What annoys me about the light and mobile thinking is that it doesn't mesh with traditionally dominant packs. I'm not saying everyone of the 8 needs to be some kind of monster but the best packs find a balance between size and mobility. The Tahs would be better served with two larger locks to help provide some more grunt with a pretty mobile loose forward contingent in Hooper, Dempsey and Holloway.

Got some large locks (Simmons and Staniforth). Pity they don't play their size.

Yeah, it's because they don't play their size is why I don't consider them as big forwards. When I say big I mean guys who can bend and at times break the line. Simmons does it on rare occasion (bend the line) while Staniforth is utterly useless.

Who does this at all, in modern rugby?

It's all super fast defensive lines and 100kg+ blokes. At best you get players that don't get pushed back.

Plenty make metres in contact. It doesn't need to be 5-10m a time. Just beyond the advantage line and allowing the next phase to be on the front foot. What the Tahs have now is forwards starting from a stationary position receiving the ball and practically dropping to the turf at the first sign of contact. Which allows for the defence to stifle the ruck speed which sort of defeats the idea of having a mobile pack.

Again it doesn't need to be more than 2m or more beyond the point of contact just forward momentum and bigger bodies in motion are better at doing this.

I see Simmons as the set piece lock we needed. He helped our lineout and scrum. I was happy with that. We lacked the size to not get trampled by bigger packs and to go forward.

So what does this mean for Cron, what is his title for next year, wasnt he forwards and D? I think they need to be careful not to alienate him and potentially lose him to another franchise, NZ or overseas. His involvement was the big difference last year and think we need him signed on long term if we want success.

Gibson was defence coach. Cron was forwards coach.

I agree. The problem is the Tahs seem hell bent on the light mobile pack idea
