Wallabies 2021

So why do some loose heads play both sides and some don’t?
Robertson started as a tight head and was shifted to suit the team. He's now been asked to move back. Same with Kepu I think.

Ideally, they could all just specialise. Useful have a bloke who can play the other side in a pinch though.

Robertson changed from THP to .loose head to accommodate Kepu for the Tahs. It's been a wile since he played any significant time there. You're right though, he can play there at a pinch

It’s like anything I guess. Some people struggle less with intricacies of the position and can adapt. For other people you really want to keep it simple.

Also the nature of scrummaging has changed quite a bit over the years due to law tweaks, at the moment I feel the scrummaging laws support tall powerful looshead props who can physically dominate their opposition, whereas even a few years ago I think it was better suited to shorter stockier looseheads who could set lower under their opposition.

The engagement sequence is the biggest factor here.

Kerevi's injury not as bad as first thought. May be out for four weeks, hopefully back in time for Scotland, if not definitely England according to SMH.

4 weeks is still a fairly significant time out, being a lower body injury he probably won’t be fully fit either.

Hopefully we get to see Paisami at 12 outside Cooper now, will be a good measuring stick for the depth of this team.

I feel like most of the coaching these days is around the post engagement movements.

The engagement sequence itself is so slow and guided by the referee now that each front row has ample time to adjust their height if needed.

A lot of the higher grade coaches I’ve spoken to have said how much more they prefer live scrums for training over the machines as well. Machines were great for setting height and getting engagement power and timing correct, which have less significance now.

Agreed. It might lighten these pages with all the speculation of trying players out of position. If Rennie sees Wright as a 15 and the brumbies want to continue with Banks (as an example) the ARU could put him with another province.

But also lots of negatives.

This seems frought with "danger" for the lesser unions like the Western Force.

They appear to be building up their own head of steam as far as development structures are concerned and why would they even contemplate letting Rugby Australia get their grubby paws over them again after what they went through previously under their "stewardship".

As RR said “ on the surface”. I'd hope it was done with all the provinces pushing in the same direction. I think it’s good in that we as a nation can have all the talent playing (no stockpiling). For example, The Tahs have a few good 5/8ths, Brumbies locks, Reds outside backs. If we can get all of them playing Super Rugby somewhere instead of running water and doing opposed drills at training it’s a result for the wallabies. But yes, it will be interesting how it plays out really. The Force have been Twiggys project since they were chucked out. He’s now supposed to share his funding, etc when he’s kept them afloat? And the only reason they came back is Covid happened and we needed an extra team? I can’t imagine he’s a crap negotiator. I’m sure he has a clear vision of where he and the force sit in this whole idea.

Hardly "lots".
It's a negative from one point of view, maybe. I think RA has shown a changed attitude to the Force lately, and I think the principles of this proposal are very promising for the whole of Aus rugby.
But I get where you're coming from.

I guess because their players will inevitably want to represent Australia and take RA money.

Not sure what the lure of the WA academy will be without that at the end of the tunnel.

I don’t think they could just put him in another franchise. Wright may prefer to play wing for the Brumbies rather than fullback for the Tahs.

it may be easier to facilitate a negotiation however.

So if Australia have an undefeated NH tour and both NZ and SAF lose one then we move to world #1
Far cry from 4 weeks ago …:) :)
‘My’ goal was to finish the year at #4. Not counting baby chooks just yet but they may well outperform that.
