Sad reality is many clubs struggle to get 50% payment.

50% of players putting full fees in would be some kind of luxury at our club, historically. :(

My first aim as President is to get that number to 100% by Round 6. The first marker is all players get their $100 deposit down on the day they sign up.

Did some figures on these fees for our club at 3 Grades:

Affiliation fee: $650
Per Grade: $2000 insurance + $550 entry + $775 gold plating = $3325

$10,625.

Committee meeting tonight we planned on fees of $220, which have got to be about the lowest in the comp - still need 49 players to break even, and that is without considering kit costs.

Final figures per team to cover costs including socks + shorts + training shirt + polo:

20 per grade = $260
25 per grade = $225
30 per grade = $200

If I can get 60 fully paid players I reckon $230 isn't a stretch, and we'll just wear the difference.

Out of interest: what does everyone else pay in registration, and how is your payment rate?

Out of interest, do you guys have a junior club attached?

(hope this is not too off topic :))

We do - of a sort. Start U6 and U7 a couple of years ago. Looking to make U9 but suffering for lack of funding, volunteers and recruits. Probably need to sink a bit more money into it, that I don't have.

And found out tonight one of my best front row prospects has gone to another club :(

That's never good news, no one can afford to lose props

Too true.

In the spirit of trying to find a solution where NSW Rugby couldn't give a toss, does anyone know if somebody...anybody does front row clinics?

Most guys playing Subbies love their club, love rugby and will help out where they can. Surely if more players knew how to play prop or hooker (let's be honest there are enough hookers) we would have less problems with numbers.

I don't blame players unskilled in the dark arts for not stepping up, it's dangerous for the untrained. However there are enough larger gentlemen running around with a 6, 7, 8, 12 & 13 on their backs who could step if they just knew what they were doing. Especially in the lower grades. I've actually seen a few 9's capable of slotting in if required.....I LOVE SUBBIES

With what little money they have it surely wouldn't be too hard to run clinics teaching people the basics of the most quintessential of rugby positions.

There is also the matter of coaches being trained properly in the entire Tight Five basics. I just don't think its covered adequately in SmartRugby - and this is Australia so that's hardly a surprise.

I've met some props and second rows from other clubs who can't bind properly. That's the most basic skill of all.

There is no recognised pathway or resources to develop set piece coaches in Australia. Outside the professional ranks there are no available clinics and there is so little out there to help develop coaching skills and provision of techniques for scrummaging.

I've dabbled in it and given up pretty quickly. You need a lot of time with a group to correctly develop a scrum. There are small differences between teams which have to be accounted for and worked with. The Rugby Site and the videos and articles by Mike Cron are pretty useful from an academic perspective but are hard to transfer to the amateur arena.

As an aside there is probably a business case for someone putting together a group of scrum specialists and farming themselves out to various teams.

Anyone know the story with Oatley?

Noticed they're not on the Div 3 draw so assume they're in Div 4. Seems odd as they did have a colts team that won Radford Cup last year didn't they?

Wow big movements in the clubs listed in each division. As expected BOBs and Newport ended up in Div 3. Well done to Beecroft in turning it around so quickly. It will be interesting to see how both HAC and Crofties go with putting a colts team on the park.

I wonder with Kings and Oatley not being listed in Div 3 whether they are looking at restarting Div 5?

Its not just for clubs hitting hard times either - Div 5 needs to happen in order to prevent Div 6 growing.

I'm all for having an entry competition in place, but there are many clubs who have shown no desire to grow past 1 Grade. And that's OK because not everyone can, but a 16-team bottom Division when there are clubs struggling to put 3 Grades on the park is not a healthy look.

Same issue as the absence of Division 4 a few years back; getting clubs to fit is tough after a few years.

Agreed. Look at the northern beaches, you have Wakehurst, Dee Why, Terry Hills and Collaroy basically surrounding clubs like Forest and Newport. In these areas you just don't have the population density to support that many clubs and something will eventually give. This area also supplies two shute shield clubs with grade and colts teams. Both of which struggled to fill colts teams last year.

They finished 2nd last in Club Champs so they were relegated to Div 4. All clubs were told before the start of the season that the bottom 2 would be relegated to facilitate a return to an 8 team format.

Think they are investigating the Illawarra comp as Oatley have a good Colts side that they wish to maintain.

Not necessarily, on the m5 you'd be at Campbelltown and Camden in fairly quick time.
