Question for you

I recall reading somewhere that this will be Uni's last year playing games on Uni No.1 as the newly redeveloped No2 ground will be rectangular and will have much better facilities.

Just wondering if this is correct?:)

From the Shute Shield 2013 thread archives:

The hope is that by mid-2014 No. 2 Oval will be transformed into a rectangular field with grandstand and function room each more than twice the size of what is now on No. 1. There will also be a large state-of-the-art athletes-only gymnasium under the grandstand.

Colts will probably still play at Paul's, as No.2 will have to accommodate not just Grade Rugby but also Men's and Women's Soccer.
.

I've been verballed. The new development at Uni No.2 will not "be shared with all sports". I think we have 47 sporting clubs at Sydney Uni.

The new field should have a top class turf surface basically used for just rugby and soccer - men's and women's - except that there will probably be drop-in wickets enabling it to be used for cricket in summer.
.

The project may be a little behind the schedule proposed in 2013 when @Bruce Ross posted the above.
The DA may have taken some time to get approved.

No 1 Oval surface did not look very good yesterday, and the clay cricket pitch makes the oval awfully sticky and slippery when wet, and dangerous when baked hard.

Thanks HJ, I knew I read it somewhere. I went onto the SU website and the facilities that will be on offer there look/sound very impressive.

EDIT: Now that you mention it, I haven't seen Bruce posting on G&GR lately.

Uni defeats Rebels in clean sweep of wins

ImageProxy.mvc

By Bruce 'China' Lin
Map reference 432 E 15 may be unfamiliar to the average Sydneysider. But the rugby fraternity will immediately recognise this to be Forshaw Park - Southern Districts fortress. A visa is almost required when venturing into The Shire, Gods Country or for those outside of post code 2232.…Middle Earth!
The Students came away with a valuable win in first grade by 40-24. This was a game where the colour yellow was brought out of the referees pocket on more than one occasion with some misdemeanours displayed by personnel from both teams.
The early stages of the first half was a penalty duel between South’s five eighth Volavola and University’s second rower Byron Hodge. Hodge was able to squeeze 6 points after 12 minutes of the half before returning halfback Jake Gordon took advantage of a Rebels mistake.
The Rebels backs were attacking towards the southern end when a wayward no look pass was thrown over a shoulder. The ball was gleefully received by Gordon who darted through a gap. Gordon dashed downfield in a 45 metre run being pursued by the desperate South’s cover defence before scoring. The conversion was unsuccessful but University were in double figures by 11-3. Hodge’s kicking prowess came to the fore again with two further penalties.
University were growing in confidence and the backline were commencing to throw the ball about. Five eighth Stuart Dunbar was getting the backline moving for centres the two Jim’s - McMahon & Stewart to cut inroads into South’s territory. University worked for field position inside the South’s quarter and shifted the ball quickly to the right after a line out. Winger big Mark O’Dare received the final pass to gallop over in the corner to increase the University lead to 24-3 at half time.
University brings out the colourful crowds at Sydney rugby grounds and Forshaw Park was no exception. A ladies day was in full swing along the western corner and there was bling everywhere! Off duty Police Sergeant Cheryl and her friend Kerrie were taking in the atmosphere while under the marquee a new reality show The Real Housewives of Lilli Pilli was being filmed.
ImageProxy.mvc

However the marquee acoustics made the vocalists singers lyrics incoherent. If only we could hear those tunes from yesteryear such as Englebert Humperdinck’s - Quando,Quando,Quando or Wayne Newton’s classic tearjerker Danke Schoen.
Stung by their flat first half display, South’s drew first blood in the second half. Attacking inside the University 22 metre area. The Rebels were rucking and mauling towards the Students tryline. Exploiting a loosely marked University ruck, halfback Roos dummied and darted to the side of a ruck to score a converted try for a 27-10 scoreline.
A long range penalty shot from Hodge increased University’s lead to 30-10. University continued to attack and in his best performance to date, whippet like fullback Jack Macklin scored next. Toeing through a loose South’s ball, Macklin ran shoulder to shoulder with a pod of South’ defenders. Receiving one of those lucky ball bounces Macklin scooted away to score. Scores were 37-10 but South’s mounted a mini comeback with two quick tries whilst University had a player sin binned. Hodge’s radar like boot increased the score to 40-24 before the referee blew the final whistle.
A solid win by University but with substantial improvement still to come.
In another first for the University club, across the Tasman the Waratahs recorded a 29-24 victory over the previously unbeaten Hurricanes. All points were scored by University players!

