Sydney Subbies 2024

With trials likely cancelled for all clubs is anyone brave enough to offer their early round 1 predictions?

I'll have a crack at Div 4 :)

Renegades v Hornsby - don't really know what to make of the new guys, but coming back from Central Coast comp I reckon they'll be pretty good. We had one trial game nearly a month ago and not a lot else, as well as a bit of turnover in personnel, so I'll tip the away side.

Chatswood v Kings - could be a very good game. Both young and fit teams with a few years together. Ed Craig running around for the Stags will be the Old Man of the crowd ;)

Raptors v Canterbury - I saw both teams run around a couple of weeks ago, and reckon Raptors are going to have some serious firepower on the field. Canterbury were good value against Blacktown but the quality of the games was very different.

Wakehurst v Redfield - think the ROBRs boys will have too much for Wakehurst, but their longevity in the comp might be tested after a couple of retirements.

Div 2

Petersham vs St Pats - Two clubs who pushed the wagon hard to stay in Div 1, will be interesting to see how the playing groups have responded to being demoted. Sounds like Pats have been patchy in pre-season form, while Petersham have performed strongly by most accounts. Petersham by 10.

Epping vs Briars - For all the reports of serious player numbers problems we've had a habit of pulling it together. Not sure about this time though, really depends of whether the Briars 7s guys are also playing the 15s. Briars by 7.

Beecroft vs Newport - the mullet showdown is back. Both sides with strong backlines and can score plenty if their forwards can hold their end of things together. Rumours are that much of the 2022 Barraclough premiers squad is back together. Newport by 15.

UNSW vs Hills - Usually a good game this one. Bit of turnover at Hills apparently, seems to be for the better so far, despite the apparent issues about colts. UNSW been there or thereabouts for a few years now, maybe this is their year. UNSW by 5.

One of the boys at our club reckons that there was an emergency board meeting on Friday - a Zoom call? And that there was a meeting on Wednesday as well.

Anyone know what this was about? Given the draws are done for Divisions 1-4, is it a problem with Division 5?

Still two weeks for us, but we've wrapped up our pre-season trials. From what we've been told, coaches are happy with where we are at. Looking ready to rip in come April 20 and have a crack at the Kentwell in 2024!

Epping down and apparently Knox up. 2 teams and a colts so no 3rd grade from them.

Subbies have a lot of questions to answer. Less than a week out from Round 1 and clubs still in the dark. Hard to organise a Halligan Cup game if you don't know how many grades your opposition has.

From someone who is involved in a Division 2 club, we have not heard anything of Hills or Epping not fielding a colts side. Neither has it been mentioned that Knox will be in their place. I don't particularly care if its Knox, Epping or a reformed Balmain, as long as they get the teams on the park!

We know you've lived the charmed life in Div 1 the last few years, but you'll learn to love the uncertainty.

If you look at the draws for Division 1, it looks like everyone is set for four grades and colts. The Sutherland Cup draw is up, but no times for games. Anyone know why?
Division 2 draw looks like four grades and colts for everyone as well.
Division 3 all clubs look set for two grades, but colts is a mixture of different clubs.

Good luck to everyone starting this week.

Can anyone make sense of this?
Colts teams Chatswood (Div 4), Brothers (??), Mac Uni (Div 5), Wakehurst (Div 4).
Div 3 1st Grade.

Not every club in Div 3 has Colts, leaving gaps. Some clubs in Div 4 have Colts, and can help fill that gap.
Encourage Chatswood and Wakehurst to move up to Div 3 and move two without colts to div 4?
Is grade level that different for Div 3 & 4?

I knew you'd ask that :) and the short answer is "yes", at least for those two clubs. From Div 4 last year:

- Irish and Merrylands dominant. Had to be promoted. Questions over Colts, yes, but they both wanted it and we knew we had solutions for filling gaps, even if the exact solution wasn't crystal clear at that point.
- Rockdale also good but relegated at their request based on playing numbers.
- Wakehurst did OK, mostly beating teams below them. However they had concerns about their Grade sides in terms of strength and depth - they'd been bolstered by Brothers in 2023 and still had to forfeit a Grose Cup game at home.
- Chatswood didn't win a game in McClean Cup, and 6 from 14 in Grose Cup. Forfeited 1 First Grade game and 3 second Grade games. Did not want 3rd Div.
