The Way I see it going into Grand Finals

2014 COLTS FINALS SERIES VENUES
Match A - 1 v 6 ( Uni V East )
Match B – 3 v 4 ( Souths V Norths )
Match C – 2 v 5 ( Randwick V Manly )
Match D – Q1 v Q4 ( Uni V Souths )
Match E – Q2 v Q3 (Randwick V Norths )
Grand Final – ( Uni V Norths )

I can't see anything other than a Randwick vs Uni grand final, both are the inform teams of the season.

If I'd have to back either one I'd have to back Randwick

Anyone know how Norths Colts 1 Locks went?
I see they got pounded by 30 points by the Wicks - just keen to hear how the NRC player Croke went.
Hanigan & Kennedy completely dominated the encounter. I have to confess that I wasn't watching Croker. The Wicks pack, led by ODonahue, was awesome and the talented backs had a field day.

^^^^ I'll do the summary later today when all the score sheets are published on the web site.

Uni, Norths, 2 Blues, & Gordon score sheets are not in yet.

Financial Assistance/Scholarships/Player Recruitment Strategies

What is a fair and equitable level of scholarships at clubs?
This season, the Wicks beat all comers to the prime cattle of the Aust Schoolboys 2013, signing up 6 of them.

It seems, that Uni have a whole variety of scholarships and arrangements through their elite athletes programme, and other third party deals with residential colleges etc.
Meanwhile most of the other "progressive" clubs have followed suit in some way, with between 5 and 7 "scholarships" seeming to be the norm, with these "scholarships" being about $3000-$5000 value (most in contra).

Has the Arms Race just been ratcheted up a notch with this announcement from the Wicks?
http://randwickrugby.com.au/news/2014-news/4158-rdrufc-luncheon-28-august

• In 2013 we had 7 scholarships available to our players.
• In 2014 this has expanded to 34 with a view to being 45 – 50 in 2015.
• We support all levels of study - both tertiary and TAFE, trade and skills.
• Residential colleges are a key pillar of our recruitment and retention

A perfect storm down in Brook Street with the mix of influences and approaches from Sydney Uni (Nick Ryan) and Scots College (Wade Kelly).

Can the other clubs (we know Uni can) compete with attracting and retaining talent, when the Wicks are looking to buy in up to 50 players next year (up to 15 more than this years harvest)?

How many of these lads being targeted will be from the wrong side of Anzac Parade, with no previous history of association with Randwick via the Juniors or the "local" High Schools?

What hope is there for Two Blues and Emus to compete?
2015 will see the 2 Blues lose the majority of the extraordinary Oakhill 2012 graduates as they move up to grade. One hopes that the momentum generated over the past two years, lead by the Oakhill influence, is maintained.

That is the problem. The player points system isn't working entirely as intended, but it is a step in the right direction.

Along with the usual stats about who has scored what etc, each week, the player points have been captured in the Jarse-o-meter, ready for some analysis.

If the system was working correctly there would be a reasonable co-relation between player points and scoreboard points across a season, allowing for the odd upset victory where a champion team may have things go their way and they beat a team of champions.

There hasn't been. Notwithstanding that many clubs still appear to have applied incorrect player points to some of their players (probably laziness more than deliberate intent to cheat and deceive), Teams with similar player points to their opponents have put massive scores on their opponents on many occasions throughout the season.

Some Cases in point Hobbits Colts 1 = 23 Player points played Gordon Colts 1 = 22 player points. Final Score 40 to 10 to Hobbits. Hobbits v Parramatta. Score was 71-14 to the Hobbits despite the 2Blues having 27 player points up against 23 for the Shoeless Ones.

Beasts in Round 1 had 28 Player points (no rock stars) against 32 Player points from the Wicks (2 Aust Schoolboys, 1 Aust A, 4 players from 2012 NSW State team) Final Score was 28-14 to the Beasties.

Penrith is generally putting mid 20's Player points on the field. Not much correlation between player points differences and the scoreboard for the poor Emus.

I don't have the solution, but can say that the current player points system doesn't appear to be working all that well.

If Randwick have 35 players on scholarships then unless some come off these they can offer about 10 more next season.
