I actually think that ratings in Australia for ALL sports are poor, with a population of over 24 million you would think more people would tune in. Would be really interested to find out the TV ratings for the Pro 14, Top 14 and English comp.

As a side not I know that attendances are poor this year but to put it into perspective, this is an article on 2017 attendances for European rugby

  • January 9, 2017

Last week two sets of figures were published. On Wednesday the Aviva Premiership disclosed that attendances are up 10.1% this season with the average gate an impressive 13,833. Two days later Midi Olympique revealed that Top 14 attendances in the first half of the 2016-17 season are down 8.8%, and that for the first time since 2010 the average crowd has dipped below 13,000 and now stands at 12,824. It’s a similar story in the ProD2 with attendances 3% down on the previous season.

Of the fourteen clubs in the top flight of French rugby, only Clermont and La Rochelle have seen their average crowds rise this season, the latter from 14,821 to 15,000 and Clermont’s from 17,048 to 17,684.

Among the clubs who have experienced an alarming drop in gates are Toulouse (a 5.8% decline) and reigning Top 14 champions, Racing 92, whose average crowd this season is 8,863, a drop of 12.8% on last season. But that’s still small compared to neighbours Stade Francais, whose average gate is 9,321, 22% lower than last season.
So what’s behind the dramatic slump in attendances? There’s no doubt two years of terrorist outrages have had an effect on crowd numbers, particularly in Paris, which has experienced two mass-casualty attacks.
In 2014-15 the average gate for a Top 14 match was 13,754, and now two seasons later it’s down to 12,824. It’s not just that some people might be frightened of going to sporting occasions in the wake of what happened at the Stade de France in November 2015, but it’s also the rigmarole involved in attending a match

Cheers!

Again I think as much as people say that Australians are mad about sports it really does not reflect in terms of TV viewers, again across all sports IMO. Maybe a lot of people are watching through different online platforms? I actually watch a fair bit of rugby online these days

everyone is online playing games.
Our house for example, full of boys who love rugby and all sports, the TV has not been turned on at all for months, no sport no anything other than games.
This is not appreciated by the old guard, the world has almost moved on from televised sport.
Online competition is 10,000 times as big.

Aleague on track to record a 20% drop year on year and average under 50k. FTA ratings just as bad, and much less than the SBS years.

What's the lesson there for games simulcast on commercial tv?

Been a disaster of a tv year for them

@Chronicle - Fixed. ;)

The 40% decline in memberships since 2015, declining walk up crowds, comments on the Brumbies face book page expressing discontent at the teams performance and at the inabilities of the coaching team. Similar comments and commentary on GAGR, and in other forums from both supporters of the Brumbies and others in the Rugby community who believe and warned the appointment of McKellar would see a drop in performance and as a mistake appear to validate the declining numbers. In the absence of other evidence like poor weather or other events to compete with its hard to find other reasons.

Geez a 40% decline in membership, that is not a small figure 40%, if that is true, then there is real issues

Globalisation and gentrification has killed the communities and clubs that used to love rugby, or significantly weakened them. Broader social trends - civic engagement is in decline, community engagement is in decline, are all reflective. .

Essentially people my age would rather live in new farm and scoff avocado rather than be part of a community of mates.

Sad!

Sport no longer holds the prestigious place it once did in Australian society because of these elitists

We need a grass roots community revolution and need to argue the benefits that sport brings

Isn't the problem there is no rugby club in New Farm? Go where the "customers" are!

And yeah, I was only half serious given the issues with finding room for a rugby ground in that part of Brissie

The funny thing is that there are plenty of people that I know that like rugby yet refuse to attend games, even the guys at the Rugby Report Cards Joke about not going to games.

As far as the Tahs go, yes we can blame the stadium, weather and other events but the reality is that somewhere along the line they lost the fans and they never recovered. I mentioned this before, if you are thinking of going to a game please do so and drag a mate, watching on TV? Invite a mate over and it does not have to be Super Rugby just any rugby game.

The rugby on display this year has been great IMO and hopefully it continues to improve

In 2015 they had about 9000 members and it appeared to be on the up.
2016 was the year of the board room war.
In 2018 reporting has the membership at the 5000 range.

Imagine Netflix/Stan are largely to blame. On a Friday/Sat night you can now sit at home and watch good tv/movie as opposed to pre streaming when a lot of people would watch sport due to the lack of alternative. I wonder what the correlation is in sports viewers dropping and streaming services increasing?

NZHurld claim that both live & tv audiences are up in SA this year, is there any evidence out there to support or refute this? Article was under Gregor Paul's by-line so I'm a little sceptical as he also claimed the same is true for Australia which, based on the numbers I'm seeing on here, doesn't seem to be the case.

Data for NZ is hard to come by (for me anyway) but SKY continues to bleed subscribers & given that even they admit rugby is one of the main subscription drivers I suspect their numbers are probably down, hence they've recently introduced some more flexible plan options & made pretty much all of them cheaper. Crowds don't seem to get published much these days & are subject to padding (e.g. counting every season ticket holder whether they attend or not) which, again, suggests to me that maybe they're not that flash.

I suspect the Raiders coming good around that time has more to do with the membership decline than the boardroom shenanigans. A lot of folk follow both teams but aren’t going to buy two memberships- they’ll choose one or the other.

The new cricket TV deal is going to throw the cat amongst the pigeons.

Some ODI, T20 and Big Bash will be Foxtel only.

No cricket on channel 9.

TBH not much, soccer has been in a civil war for two years.

They still have people queuing up to get in.

If in doubt follow the money they are within weeks maybe months of creating an independent league with the clubs running it and starting up a second division.
