Any of those close to Uni able to confirm or deny the story going round the traps that Colts are moving off St Pauls oval, and that Rugby has reclaimed #2 Oval as the new home of the Colts?

The hope is that by mid-2014 No. 2 Oval will be transformed into a rectangular field with grandstand and function room each more than twice the size of what is now on No. 1. There will also be a large state-of-the-art athletes-only gymnasium under the grandstand.

Colts will probably still play at Paul's, as No.2 will have to accommodate not just Grade Rugby but also Men's and Women's Soccer.

Didn't get to Manly Oval yesterday as I had my 40th but did Hill allow Tim Davidson and Alex Rokobaro to play.If anyone shouldn't have been allowed to play it should have been Davidson who earlier in the week played against the Lions. One rule for one club and another for them. Not surprised though given how many Uni players have been gifted Super 15 spots whilst Hill has been in charge.

How did Jim Stewart go yesterday in 1st Grade for the Students?
Solid - Uni beaten up front but maintained phase pressure and feasted off MMM's errors as they always do . What a great leader they have in Davidson. Hats off to them both sides down on players but more so Uni - the Marlins turned up and lead into 2nd half and were close with 20 to go. 10 and lack of a reliable kicker is becoming a problem for them

There is a real issue around this I am told but not being fully seized of the facts I won't pile into the debate . See above, they certainly benefited from Davidson being there.

Speaking of long lived players there was a fitting presentation before kick off to mark Chris Cottee's retirement after 13 seasons and just under 200 first grade games - Manly legend. They may need him to have a change of heart - Max Wood got absolutely belted and twisted in a about a dozen directions by 3 Uni forwards after receiving a hospital pass in MMM's own 20 just after halftime - knee and season gone. With Lucas still with the 7's/Waratahs, Adam Crerar has to stay injury free !

Not sure the MMM's will get facilities like this when we get kicked off Manly Oval for 2 seasons from 2015 . Just hope the Keirle Park toilets get a bit of plumbing and a repaint!

I hope your Council has factored in the need to look after the Club's interests during those two seasons. It should be built in as part of the cost of the development. One thing that Manly Rugby has is great tribalism centred around the Oval. If that is eroded it will be very hard to rebuild.

Not one of the Two Blues' finest days yesterday but congratulations to Norths on taking out all seven matches. Thommo's restrained report of the First Grade match can be found on the Two Blues website.

Thanks Bruce - certainly the current regime is aware and it seems sympathetic and respectful of the MMM's long and proud tradition. That's the problem though - the current regime may not be there when it really counts. Although the rugby demographic is still strong alternative voices (basket weavers etc) are strong well organised and not necessarily as sympathetic.

I'd hate to think Brookvale Oval ever became an alternative but who knows with Pulverisation....

Given that the Lions Tour was known about before the season draw and I assume the decision to cancel the Sydney v Country game was also made a long time ago, why do we have this current split round and another split round in July (6/7 and 13/7)?

Why aren't we playing a 20 round comp or even 22 rounds (full home and away)?

Having spare weekends for weather catch up games doesn't seem to be a requirement in the NRL. Maybe they have more clout with the councils.
Sorry for the late reply but good sources have told me that the number of games this season was set by the ABC. After last season all clubs wanted to return to the 22 rounds (Home & Away) the ABC told the SRU in no uncertain terms that they would not be showing any rugby if the season was 22 rounds + finals as the broadcast costs for 22 rounds was too high. Therefore a compromise was reached between the ABC and SRU at the 18 rounds we now have. This is the reasoning some people are using to reduce the number of clubs in the competition so that yes with a 9 team competition you can have a home and away system + finals and keep the ABC happy. Although rumours are that the ABC may be dumping rugby altogether after the 2014 season due to growing OB costs and ageing equipment.

Thanks for that input!
My memory suggest there were years in the past where the ABC coverage started 1-2 rounds into the comp so I would have thought the demands of the ABC could have been accommodated and still have had full home-and-away, remembering my original post that there are two split round weekends. The SS could have started two weeks earlier even if the ABC didn't want to cover these two rounds.

Just had a wee google of the Manly Oval development, are they actually planning on putting a car park under the oval?

On topic, I watched the West Harbour v Souths game yesterday and was immensely impressed by the Wests boys, what a comeback that was. The atmosphere being created by the Pirates' lower graders was fantastic too, even through the television coverage. My personal favourite was when they sang Salt N Pepa's 'Push It' every time there was a scrum, great stuff.

I have mixed feelings about the noise created by the lower graders at WH home games. I'm all for the enthusiasm but it can be bloody annoying for the visiting spectators. Call me old fashioned but I still believe the crowd should be quiet for kicks at goal, line out throw ins, etc.
(I'll probably get shot down in flames by the WH posters, but heh I'm entitled to an opinion!!!)

PS: Can't believe the WH supporters enjoy the noise every second week either!

They are indeed planning to put a carpark under Manly Oval to accomodate demolition of the high rise car park in Whistler St behind the Corso - hopefully it will only be 2 seasons at an appropriately resourced Keirle Park- upgraded changeroom and hospitality facilities , temp grandstands etc. Mind you parking on adjacent ovals would be a plus for the time it takes.

Call me old fashioned too but I'm with coach on WH spectator noise and that's an opinion in prospect not from experience !

I'm with that "GALAH" on this, yes it is unfortunate. BUT, know doubt the tribalism can strengthen at times like this.

Gee Dave "that " Galah really does bring to mind the Aussie term of , I hope, affectionate abuse. The galah can be a cunning well disguised bird when scratching around for snippets of info.....In any event I think the only thing we've knowingly disagreed is on who should be 10 for the MMM's oh and possibly Quade Cooper being out of the Wallabies but I reckon the argument has shifted in my favour on that one. Can any rugby fan agree on selection of 10's even at club level ?

There's one for the thread - who is the best non Super 15 10 in the Shute Shield 2013 on form to date this season?
