Sydney Subbies 2025

How long do Subbies leave it before cancelling a round? The rain today has already been heavy and is meant to continue until Friday/Saturday. Surely most clubs are in regular enough contact with their Council to have a pretty good idea by Wednesday whether the field will be open or not come Saturday.

Feel sorry for the Presidents/Secretaries/Committees/Volunteers that need to deal with this again and are stressing about getting games on in an almost impossible situation.

Also how many clubs have had a proper training session in the past few weeks? Can be a bit dicey throwing underprepared players on the field in miserable conditions.

Is there a way to do a co-ordinated approach with wet weather? Maybe a communal list of the types of available grounds and there locations/councils?

I wouldn’t have had a clue there was a synthetic ground where UNSW & Shammies played or near Pfitzy till he mentioned it.
Are clubs just relying on local knowledge and then making a late call Friday afternoon to council to book it? Or just searching Google Maps for fields?
I know if my ground is closed Friday afternoon, I’m not getting anyone from Council to take my call late Friday.

Hwavy D where do you think Newport want to be next year? Is the slog of Div 1 too much? Or has it been a Tough year with injuries etc? Would you prefer Div 2 with less demand on numbers?
Your colts are killing it this year so that may boost you next year?
If Newport want to stay I’d give them another year. Tough on Lindfield who have run 5 grades and colts all year

How good are the Wallabies!! First time in the office hearing everyone talking about rugby.

Decision will be out of Newport's hands i suspect but ultimately if their is a decision to be made it will be a collective decison made by committee, coaches and players.

As I have mentioned before the challenge in moving to Div 1 is retaining the players that got your there. Retirements were massive with other leakage to Shute Shield and $$ at local league comp by some key players.

Div 1 Updates
Waverley continue to put some misery into Newport. How does a 3rd grade game end up 97-0 in Div 1?
Drummoyne keep putting up a fight but couldnt match it in the end with Mountains
Mosman destroyed a very disappointing Colleagues, who are now done for the season despite being vocal about their recruitment pre season
HH managed to win with 13 against Lindfield. HH even benched half their starting side, Not sure how Lindfield couldn't finish the job against a weakened outfit, might be time for trip back to Div 2?

Newport haven't played at home since round 9 which was 12th of June with its last two home games transferred elsewhere. The fact they were able to get enough bodies out of the injury ravaged group to travel 1.5hrs to Maroubra in my opinion is actually a credit to the club and players considering our travel track record. Newport met its obligations and didn't forefeit, something that Waverley failed to achieve with its inability to gets a colts team on the park.

Have had a couple of enquires about the Field of Dreams. Unfortunately after the flogging it has copped recently access has been restricted - particularly as the clubs enquiring aren't within the precinct and Eels need to keep a ground on standby in case the main fields are also waterlogged.

There are a few plastic fields in our area but bookings are at a premium.

Junior parents in local clubs across sports are enquiring about getting their money back.

Councils aren't in the habit of refunding ground hire fees so not sure that can happen.

Reading under 11. ABANDONMENT OF MATCH

If the instruction is that the game is not to be replayed, it would be an unusual situation. In such unusual situations I don't know if any deductions would apply. This is effectively the catch-all if we're talking about a brawl breaking out as indicated earlier in this thread:

11.3 There are 2 exceptions to rule 11.2:
(a) In the case of 11.1(c), when disruption to a match has been deemed to have been caused by actions contrary to the Union’s Competition and Playing Rules by one team or the other, or both, or by their officials and supporters, in which case the Union shall refer the matter to its Judiciary Committee for consideration and any necessary action.

and

11.4 An abandoned match shall be replayed at a future time and place as agreed by both teams. If no agreement is reached, the match shall be replayed at a time and place designated by the Union. Should either team elect not to replay the match, the other team shall win on forfeit.

I assume that was due to Oatley running out of numbers? Must have minimum 11 on the park or you forfeit under 9. FORFEITS

9.5 A minimum of 11 players is needed to constitute a team for NSWSRU competition matches. Any team unable to field 11 players within ten minutes of the official kick-off time, or at any stage during the match, for whatever reason, including temporary suspensions or send-offs, shall forfeit the match without right of appeal. Teams playing against an opposition with less than 15 players are not required to match opposition team numbers.

This looks like a 28-0 result on the website but the app still has 26-0 for some reason. I suspect because the app submitted scores but it was manually update

In terms of penalties refer to 9.4

9.4 Any club which forfeits two or more competition matches in a grade (except Sutherland and Halligan Cups) shall be called to appear before, or give a written submission to the Clubs, Competition and Rules Sub-Committee at a time notified by the NSWSRU. The Sub-Committee may recommend to the Board appropriate action be taken in the form of a fine, suspension, or withdrawal from the competition, or additional loss of competition and/or club championship points.

Instructions for replaying matches in wet weather circumstances are under 10. GROUNDS UNFIT FOR PLAY

10.1.6 Should either club already have a deferred match scheduled for the next proximate wet weather weekend (or if there are no wet weather weekends remaining) and another match needs to be rescheduled then this match will be played within 15 days after it was originally scheduled unless otherwise decided by the Executive Director. Should any last round matches be deferred then these must be played prior to the semi finals.
so there is no rule against them playing Friday and backing up the day after? I would think there would be minimum notice required for a club in finals?

The need to facilitate eligibility checks prior to finals and a very angry Tim Richards would stop this from happening.
Usually finals eligibility needs to be submitted by Tuesday to give time for it all to be checked off.
So normally I’d say games would have to be done by Wednesday the week before at the latest but as Pfitzy said unprecedented times….
