better side, but watching the game, Riverview were composed calm and took their chances playing as a TEAM using difficult to defend set-pieces. All of the newington tries were from individual efforts from the Newington backline.

Good point. AAGPS teams often look for consistency in combinations. There have been plenty of talented individuals overlooked for the sake of consistency.

About to watch the game now. Just finished Kings v Shore.

Ok. Teams have been selected. Some are happy and some are throwing their toys out of their cot.
I know people here want the best for their mates, school etc. Goodness knows I do.
Disappointment is a part of life.
How you chose to deal with it reveals your character.
Let's move on.

3rd XV Round 3 Report
An exciting round of rugby that has consolidated positions for the leading teams on the competition ladder. Grammar and Scots remain undefeated while Kings and Riverview maintain their positions one loss back. They are certainly close enough if good enough to retain the shield. For Joeys, Shore, TAS and High the task becomes extremely difficult with two losses or more.

Scots 31 d Joeys 24
Scots came to Hunters Hill undefeated and left that way after an impressive victory over the home side. It was a very close match throughout as expected, but Scots prevailed in the end. Scots established a 12-7 lead in the first half but a late Joeys try just before half time saw the teams tied 12-12 at the break. Scots scored first after the break to go up 17-12 but Joeys responded immediately to lead for the first time in the match 19-17. A converted try to Scots regained the lead 24-19 and then with only a couple of minutes remaining, Joeys tied the match 24-24. The conversion was unsuccessful and it looked like it could be a draw, but a late surge by Scots gave them the match winning try on full time. This was a thoroughly deserved win to Scots whose willingness to spread the ball paid dividends and ensured that they remain undefeated on top of the 3rd XV competition table. They will be very hard to beat in the remainder of the season.

Kings 15 d Shore 7
Another close match at Northbridge that really could have gone either way. Kings scored first with a clever blind side play in the 8th minute resulting in a converted try. Shore were extremely unlucky to have a try held up in the 15th minute and the teams went to the break without further change to the scoreboard, Kings leading 7-0. A loose Kings lineout throw in the 35th minute resulted in a Shore try and a great conversion tied the match 7-7. Kings worked their way into Shore territory and regained the lead with a penalty. Then with only a few minutes remaining, a perfectly executed backline move off a scrum gave Kings the deciding try to win the match. What a quality play it was! This result means that Kings are still very much in premiership contention with key games against Riverview and Grammar still to come. For Shore it's a tough road home.

Grammar 33 d TAS 7
Grammar remain undefeated sharing the lead with Scots at the top of the table after this convincing win over TAS in Armidale. Unfortunately no match video for this game but Grammar have continued on as expected, maintaining their unbeaten run in the first three rounds. They play Shore at home next round and will be wanting to continue without a loss in their quest to regain the shield. TAS have been on the receiving end of some big scores recently and travel to Kings next round.

Riverview 46 d High 5
Riverview delivered a comprehensive victory over High at Centennial Park today and served notice that they are still very much in this competition. I hoped that High would get closer to View in this match, but it's a big ask playing against a team in such good form. Riverview move on now to play Scots in match of the round next time out. That will be the true indication of how they are travelling, and potentially a must win game if they are to win or share the 2023 premiership.

Well done to all - a great round of rugby before the holidays. See you all for the next round on 22 July.

Completely correct. This has been a long standing issue at Newington (last year for example had an amazing back line on paper and so did 2021). Unsure why the coaching staff haven’t picked up on it.

Might be a timely reminder for all posters to refresh their understanding of the forum guidelines, particularly regarding the school boy thread. These are children, not professionals (who also suffer terribly from public trolling).
zero negative comments towards individuals please.
Sure express your disappointment at selections, happens every bloody year.
BUT NO PERSONAL ATTACKS (which includes performance)
I enjoy this forum but some content is puerile and I do not want us locked.

The kings captain was selected in gps white or blue I did forget but he is the number 8.

the kings 14 you are referring to is currently in the 2nds, he is coming back from injury but the current 14 watts did make a GPS side like every other player in the kings team.

Just watched the Joeys v Scots game. Joeys must be relieved to get the W.

Scots should be filthy. They blew a lot of half breaks and chances. This felt like the View v Joeys game in reverse. The Scots Backs were going through the Joeys Backs fairly easily at a lot of points throughout the game but didn’t finish off many of them.

Joeys 9 kicking game from the back of rucks gets them out of any trouble straight away. Joeys did the simple things well and executed when points were on offer.

I think Caleb Murphy really stood up at 10 for Joeys and moving Broe to 12 has made a substantial difference. Chick also did very well at fullback.

When you consider they have now used 4 different 10’s, 5 or 6 wingers, 2 or so fullbacks and at least 3 different inside centres is is nice to see a hint of combination develop. They only 2 positions that have had the same lad in the jersey every game are 9 and 13.

13 boys selected to start in a gps team for kings, 1 as a reserve and 1 was selected in pres A. Overall great result for the school and as they are by far the best team in the comp it is well deserved.

unlucky result for some players being placed in lower teams then expected but still a great reward none the less.
Thanks Smithy.

TIPPING RESULTS

After a difficult week we got there.

Some though missed my message and did not tip and the gods of the away winner was limited this time.
Again the margins did play in helping others make ground on @rugbyAU but consistency matters.
Only one person tipped Shore and I have great admiration for them.

Yeah it’s impressive show of depth and coaching to have guys ready and able.

Scots 12 has some very quick feet and looks like he always has time which the good players do.

Joeys won the Forwards battle which will 9/10 end up winning the game.
