Queensland Reds 2026

Major Tom

Ron Walden (29)
Though they're both good prospects I'm not entirely convinced Werchon is ready, and even more so Martens. Even if they are we still really want 4 available to cover injuries. That said, Will Cartwright is also good cover, and has been around the group for some time so should be ready to slot in.
I forgot about Cartright. Even more reason not to shop for a half. I have Werchon above Cartright just needs to sort his temperament. Martens will come good. Just don't expect him to play 70mins each game. I do hope Thomas goes somewhere (force!) where he can start most matches.

Wow!
I don't know how we managed that one! We are stacked at scrum half. I would 100% support Tate getting a sabbatical now.
Tate already had a sabbatical built into his contract but has elected not to take it:

That may have come down to his ability to get one (apparently it's not so easy for halfbacks at the moment), but given he's come out in the press to say he won't be taking it I can't see that changing now.

Yeah ok. I didn't realise he said he was not taking it. Probably makes sense with a halfback as you want to lock down the conduit between forwards and backs for longer than a season. Although, maybe Thomas could pass on the clubs that were into him...

I think the sabbatical was only on offer for 2026, that's why other players are taking up that option.. Given 2027 is a RWC they aren't letting players take them, that's my understanding anyway. Could be wrong.

Fantastic news about Kalani. His passing game when he comes on has been extremely noticeable compared to Tates, seems to be constantly out infront of the target and is a bullet.

According to Christy there has been no uplift in the salary cap this year:
Nonetheless, with RA opting against increasing the $5.5 million salary cap moving forward, sabbaticals and creative deals, which temporarily relieve financial pressures and allow players to spread their wings, will continue to be on the table in the years to come.

More of a concern for Super Rugby franchises, however, is the squeeze on recruitment and retention.

While most Super Rugby franchises expected there would be an uplift in the salary cap following the collapse of the Melbourne Rebels, that has not occurred.

Makes all the retention we've been able to manage a bit more surprising, but probably means bigger name signings are less likely from here, at least without RA assistance. Might also explain the number of single year deals right now, there must be some expectation it'll have to be increased soon.

Store Local also sponsor the Tahs and are naming rights sponsor to the QPR Hospital Cup…Hans Pearson, owner/CEO of Store Local is also on Rugby Australia board.

the guy is passionate about the game and backs it with money/time.

In celebration of the Reds winning the 2025 Super Rugby Championship(prematurely), i've created this thread to track re-signings. And I got sick of providing/tracking running updates in the 2025 thread, it'll be easier to just pin this for the 2026 season, given the number of players re-signed.

Would the Reds potentially bring in Flyhalf Finn Mackay (Souths) who is currently in their academy into the squad, he looks to have a very bright future?

Hopefully HMP re-signs, rumoured to have but not announced. I’d say given he is 17 Finn he probably has another in the academy at least, but they might sign a long term contract with him to upgrade to squad from 2027

There was an article this week claiming his management had reached out to all the Aussie sides & none were interested.

Other plus is Quade's also looking for a gig next year....
Surprised this didn't get more media attention, but Quade's turning his attention to LA2028 in... flag football.

No idea what this means for his rugby career but could be curtains.