Students victors in 1st Grade clash at North Sydney on ANZAC Day

ImageProxy.mvc

By Bruce 'China' Lin
Last Saturday was one of Australia’s most historically significant days. The spirit of the 100th Anniversary of the Gallipoli landing pervaded North Sydney Oval as Sydney University defeated Northern Suburbs 31-20 on ANZAC Day.
Running towards the Moreton Bay fig tree in the first half, University continued their attacking play from last week.
Half back Jake Gordon was the first point scorer for the Students with his third minute try. Inside the Norths five metre area, University were back pedalling the North’s forward pack. Second rower Liam Winton was securing the ball through the lineouts while David Hickey as Captain was working his bully beef tough forwards in cohesion.
ImageProxy.mvc

University packed a five metre scrum. Instead of driving over, Gordon took advantage of a loosely marked open side and scooped the ball to pierce through to score near the posts. Second rower Byron Hodge converted and slotted another penalty soon after for a 10-0 lead.
University were pressuring Norths at every opportunity. Left winger Henry Clunies-Ross took advantage of the blindside. Receiving a pass down a narrow corridor 20 metres out, Clunies- Ross showed great dexterity. There was a dance and tip toe down the western touchline finished off with a dive into the corner post with a stack of defenders on top of him. The flying hyphen bounced back to his feet with a smile to celebrate the awarding of a try.
Scores were 17-3 but the Students could not rest at all. That period before half time to demoralise an opposition was available for University. Pick and drive continuity was executed by the Students close to the North’s tryline. The fruits of their labour came when University’s agent 007 Whiteley…Mitchell Whiteley scored. Number 8 Whiteley received the final ball to score near the uprights on the half time bell to the applause of female supporters perched high in the stands. Norths had two penalties under their belts but Hodge’s conversion made scores 24-6 and a bonus point was on offer for the second half!
ImageProxy.mvc

Over the past two weeks University have been playing before Ladies Day’s which is always a great spectacle at grounds. This week sadly there was no extravaganza as M.C.’s were unavailable. Kim Kardashian at a Paris fashion show, Ricky Martin New York concert, Kim Jong un swimming across the Pacific Ocean.
The second half for University was not at the same intensity levels as the first. North’s fought back with two quick tries through an interception and a penalty try for the Students collapsing a rolling maul. Scores were 24-20 to University and a comeback was being staged.
University had the dominant scrum during the game and their superior eight proved the decider. Camping themselves on the Norths 5 metre line, University set a series of scrums. Successive penalties and re packing of the scrum ultimately gave University a penalty try for a final score of 31-20 and the bonus point.
University are improving by the week and a tough test will be at University Oval No.1 next week against their traditional rivals Randwick for Saturday Night Football.

Round 8 Review - Victory for Eastwood in a close battle with Students at T.G. Millner

ImageProxy.mvc

By Bruce 'China' Lin
If the recent Mayweather Pacquiao bout was billed as the ultimate battle then Sydney University and Eastwood games ranks up there also . Last Saturday’s fixture at the T.G. Millner Field saw a seesawing scoreline which would puzzle a Newtown clairvoyant. University had a narrow loss of 34-29 but the result could have gone to the Students with an ounce of luck.
The early University tactic was to throw the ball which paid dividends. In the second minute repeated recycling allowed University to camp themselves inside the Eastwood 22 metre area. The pressure of University’s attack saw breakaway and captain David Hickey explode onto a ball splitting the defence to plant the ball near the posts for an easy conversion.
University maintained this successful formula when another attacking phase was mounted inside the Eastwood quarter following the kickoff. A penalty to University five metres out from the Eastwood line was exploited by the returning University centre that wily old fox - Tom Carter. Carter hoodwinked the defence by taking a quick tap and burrow over the line to score.
A 14 point lead is a handy buffer in any game but against the wounded Woods it makes them more determined to hit back. This came to fruition when Eastwood were able to attack inside the Students 22 metre area. With an open side thin on defence Eastwood channelled the ball to the right allowing their winger Shorter to score in the corner.
The action was looking promising for the Students after securing the ball after the kickoff. That was until an unfortunate intercept by Eastwood fullback Batger after a promising University buildup. It felt like forgetting to buy a mothers day present with this length of the field try. Scores were 14-12 still favouring the Students but Eastwood were acquiring that valuable commodity momentum. Attacking down the club house channel saw big winger John Grant back up to score in the corner.
ImageProxy.mvc

