Qld Premier Rugby 2023

The lack of an Oceania Comp this year for the U20’s leading into an U20’s RWC could well leave the Junior Wobs well underdone in meaningful game time, but that shouldn’t be Wests’ problem to fix.

Is it not happening in 2023, or has it just not been announced yet? Took until May 2022 to announce the July 2022 competition on the Sunshine Coast.

Don’t think it’s happening - the u20s are heading off to South Africa for World Cup

think from a individual development standpoint QPR >>> Oceania u20s

but a warm up game for the squad chemistry and combinations is essential.

I don't understand why we don't have an U20 Rugby Championship as they do in the 6 nations? Is it lack of money, lack of interest? Seeing the U20 Aus, NZ, SA and Arg teams do battle would almost be as interesting as the main event and ensures regular fixtures on a yearly basis. Aus could still play in an Oceania comp at a different time of year.

Maybe because the 6 nations is a stone throw travel schedule from each other - no need to lodge and travel halfway across the world which Aus, Nz, Arg & RSA would all have to commit too.

Other issue is time of year - if you were to play an under 20s rugby championships at the same time as the rugby championship it would run immediately after the under 20s world cup, which ends up being a bit arse backwards. You'd either have to play it as under 19s as prep for the next year or run it early in the year, the window they traditionally went for for the Oceania championship.

SouthernX answered this, but my understanding is it's not happening. The tournament was previously played around Easter and involved Japan, Fiji, NZ and Aus. It was a pretty handy warmup tournament leading into the Junior RWC which is generally a June/July competition. Hopefully they can organise a few games against some senior teams from QPR/SS before heading off to South Africa, might be a little tricky given those comps will be midseason, maybe against whoever has a bye?
