Wallabies 2023

Do we even have a defence coach at the moment? My understanding was Fisher was only temporary appointment. Not ideal world cup prep if both defence and attack assistants are part timers off with super sides the first half of the year.

Not ideal for this situation but longer term I actually think the assistants should have more involvement with the Super Rugby teams during the season.

After all, the Wallabies are our flagship team, but they are the sum of the parts of our Super Rugby teams (plus some extras). Having a unified structure and ethos is something that we have lacked.

Gilmore is a defence coach.

They should bring in Peter Hewat, he's coaching the Black Rams and the Japan Top League finishes in April, plenty of time to join Wallabies.
That's his role at the tahs, but most of his experience is as a head coach. Either way the point of appointing Gilmore wouldn't be for specialist attack perspective, it would be to minimise disruption and get someone who could hit the ground running and continue to implement the systems they've been using so far. Not particularly inspiring, but probably the safest option.

I agree Hewat would be a good appointment, but I'm not sure how much he can bring to the role in such a short time, particularly given there will likely be big changes immediately following the world cup. It'd likely only work if he and his Japanese club were ok with him doing the role as well and coming back to them afterwards.

Yeah, I agree with that in principal, but it's the sort of thing that needs to be a considered, planned system, and probably more about the wallabies assistants dropping into the super sides as a value add like we've seen recently. Or alternatively the super assistants handling Australia A. Holding both roles simultaneously seems like too much split focus, and at too important a time.

All that said it didn't go too poorly in 2015, so who knows how it'll turn out.

Gilmore is a defence coach.

Best candidate is Peter Hewat, he's coaching the Black Rams, Japan Top League finishes in April, plenty of time to join Wallabies.

why is he the best candidate for attacking coach?

Black Rams haven’t been a success, especially their attack. They’ve been one of the lowest scoring teams in Japan the past 2 seasons.

Even during his tenure as the Brumbies attacking coach, their back play wasn’t fantastic it was the forwards who dominated.

It seems hard to be an assistant coach. All the talk is of who will replace Rennie as opposed to which assistant is next in line. Most assistants are doing it to get a head coaching gig somewhere, pure and simple. I understand it’s a high profile gig and the ARU has to make a big announcement in the press, etc. but being the understudy would be difficult for ambitious coaches when there may be a better head coaching role elsewhere. All that being said, surely the people who did Aus A last year would be looked at first.

If Quade is fit and in form, who needs an attack coach?

Perhaps Wallabies could link Quade back up with his favourite attack coach again?

Although I will add that there is, in my opinion, a pretty recurrent theme of talent stagnating in Aus and excelling elsewhere.
Wrong, it is not talent stagnation it is training, skills development and coaching that is killing our talent. This is proven by the number of no talent players going overseas and showing us up as dumb.

Rodha, so one of the world's top coaches with a proven record to back it up is a no-nothing rank amateur. Is that your argument?
Mine is a self-centred, highly talented, slimy, gutless individual who wanted to do his own thing and be the next Carlos Spencer, got ignored by Deans and spat the dummy.

He was riding a bike with Beau Robinson on the Gold Coast yesterday so hopefully he's well on track for a return....

Beau Ryan* - I reckon he’s the sorta bloke who would hire Jason Bourne to hunt you down if you ever confused him with Beau Robinson.

But yes, Quade seems to be at least mobile, riding bikes, swimming, playing golf etc. without the need of a boot or anything.