The game was being played at an incredible pace and any luck would be savoured. When University second rower Liam Winton crashed over for what appeared to be a legitimate try being disallowed, the colossus adonis Winton dusted himself off the ground bewildered that his effort was all in vain.
University’s dynamic Hickey leading by example reversed the scoreline once again. Running off a short ball , Hickey once again fractured the Eastwood defence and dash away for his second five pointer. At 21-19 to the Students, the game was a great spectacle for Sydney club rugby.
A Batger penalty on the eve of halftime saw the scoreline revert to Eastwood at 22-21. Both sides earned a rehydration ready to lock horns again for the second half.

The excellent conditions were a welcome respite from the previous weeks of torrential rain. There was a healthy crowd perched on the grass banks and stands. Only the appearance of H.R.H. Prince Harry with an Australian fiancée could supplant the crowds focus on this magic Sydney afternoon.
Byron Hodge commenced the second half with an early long range penalty. But again Eastwood countered with their halfback Snowden backing up for a try under the posts. Eastwood commenced to exploit the left hand flank of the Students and two further Eastwood tries were quickly scored.
ImageProxy.mvc

34-24 was now favoured Eastwood and University had 10 minutes left on the clock to make amends. Gambles had to be taken. University’s attack was pounding the Eastwood tryline. But it was left to a deft diagonal kick by University five eighth Stuart Dunbar into the in goal area that brought home a try through winger Mark O’Dare.
The last minutes of the match showed exhaustion levels reach extreme by both teams as everything was thrown at each other. Unfortunately time ran out and Eastwood prevailed at 34-29. An agonising defeat but a classic rugby battle between two respected rivals.

Round 9 Review - Strong Wests start proves too much for Sydney Uni

ImageProxy.mvc

By Bruce 'China' Lin
A stiff breeze coming off Parramatta Road was capitalised by West Harbour last Saturday at Concord Oval. The Pirates 23-17 victory was built on the back of their first half momentum and University playing catchup for the entire game.
Three minutes had only elapsed when Wests applied pressure with a five metre lineout. University were unable to counter the massive surge by their forward pack driving over the tryline for a converted try. With the aid of the breeze, Wests fullback Le Lievre had an accurate boot to kick goals for the Pirates to maintain a 10-0 buffer from the Students.
University hardly employed the ball along their backline during the opening half. Some uncharacteristic mistakes were being made by the Students. A wayward University clearing kicking inside their 22 metre area was caught along the eastern touchline by a Pirate. The marauding Pirates backed each other up for a simple try in the far corner. Again Le Lievre’s boot converted the try and University were well and truly facing a mountain of a challenge at 17-0.
Spurred on by the plight of their patron Pirate Johnny Depp aka Jack Sparrow in his recent battle with the Right Honourable Barnaby Joyce, the Pirates were playing with passion and bustling the Students as if they were playing for Boo & Pistol.
ImageProxy.mvc

