Sydney Subbies 2022

Good AGM. Just the right balance of annual report versus party pies. Pfitzy got amongst it, don't you worry.

Highlight for us were the Reneladies' mention on p11 of the Annual Report for their Subbies 7s win. Not much glory for the blokes but we'll do our best to turn that around next year ;)

Me too ;) bit slow this time of year, tho maybe it feels that way because we started way earlier than usual. I'm sure February will see a good roll up and we're hitting the socials hard to generate some interest.

Got a few bites on players but not much on coaching - speaking to a few clubs that isn't unique.

I see its 8 teams in the top 3 Divisions

Div 1
Colleagues
Waverley
Hunters Hill
Mosman
St Pats
Forest
Blue Mountains
Petersham/Newport

Div 2
Newport/Petersham
UNSW
Hawkessbury Valley
Lindfield
Hills
Drummoyne

Then it gets difficult. 2 off the below.

Harlequinns
Beecroft
Epping
Briars
Knox

Can see how they then have enough left for 8 teams in Div 3?

Quinns and Epping (big jump) to Div 2?

@Pfitzy got enough for DIV 3?

Can Barker field the teams? Iggies surely can get teams together. Quality is a different question but team wise they usually can.

After that would Manly Savers & Sydney Harbour be able?

Talking about Div 3 here

To get 3 x 8 you need 24 clubs, ideally.

Last year Div 1 had 10 while Div 2/3 had 11 so you're already short on pure mathematics at 21.

Generally you want a minimum of 6 in a division so absolute bare bones is 18 but I think there are enough to get 8 in Div 1, so that makes 20 minimum.

Looking at results from last year I'm not sure Blacktown stay in the list of 21.

Really need to consider all three divisions to ensure clubs don't suffer, and again: no easy decisions there.

I can say for a fact the Board have been talking to many clubs and are trying to get the best outcome possible. Anyone at the AGM last night would have heard the same.

Hearing some rumours of big issues under the Gladesville bridge, anyone able to put some context to this?
Have the Dirty Reds, the once powerhouses of division 1 continued to spiral?
Only time will tell.
Always enjoy references to places in the vague locale of a club to spruce up a post. We should start a reference list.

FWIW - I think the men from Lyons Rd will steady the ship in 23 without being serious premiership threats.

This is what I have in terms of the divisions. Unsure on the amount of grades in div 3, I thought a combined div 2 4th grade and div 3 3rd grade comp could work but I’m not sure if it is viable.

1 - 5 grades + colts

I’d say Barker and potentially Knox will stay/end up in Div 2 just based off there results over the last few years. Knox colts were the highlight in a dismal year which will hopefully set them up for them. They may not have the numbers for all the teams but probably end up as the best fit.
I can’t see Harbour making the jump to Div 3 either unless they have some more help from Easts, incredibly strong but don’t have the player depth on there own. Unfortunately I’m not sure where Blacktown will end up.

Merrylands??? Great year last year might be an option
Redfield/Raptors?? Would they have the numbers for the extra grades and colts

Whatever the breakup of the division’s let’s hope 2023 brings less forfeits and clubs are able to get the full quota on the park. It was a very frustrating year coming up unevenly matched sides

I wonder if they’d look at
Div 1-8 Teams (Colleagues, Hunters, Mosman, Waverly, Drummoyne, Mountains, St Pats & Forrest)
Div 2- 7 Teams (Newport, Petersham, Lindfield, UNSW, Hills, Valley & Knox)
Div 3- 7 Teams (Old Barker, Briars, Beecroft, Iggies, Harlequins, Epping & Savers)

Which would give you an 8 team Div 4 (Harbour, Redfield , Merrylands, Mac Uni, Chatswood, Renegades, Raptors & Saints)

No one likes having the Bye but that looks to be the simplest way to fit like teams together.
Put it to the board Pfitzy!

Won’t be Epping, I’d guess they’ll have a Beecroft, Harlequins, Briars, Knox in that order

Don't worry, the Board is looking at every number. Footage from the last Board meeting:

:)

Will the final decisions make absolutely everyone happy? No :(
Will it still result in the peanut gallery saying the Board is out of touch and should all be drawn and quartered? Oh definitely ;)
Will *any* of said peanut gallery actually try to help solve the problems at Union or Club level? Fat chance based on recent history

8 is the goal, but in some cases other numbers will need to be considered simply based on the info we get.

6 is the bare minimum, but you have to play each other three times creating an obvious bias (particularly if you play a tough club away), and a bit of inequity in home v away games. Also, if one club starts experiencing difficulty the whole division is in strife...

7 works a bit better than 6 because it is still full home and away with 1 bye. And while byes suck, at least it is a known quantity and some players even like it to take a break (personally I hate a bye up against a long weekend or wet weather weekend, but such is life).

As I've said here before: when presented with information offered, the Board has to make the decision that looks best for the whole Union, based on that information.

And by "whole Union" I mean trying to get the Division numbers right for a workable draw, but also trying to get like-sized clubs with similar strengths together to make it competitive rather than one-sided. There will be dominant clubs, but if it is a slaughter every week for a particular bunch of chaps that isn't going to be much fun.

The Board (via the CCR) has talked to many clubs over the last couple of months, to ensure lines of communication are open and that information flows both ways.

If you read the Annual Report https://rugby.net.au/news/2022-Annual-Report-x-15822.html you'll also see there is a drop in teams and player numbers (p6) which needs to be arrested and the Board can't do that on its own.

If you've got ties to a club, then I'd urge you to get involved and help them out, because this is a whole-of-Rugby thing.

Without more volunteers, players, managers, and coaches, there is going to be some serious challenges in arresting the downturn.

And if you DON'T have ties with a club, find one nearby and offer some help a couple of hours a week.

Great way to make mates for life and give yourself something to do of a Saturday.

We're in Kellyville ;)

I reckon this is the fairest outcome for most clubs. I have no issue with a bye as long as it keeps the division competitive.
