I can't watch the replay yet. The app doesn't work

Just tell me, it was a good or bad Reds performance? From 1 to 10

Marce, Questionable one dimensional game plan to play field position from the Reds. First 10-15 not a good advertisement for the game. When both teams played rugby, it was pretty good.

What part does Tate not understand you can't stand on other side of opposing 9?
I don't think the laws refer to being behind the other 9, it is about where the ball is until it is fed, it then appears that he can move to the other side of the 9 while the scrum is being contested..

The numbering is wrong as the copy paste did not work properly.
Law 19 sections 28 and 30

  1. Prior to the start of play in the scrum, the scrum-half of the team not throwing in the ball stands:
    1. On that team’s side of the middle line next to the opposing scrum-half, or
    2. At least five metres behind the hindmost foot of their team’s last player in the scrum and remains there until the completion of the scrum.
  2. Once play in the scrum begins, the scrum-half of the team not in possession:
    1. Takes up a position with both feet behind the ball and close to the scrum but not in the space between the flanker and the number eight or
    2. Permanently retires to a point on the offside line either at that team’s hindmost foot, or
    3. Permanently retires at least five metres behind the hindmost foot.

The result was as expected, I did not have an issue with the kicking game plan, but wonder if it is suitable to a team that does not really have high quality kickers playing.

I am glad we got the bonus point, we need to ensure we keep picking them up when we lose to try to maintain our spot on the table from dropping too much.

Thorn couldn't coach a game plan's asshole. Seriously.

Excessively stated but maybe there is something in it. There are complaints about Lawson and his play, his kicking. Guarantee he is expressly following orders. There is something in this this kicking battle, working not just from Lawson, but Tate, Grealy, Jock, hell even Daugunu.

I did not have an issue with the kicking game plan, but wonder if it is suitable to a team that does not really have high quality kickers playing.

Something though that is interesting, kicks from hand were not major lopsided between the two teams. So to an extent the Red kicks were simply not going to cop conceding early to a Chief kick/territory advantage. And the result? Red territory 33%. I thought our kickers are OK but the stats aren't backing it up.

And that brings us back to the game plan. If there was something in the game plan, more than kicking, could someone fill me in? I get that we are missing JOC (James O'Connor) but does that really leave the team completely bereft of creativity?

Again, like last week, I think Creighton was pretty damn decent. A few mistakes but not unexpected when a Flyhalf his making his 2nd start.

He wasn’t supported, however, but Campbell and Paisami again. Neither of whom are proving the attacking threat needed. And Daugunu is a shadow of his former attacking self. If those three, or even 2 of them, play to their true abilities then we win the match. Even without JOC (James O'Connor).

I understand the field position thing, but it was so telegraphed. The second the reds got the ball for periods of the game they just kicked, didn’t even look like keeping it in hand. Made it easy for the chiefs to defend. And as others have mentioned Creighton is only starting his pro career. He can’t be expected to be a great game manager at this stage, even in SRAu. His pick up and grubber where mcreight almost scored was great play and reading of the situation.

I thought Creighton looked a lot more assured this week and made some nice passes - seemed to be setting up well. He is looking good for the future. Tate was ridiculous around the scrum, not sure if he has been told to try to get in the way of the opposing 9 or decided it himself, seemed very odd.

No difference between that and Ross angling massively to open up the blind. Both know what they are doing is only wrong if they get caught.
Understand that TSR, but he was caught and penalised twice and then seemed to ask AR what he was doing wrong?

Quiet please, this narrative fails to subscribe to the heroic and brave and innocent Reds groupthink on display in this thread.

**FINAL WARNING**

FFS the kiwi ref gave the Reds a try when the bloke clearly dropped the ball over the line, what more do you want?

"Mummy, mummy, it's the kiwi ref's fault our scrum is getting mangled".

"Mummy, mummy, the stupid biased kiwi ref made our dopey drongo players kick the ball away for the whole game".
That was quite interesting that try, as it looked to me he took ball of McReight who was behind him, and he was on knees when he did it, but they didn't go back that far on replay. Wasn't too worried, thats just what happens in games.

Yep mate, I was surprised he was standing alongside the Chiefs 6 before ball was even fed into scrum, was most interesting because once ball is back in play ie the scrum, he then off side as he in front of ball.

Two things. Creightons kicking and Pickerills refereeing. The worst.
It was mind boggling that two teams, with players who are not good at long range kicking, go into a kick off. Then, every time we get our hands on the ball we kick it straight back to them (usually landing in their hands). I’m all for a good kick off, but you only do this with purpose and know that you’re going to come off with better field position.

I think we were watching different games or have different expectations. How can you accept this as the new level of rookie flyhalf? I’m not even sure this is acceptable for Prems. For god sakes, bring in Lynagh now if we are going to accept this.

Scrum penalties were frustrating last night, but let’s be honest, the Reds haven’t had any loose head prop really take the position and make it their own.

Both Hoopert and Zander are just as likely to be sent back to clubland and get worked over by a 1st grade tighthead. In saying that, I don’t think there are any stand out players to replace either of them.

On the positive, I think we’ve seen Blyth & Smith really come along as a locking pair. They are very old school in that their job relies almost entirely on doing the dirt work, but they are doing it well. 19 tackles, 1 miss & 2 runs for Blyth + 18 tackles, 1 miss, 8 runs for Smith.

Hoopert & Asiata also very good stats wise with 17/0/5 & 18/0/2 respectively. However Hoopert in particular seemed to struggle with Ta’avao’s tactics last night & Asiata missed a couple of throws. Again I reflect on the fact that in the trans Tasman games last year our tackling accuracy dropped considerably, whereas this year it remains generally very high (although Hamish Stewart did blot his copy book this week with 14/1).

It seems to me we are trying to play a style based on absorbing pressure and scoring on turnover, but we are just missing accuracy in our attack. A couple of missing personal would help, but personally I don’t think we can blame the losses on the injury toll as both last week and this week we had plenty of opportunity to win.

Our misfiring lineout does really frustrate me as, to me, we have no good reason not to have a very strong lineout and it has been a problem for years. I reckon we would have won another dozen games over the years if our lineout performed to the standard it should.

Discipline still an issue - but I do think for the second week McReight was at least unlucky. He seemed to me to be have got two legitimate steals and was pinned for not supporting his body weight. I haven’t watched the reply but, IMO, if those weren’t supporting his body weight then there are a million others let go in games far, far worse - but anyhow.

Frustrating - and I will admit not the least because I know I’m going to read another river of posts this week on how Super Rugby sucks and we just lose to the Kiwis. But there is only one way to turn that around and, at the moment, we are coming up short.

I assume he asked the AR why he let the opposition half man handle him like that.

And I assume the AR said something along the lines of ‘well, don’t get offside and he won’t have to’.

Not sure what the ARs response would have been though to Fotuaika if he asked him ‘hey - why did you just let Ross walk around the corner like it was a Merry-go-round’ :)