Some light shone for the Students prior to the half time break when Thomas Carter - University’s pillar - decided to make some amends. On the rare occasion that the backline started swinging the ball, a dart was made by Carter down the western blindside. Running straight Carter drew the defence before offloading to his winger O’Dare. With his electric pace O’Dare raced downfield for a very well engineered try.
A 17-5 deficit was facing the Students at half time. Any chance to achieve a balanced budget for the second half was going to be a difficult but not impossible mission.
West Harbour now facing the wind for the second half continued their tactic of securing any valuable on offer. Le Lievre kicked an early penalty to increase the scoreline to 20-5. University finally had an opportunity midway through the half after a five metre scrum was driven over resulting in number 8 Mitchell Whiteley scoring.
The tit for tat scoring continued when another University indiscretion was punished with a Pirate penalty causing the scoreline to increase to 23-10. The ensuing kickoff by Macklin proved a momentary bonus for University. Wests mistimed the receiving of the ball allowing University to regather. The blindside was targeted and centre Angus Roberts scored a converted try.
ImageProxy.mvc

At 23-17 a converted try could just do it for the Students with less than 8 minutes remaining. But a combination of resolute Wests defence and University not finishing off their play allowed Wests to come out with a victory much to the applause of their well lubricated grandstand cheer squad.
Next week University have no respite against the dreaded Green Rats of Warringah at University Oval.

Allen Oxlade (6)
In the preseason, Head Coach Malone stated the primary objective for SUFC in 2015 was to retain the Club Championship.

At the half way point of the season, Randwick 1467 and Eastwood 1383 lead SUFC with 1249. The Grade teams have a game in hand due to the washout of the Gordon fixture which should allow Uni to close the gap however a win in 1st grade is no certainty.
In recent years the Uni Colts program has contributed mightily to the Club championship but this year also trail Randwick, 474 to 435.
This weekend against Warringah, Uni Colts would expect maximum points of 55, while Randwick have a very tough contest Norths in all colts grades. Hopefully the Shoremen can take a few points off the Wicks especially in 1st colts.

In Grade, there have been a string of close losses so wins this weekend against Warringah are vital. No easy task, looking at the tables where Warringah sit 4th in 1st grade and top in 2nd grade while Uni are 8th and 6th . The contest in 3rd grade will be epic while Uni 4th grade would be favourites.

To retain the Gregor George Cup , Grade needs to lift with the heavy hitting coming from 1st and 2nd Grade.

Well Gents , are we up for the fight !!!!

Round 10 Review - 1st Grade win over Rats in clean sweep weekend for Students

ImageProxy.mvc

By Bruce 'China' Lin
Sydney University got back to singing the victory song last Saturday at University No:1 Oval. But the 28-23 victory was not without a tension filled ending.
That player with the name from the Scottish Highlands five eighth Hamish Angus, kicked an early penalty to start the days points. Angus’ kick was replied shortly after by University’s Byron Hodge with two shots which had the Students ahead of Warringah 6-3 after 10 minutes.
In one of the easiest tries of the season, a kick off to University was allowed to bounce. A trailing Warringah breakaway scooped up the loose ball to score without a hand being laid on him. Once University steadied themselves their efforts delivered the bounty when the ball was spread to the right hill area. Second rower Liam Winton standing like an Eiffel tower, received the last pass to bust over the line to have University ahead 11-10.
ImageProxy.mvc

Rohan O'Regan made his 1st Grade debut in the win over the Rats last weekend
Another Angus penalty had the green Rats narrowly ahead at 13-11 going in to the break. There was enough enterprise shown in the first 40 minutes to indicate the second half would showcase University’s arsenal of attacking plays.
The game had a sentimental touch to it with the return to University of two popular personalities now aligned with the green rodentia. That man with the George Clooney swagger Warringah coach Greg Marr and natural body builder big winger Jack Sullivan.
University’s momentum continued after the break with a cheeky try to half Jake Gordon. Taking advantage of a dominant scrum led up front by loose head prop Ally Ryan sporting the Hagrid facial camouflage suppressing his rugged good looks, Gordon saw a loosely marked open side for a dash to plant the ball untouched over the line. Further penalty kicks to Hodge and Angus saw the score creep up to 21-16 still favouring the Students.
The tide appeared to be favouring the Students as some excellent continuity in play was happening. University were making inroads into Rats territory with their phases of play. Winger Henry Clunies –Ross was back to his best with a slashing diagonal run from his flank splitting the defence for a try. Everything seemed to favour University at 29- 16 even with a man in the sin bin.
ImageProxy.mvc

