McLennan is just saying the right things to support the partners. NZ are the bad guys and we want to keep it that way.

At this stage, the Force excluded, the $$$ are probably not there but it doesn't mean that they wont in the future. This is especially true if the club (over state) direction is more strongly pushed (with the potential for PE).

A PI team based in Western Sydney is the start of this.

The Tahs are reportedly 2m under the cap ATM. How much would an Argentine command? A few hundred?

Would be a reasonable stop gap. Plus, they are going to be the centerpiece next year, with by far the worst squad.

The article also says the Tahs and the Reds don't have the concessions of foreign players as the other teams do so I doubt the Tahs will be able to buy many Argentinian players

A salary cap is a maximum. If you cant afford it you cant afford it.

Obviously, i meant they can change the limitation on foreign players for the Tahs and Reds at any time.

Its worth it IMO. Watching the Tahs get spanked every weekend isnt gunna be the greatest start to the FTA component of the new deal.

Question for the wise: What is the TT component of the 2021 comp called?

Is it SupeRugby? Or some other name (perhaps neccessary due to brand ownership)?

Presumably now there will be some clarity around the distribution from Rugby Australia for 2021 though and that will need to be spent on player salaries because of the CBA. So if the Tahs are under that they will have some budget to spend.

NRL draw is out and suncorp is free the whole weekend of the Super Round. Hopefully they make the sensible choice and host it in QLD.

Edit: Looks like the NRL is taking a game to Perth that weekend too, so that might rule them out.

RA set to fund Western Force as franchise looks to complete unlikely return to the fold

Tom Decent - Sydney Morning Herald - 28 November 2020

"Rugby Australia is set to agree to the Western Force's request for an equal share of broadcast revenue in next year's Super Rugby AU competition in a sign the club is back for the long haul.

The move has taken Super Rugby franchises by surprise as they wait for a participation agreement and to find out what the salary cap and other key regulations will be for next year's competition."

"Super Rugby bosses had been under the impression the Force would pay their own way again in 2021, but sources close to negotiations have told The Sun-Herald a request was made by the Force to split broadcast revenue evenly across the five sides."

"Super Rugby officials have expressed concerns privately about what the Force's involvement will do to their bottom line given the change to again fund five teams. However, RA's view is that widespread cuts throughout the game have meant five teams in the long term is now viable, particularly with the security of a broadcast deal."

"Meanwhile, Australian franchises are yet to see – or sign – a participation agreement for Super Rugby AU or Super Rugby Trans-Tasman. They do not know how much money they will receive from head office."

Isn't it reasonable for the Western Force to request an equal share for equal participation?

Why would Western Force be expected to pay it's own way in 2021?
If it's because of the private ownership of the Western Force, then doesn't the Melbourne Rebels also have private ownership?

I'm interested as to the identity of the "Super Rugby officials who have expressed private concerns about the Force's involvement....."
I suggest that the Western Force and rugby fans in WA are entitled to be cautious when being asked to move forward......

Aren't all Super Rugby officials also RA officials??

It's interesting that RA announced the 2021 SRAu fixture before sorting out the participation agreement and the distribution of broadcast revenue.

The comment: ".....but questions have been raised about how long Forrest will continue to remain involved", just seems like dis-information to me. What's the source or basis for such a comment?

I suggest that Forrest's support of grass roots rugby and the current spate of recruitment for 2021 belie such rumour-mongering.

Why would Western Force be expected to pay it's own way in 2021?

a) Yes it is completely reasonable for WA Force to expect equatable share of income, subject to the same arrangements as everyone else.

b) The reason that this would start in 2022 would be that the sport needs to settle and re-establish and Force/Mindaroo have been presenting themselves with independence. But that only holds if relevant discussions were held up front and a way forward discussed, if not agreed.

It is not hard to imagine that RA have presented things to Force in this format. Just like Force funded themselves in 2020. Nor is it hard to imagine the other four franchises have been anticipating some kind of financial relief as matters firm up. Just consider the position the Waratahs seem to find themselves in.

To be fair, it also isn’t hard to imagine that as things have moved quickly, Force return to RA suggesting income more quickly. They can after all “request”.

In terms of broadcast and other deals still being somewhat nascent, honest FF (Folau Fainga'a), have you not been present in 2020? RA, for once, are doing well. Long may it continue.
