The format this year is completely new. Don't know how they did it previously. In the past cHS organised it this year NSW schools have taken over organising it

Thanks - I guess it has been mentioned in other posts but it didn't register - and that's why some of the big private schools are fronting up this year.

Anybody know how the Waratah Cup is run? And why do a team qualify to enter that and not have to go through the same process as other teams in the Tah Shield. Somebody wrote that it's a comp for teams without a rugby programme, but does theat mean, in effect, that they are not affiliated with CHS, ISA, GPS etc?

Teams without a rugby program

The term "no Rugby program" refers to a school that doesn't play regular Rugby in a local competition. No week to week commitments.
These schools can be CHS high schools, or private high schools (CCC etc) that have a group of football kids that probably play rugby union/league on the weekend and are keen for a game.
This sort of competition allows all students at schools, with these numbers and an interested teacher, to get involved.

Waratah Cup Finals

The games will take place at Woollahra Oval, O’Sullivan Rd, Rose Bay on Wednesday 20 July. All teams will play 2 games on the day. Each game will be 45 minutes in duration (i.e. 22.5 min halves).

9:30am - Game 1
St Francis Xavier Hamilton v Northern Beaches Secondary College

10:25am - Game 2
Mudgee High v St Columbus High

11:15-12pm – Break

12pm – Game 3
3 v 4 play off

1pm – Game 4 - Final
Winner Game 1 v Winner Game 2
(both teams invited to join Waratah Shield)

I think it is rediculous that the chs schools have to play these gps schools so early. Ashfield had a round two game against Kings, Epping boys against oakhill. Ashfield struggle to field a team week by week, kings has over 30 rugby sides, same thing with Epping and Oakhill.

The GPS also have other committments which can cause them injuries or having players unavailable.
At some point CHS schools like Ashfield will meet GPS or other private schools. This is the reality of such a competition. If they are good enough they will prevail.

My understanding is that the comp is seeded. Therefore they keep the heavyweights apart until the pointy end of the comp, that necessitates that the minnows of the comp play the more fancied teams early on.
It would not be fair for say newington to play Hills High in this round & for one of them to be knocked out,while Ashfield played epping boys and one of these Schools went through and played deeper into the comp.

Would like to see this team progress to play Newington in a quarter

Manlyboy - who when and where are they playing.

Hate the school name they should of stuck to Manly Boys High School. They have produced some mighty footballers over the years including the late great Rex Mossop.

The NBSC team is a combination of Manly High School, Cromer High School and Balgowlah Boys as none of these schools can field a team on their own.

NBSC is a combination of Freshwater, Manly, Cromer and Bally Boys. They shouldn't be allowed to compete but get away with it because they claim to be 1 school with 5 campuses if you include Mackeller Girls. They should do OK as the majority of team won the Buchan Shield 2 years ago. Only people really missing from that team are Hopoate and Wolfgramm.

Lily - thanks forgot Freshy. isn't the idea to have as many competitive teams in the Waratah Shield as possible and to have as many boys playing school rugby as possible - without this side as many as 20 boys would be disadvantaged. Just a thought and i respect your opinion.

NBSC will have a good side but I would watch out for Mudgee High - a very strong country rugby union school

As someone who has previously taught and coached these teams I dont think it is fair at all. This is especially demonstrated in the younger years when they get the best Pacific Islanders from Cromer and Bally . The only real benefit is to the manly High kids who wouldn't have any chance of entering a team. There are enough footballers at the other schools to form teams. The problem is that at all these schools there is absolutely nobody pushing Rugby as they are all league guy's. The only exception would be Jason Grier who is part-time but also one who has no time on his hands.

I didn't realise it was a combined side. No matter I will pop out for a look Wed morning.

Lily - surely it is a good thing for these boys to combine and have a real crack. If indeed Rugby is not being pushed hard in each school then doesn't it give the boys a better chance of playing decent schoolboy rugby and isn't easier on the teachers that do give their time to coach. On another note if the schools are combined for academic purposes what is the problem with combining sport. Or have I got it wrong. Cheers

Nice sentiment. So why not let all the catholic schools on the Northern beaches enter one team or the Anglicans etc.
Imagine a single squad of players from, Mater, Auggies and St Pauls.