The speed of Henry Clunies-Ross was on full show against Warringah
But never underestimate a wounded Rat . Still with a one man advantage a converted try was scored courtesy of some loose University tackling off their line. There was less than 10 minutes left and University were still breathing.
The final 2 minutes was a heart pounding period as Warringah were attempting to smash over the University line with the clock winding down. Repeated line outs rucks and mauls were repelled by the Students as a menacing Warringah were proving a handful. The ball was spread wide and Warringah appeared to have an overlap. The whole grandstand were on the edge of their seats, even Guy Sebastian in Vienna took a break from Eurovision 2015 rehearsals to watch the twitter feed. The rat plague was coming and University had used up their rodenticide. But luck fell on the lap of the Students when a backline move was knocked on by Warringah as full time sounded. The game was over and University breathed a big sigh of relief!
Next week University are once again at home against the unpredictable Parramatta.

Round 11 Review - Hard fought victory for Students over a gallant Parramatta side

By Bruce 'China' Lin
In one of the most emotional games ever to take place at University Oval No: 1 Oval, Sydney University in the last 2 minutes ensured a hard fought victory against a gallant Parramatta. The game was held back 40 minutes as the preceding 2nd grade game was marred by a nasty injury suffered by Parramatta number 8 Andrew Vatuvei. The University Club’s prayers are with Andrew and his family. University wish Andrew a speedy and full recovery. More about this later.
Parramatta were on a mission to get into the University faces and they did just that. Their positive game plan paid off when a set move incorporating a cross field kick was collected by a flying breakaway Daniel Tamone for a try in the scoreboard corner. Parramatta were really bustling the Students into errors and midway through the half they were leading University 12 -0. A University pushover try allowed the Students to peg back some points. But on the eve of half time the Two Blues scored again by hammering down the grandstand corner to lead 17-7 at the break.
The second half hardly commenced ideally for the Students as once again Parramatta lifted by scoring that crucial early try under the posts. The Two Blues were riding on a wave of emotion and University were finding it extremely difficult to break down the barrier. University had not lost at home to Parramatta since 1998. Coach Nobby Malone was not about to let this occur but needed to find a solution fast and avoid the onset of achromotrichia giving a new dimension to Fifty Shades of Grey.

The cure came with the introduction of some fresh legs to rejuvenate the University attack which heralded the University comeback.
Conor O’Shea the replacement five eighth ignited the backline by making a break mid field. O’Shea applied a step, an Irish jig and some pace to pin his ears back before you could say “It’s a long way to Tipperary” to cross the line for a converted try. There was still a 10 point deficit but keen observers could sense that Parramatta was fatiguing and University were going to target this area.
University proceeded to play for field position which allowed replacement halfback Jock Merriman to show some cunning. With the ground now bathed under floodlights, Merriman exploited an opening off a ruck. When just about to be tackled, Merriman passed inside to his prop Tom Robertson who scored under the posts. Scores were 24-21 and there were still five minutes remaining - ample time for University to achieve a victory.
University’s godsend arrived with a five metre scrum from the Parramatta line. University were now dominant in the scrums and two sets were collapsed by the Parramatta pack. A final warning from the referee was not adhered to and upon the third scrum collapse a penalty try was awarded. Tears of joy were shed by University on and off the field while the brave Parramatta nearly achieved one of the upsets of the season.

The passionate ending was tempered by the earlier reference to the unfortunate injury to Andrew Vatuvei. University Oval resembled a field hospital as staff were urgently assisting Andrew with a pneumothorax condition – punctured lung. The incredible skills of University’s much loved and respected medico Dr Kath Rae and staff to stabilise Andrew before paramedics arrived was a credit to the University clubs duty of care for players. The guard of honour by players from both clubs as Andrew was conveyed by ambulance was inspiring. In an era where international sport is being tarnished with serious allegations of corruption, it is truly reassuring that good sportsmanship is alive in Sydney club rugby.
Next Friday night University will play Gordon at Chatswood Oval in a catch up washed out round.
