What do you make of Benji Marshal to rugby?

Well the real winners out of this are the Kangaroos.

I don't follow league, but apparently he has single handedly torn them up quite a few times.

Not recently unfortunately.

Billy Slater has probably been one of the best player for the Kwis on a couple of occasions...

Hell there no way he will ever make All Blacks, don't watch league, but he would have to pretty special to hope to knock Carter, Cruden or Barrett from All Blacks. More chance maybe of specialising in 7s??

Agree.

The bolded part was a big factor previously I think for Benji - the lure of playing at the Olympics. I thought I heard that Shaun Johnson from the Wariors was also pretty keen to have a crack at a gold medal as well.

He is a one quick-ass player too......

If he can play a lot of the ITM season I will be very interested to watch him next year.

Now let's get SBW back and make sure Izzy stays. That will send the leaguies into meltdown.

Paul Kent & other sports "journos" (I use the term journo very loosely) are already going off trying to paint Benji as some kind of gold digger & putting the boot into him as a player. Typical.

If he went to Japanese Rugby it would be easy for them to continue that line that its all "money related". However, if Benji goes to the Blues (as indicated) I can't imagine they'd be able to pay the same as the Japanese comp or what the Tigers were offering. To me, if that is the case then Marshalls managers claims that Benji really wasn't enjoying things at the Tigers & needed a change - tend to become the more honest reason as to why he is leaving.

I think Benji is a good guy from what I've seen of him. I don't think he'll crack the ABs given the amount of depth they already have but he's talented & he'll give it a red hot go. I'm looking forward to seeing him play Rugby.

EDIT: the 7's idea is a realistic one, I reckon he'd be great at 7's.

Pretty sure he doesn't even make the team any more. The NZ halves are Johnson and Foran.

The most I think about it, Marshall should play halfback. The Blues' replacement Gibson-Park is useless and Piri is coming to an end.

I actually think Benji could play either 10 or 12. He's not exactly the smallest guy, bigger than Dan Carter. He could be a genuine 2nd 5/8 in the Tom Taylor, Tim Bateman, Aaron Mauger mould where his running/distribution game could be used to great effect.

It is what it is

Benji has 2 bad habits that threaten his value in both league and union.
1. He runs across field all the time.
2. He has become reluctant to take on the line and go into contact.

Who wants these habits in a 7/6 in RL or 10/12 in RU?

It always amazes me how league types go into an absolute frenzy when a player looks like moving from league to rugby. The "it's all about money line" strikes me as being bizarre from a sport which spent the best part of 90 years signing talent from rugby for ... money. It's called professional sport for a reason - yes people make decisions, based to at least some extent on money. It's also why players move from one RL club to another.

Paul Kent is a dribbler of the lowest quality. He's a league advocate, not a journo. He even speaks like the less erudite amongst the league fraternity. Amazing considering his profession involves the use of the English language.

I do have reservations about how well he would go in rugby though. I don't think he's in the SBW or Folau class in 15 a side. Sevens would be another matter. I think he'd need a bit of time at ITM cup level and then possibly super level before I'd make a judgement.

Sevens, however, is a different matter. I think that players like him and QC (Quade Cooper) would be top shelf in 7s.

OK, I was wrong about Izzy.

But this time for sure: FUCK. NO.

We already have a Quade Cooper in Australian rugby. The Tahs already have hype machines in Folau and Beale, as well as solid guys like Horne, AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) and Crawford.

Be a great recruit for Penrith Emus - Somewhere - anywhere.

Really can't see him going much further in the 15 aside game.

Different story in the 7's. Tonnes of potential there I reckon.

how the hell can the tahs afford him within the salary cap???
I think we're all thinking the same. The only solace I have is that their first priority is Folau, then Beale, then Marshall. If everything falls over then perhaps.... But to be frank I'm not overjoyed. Love to see him in 7s, but not with Teijens.

We might have to do a bit of extra ground hiring next year to make sure there are enough options for training.

Gold. Made me laugh aloud.
New story came out with the Waratahs CEO coming out saying they're interested in signing Marshall.

Can't possibly imagine how Cheika would organise a backline containing Folau, Beale, Phipps, Marshall, Foley, AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper), Horne and Crawford, but it's a good problem to have. Can't see Marshall signing unless Beale doesn't though.
