The Wallabies Thread

Hooper had one pilfer as well.

The reality is they will probably both start for the Wallabies again because they're the two best backrowers in the country (and two of the best players we have).

At the end of last year it seemed like we had very good depth on the wing but a lot of the incumbents have been a bit disappointing this year. The Rebels trio, Naivalu, Hodge, and Koroibete have been a out of form so far and Speight did not look good last night either.

Daugunu and Taqele have definitely had the most impact so far, although I doubt Daugunu is eligible and Taqele is probably only ever going to come off the bench as weaknesses that can be hidden at Super level likely can't be at national level (although kudos to him it looks like he's worked on his handling and work rate). Maddocks deserves a mention as well although he hasn't looked as good since he moved to fullback.

I still expect Hodge and Koroibete to be picked come June but we need them to start finding a bit of form soon.

Izaia Perese!

But seriously, he should be good. Daugunu isn't likely to be Wallaby eligible any time soon.

If he is in the side he should be fullback, with Folau on the wing.

100%, i thought that should have been the selection last year, however last year Hunt was also playing very well at fullback and was another option ahead of Folau.

DHP has a better kicking and passing game then Folau, which creates opportunities at fullback which Folau can’t. Folaus strengths are his aerial work and strength in contact which aren’t lost on the wing. If he plays 11 he can sit in the pocket ready for the kicks anyway, but he now has a fullback supporting him who provides an option other then just running it back.

That’s no slight on Folau, it’s just playing a player to his strengths.

Naiavalu before his injury last year was the best specialist winger in Australia IMO, so if can regather that form then I want a back 3 of:

11- Folau
14- Naiavalu
15- DHP

Also agree. Think DHP is better suited to fullback. I am not 100% convinced that DHP has the speed to be an international winger. Less of an issue for fullbacks.

DHP reminds me of Chris Latham, who I always considered to be an absolute legend and great fullback.

Disagree, there is a stark difference in positioning both defence and attack of the wingers and fullback

Except when Folau plays at Fullback he defends on the wing... except everyone defends on the wing in the current Wallabies setup.

Folau has to be 14 because of his right foot step. I couldn't believe it last year when the Wallabies played the Barbarians last year and they picked him on the left wing. Pretty good back three apart from that.

You are probably right FP, I'd be happy with either he or Naivalu TBH.

The bigger query is who is going to be 13 - Kerevi's playing OK but his defence is sus and probably will remain so. TK is being very uninspiring however he generally lifts once he pulls gold on. Hodge would have to be a contender but he's not going great either.

CFS has been playing very well. Also Kerevi's defence looks much improved but he is more playing 12.

It's an interesting question. Who have the Waratahs and Rebels been playing at 13 -- whoever they are I can't think of them so they mustn't be playing that well.

Koroibetes positional defence hasnt been great with the rejigged rebels backs. I think a bit part of that is DHP was a big positional communicator, and mostly due to alot of the Hurricanes points were scored when there were multiple tight 5 forwards defending together in the wider channels so Koroibete got sucked in.

Rebels played Hodge there on Friday, it's been English otherwise and he had been good. Waratahs have been playing Foketi and Rona there.

All this talk of Folau playing wing for the Wobs instead of Fullback.

Just who is the upgrade?

I could understand "if" we had a better 15, who could run and catch near as well as Folau - and had that quality kicking game

I just don't see anyone that is an actual upgrade
