Wallabies v Lions, 19 July Suncorp

I’m not sure what all the negativity is about in here. Lions were clinical in the first half and won the moments, but our boys were right in that contest and have a couple key troops to return for the next two tests.

Thought Lynagh was relatively composed and looked comfortable out there. A kick or two he could’ve landed better but I really didn’t think he looked out of place, especially for a 22 year old on debut. I’d give him another go.

8 points in it, 10 points given up 2 minutes into both halves. They’ll be better for the experience and the next test should be a belter.

Heads up boys. 80,000 at the MCG next week rugby is alive and well in Aus, and Bobby V is on his way. Let’s fuckin trot.

Watching the game back as I've been in the air (on the way back to Oz for tests 2 and 3). Some scattered thoughts, much might have already been covered.
- Russell is a fucking good 10, my gosh. Beirne, Genge, Furlong are excellent players.
- Lynagh is a tough bastard
- Wilson is an awesome captain, don't know why we can't just lock him in properly
- Lion dominance for first 45 minutes was built around the air (kick game/chase, lineout).
- Curry is a great player but literally lives offside - hope we either a) point this out or b) start to push the boundaries as well.
- Few too many trick plays for my liking, don't blow your load in the first half of a three test series.
- Potter is a good player but given Pietsch's performance for the Force - the best I saw from a Super player), I am sure he is wondering what else he has to do. Need his ability to bend the line.
- I actually thought Ikitau and JAS both had good games, just need more ball especially in 1st half. But they are great into contact.
- Pollard was really good. Very interesting choice if Porecki is available (?) with the three hookers.
- Sick of Frost to be honest, the bloke just folds into contact. 2 row was too light for mine. Wish LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) and Phillip were in the selection frame. For me those two + Skelton is much better than the 2row options we had out there.
- I generally thought BOK had a pretty decent game. The main problem I had was that the JAS disallowed try should have been a yellow, he does not use arms.. However, I much prefer his wild west style of breakdown refereeing to the overly pedantic NH types - don't need to see endless technical infringements.

Big picture, I do understand the game/selection plan in the absence of Skelton/Valetini/Gleeson (keep it tight, bring on Bell, McDermott, Tizzano etc and motor over the top of them). However, with the lack of starch versus their massive (and very good pack) the scoreboard was just too big. Touch wood the big units are available and I would change up selection (bobby, skleton, gleeson, pietsch all in) and try go over the top of them.

A bit to be proud of, a lot to work on, potential there, many wallabies teams would have completely faded. Some different bounces of the ball (to be fair, applies to both teams), and could have been an absolute highway robbery.

Also the online lions fans are the biggest bunch of sooks, holy moly. Hopefully some of the touring lots will be better sorts.

They are Brit’s. What else would you expect? No mention of 30% of their team being Aussie/Nz through to adulthood which frankly should be a little embarrassing.

We need to bend the line more in the first half which will force them to play more defense and tire them out bringing the surge from aus earlier in game with a more tired lions outfit.
The back line took awhile to make space and for me too much kicking from us that wasn’t tactical. They also beat us to the high ball a lot in the first half.
line out misses obviously dissapointing and need to be fixed.
Bobby v obviously in. I though NCDC was a great big body and would have him in the 23z
I think LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) should be onto the bench and replace Skelton at 60.
I’d either bring bell on sooner or start him. He’s a wrecking ball.
Potter was poor. Bad kick option in first half that cost us and knock one.
I’d bring Donaldson on at 60, Tate start and if he comes off come off at 70 maybe putting Nick white on with his kicking ability

The way we've been set up to play cost us the game more than any player position swap did.

Not immediately clearing from our own half after the very first kick off resulted in 3 points.

Trying to catch the Lions napping via a trick play via the line out and getting caught out resulted in 7 points.

Poor defensive line speed meant Finn Russell had all the time in the world to do what he wanted.

Poor box kicks that didn't go high or far enough meant we were constantly stuck in our own half. Telling Jake to either pass or kick meant our runners outside of him were easily marked and meant their ruck defence could immediately put pressure on us.

Tackle in the air, direct contact with shoulder to head, no arms tackle on the try line, 8+ penalties within the Lions 22 and no yellow.

Yeah, nah. OKeefe was exactly as spectacularly fucking spastic as expected.

Derps, I agree with you but the touchies and TMO all agreed with him on every decision, they are allowed to disagree with him aren't they?
