Don’t RA people read these threads? Can you send a letter of as soon as RN? I do like it, got a lot going for it, prevents boredom of too much of same thing of a few teams playing each other twice etc.

Actually this wasn't from press but someone in rugby, who has been pretty accurate in things he has told me from Fiji and islands . He was saying there wasn't an awful lot of raptures with some in been how he thought was been used last year. You know Hamish going to press with stories of Drua being invited to join the mythical comp Aus was starting to show NZR what for. As he said what was upsetting anyone with a smidgen of brain would of noticed that RA was almost broke at that stage, and there was no way, and he knew it, that Fiji could even contemplate joining any such comp.
Bit like the Lions tour to Aus this year? The bottom line is I have said time and again I know and like that Hamish knows how to use press to make RA look good, all you need is enough gullible people to swallow it.
But anyway let's not go there again
Don’t RA people read these threads?
It’s odd how you never brought up this friend when we discussing these issues earlier, and odd that despite having an inside scoop from a reliable source you were inaccurate/ill-informed on a number of key topics over the past 12 months.
It’s even more odd that your friend who you trust to be honest would talk openly about commercial in confidence issues. It really seems like an all too convenient story just you to take a dig at Hamish and to label others as lacking in brains and gullible. Dan, who’s to say your not the gullible one here and your mate is the one full of shit?
Have a crack at McLennan all you like Dan, fact is those assholes at NZRU wanted 2 or 3 Australia teams cut and for Australian Rugby to capitulate to New Zealand demands. If Hamish was the hot air you make him out to be, then we wouldn’t have hosted the rugby championship in 2020 and wouldn’t be here with 5 Australian teams to support and a broadcast agreement with FTA. You’re right about one thing though, he uses the press to make RA look good
If they do then those poor unfortunate souls are not being paid nearly enough.
Time to abandon ship on this thread again, as we're past the mythical 1k pages, and it's back to the same old same old.
Nobody pls reply to this shitpost as it will popup on my alerts tab thingy.
And I would add it shows how it all got twisted, I never heard or even read about NZ wanting 2-3 teams cut, and I bet you haven't either.
Do you think we could see with investment a pro club competition in Aus
I was thinking with the TV coverage coming for club rugby is this something that we can build from?
There are what 9 clubs in Qld and 13 in Sydney this is already 22 and where it gets difficult as we would have to create divisions and get some clubs in from Melbourne Perth and Canberra. Just a random thought that came into my head. I don’t know if it’s possible at all
Well the NZRU lead Aratipu report made the recommendation of an 8-10 team competition featuring 5 Kiwi teams, listed a pacific island team as a priority and said individual Australian teams can submit an EOI to participate?
Brett Impey - NZRU Chairman
"The Aratipu Report is what we referred to which recommended the 8-10 team(Trans Tasman) competition, which we have shared out and that was the basis of that recommendation”
Michael Collins - Chiefs CEO
“I have made no secret of the fact I would like to see an eight-team competition,’' Collins said.
Steven Hansen
“Do we owe them(Australia) something? No. But because we are the nation we are, and we care about the game more than just ourselves, we bend and buckle a bit.
Now I’m not a mathematician, but 5 Kiwi teams, plus a PI team, plus 5 aussie teams (11 teams) doesn’t fit the 8-10 team model recommended in the NZRU report.
Thank fuck for hamish mclennan.
Whoops just remembered!
No but you said they were taking out 2-3 Aus teams. If there 10 teams that is and if there was a PI team ( and that was a preferred option) that leaves 4 Aus teams. How many Aus teams were in Super rugby when report was being formed? Oh hell that's right 4! Force weren't there RA had dumped them a couple of years back. Don't forget before that report came out there was discussion in Aus whether RA could still afford the 4 teams they had.
And Chiefs CEO is entitled to say he prefers an 8 team comp, he not on the NZR.
And Hansen is getting pasted for saying he thought NZR should bend and buckle for Aus rugby.
You don't think you twisting things. Or just forgetting how many team Aus had.
Whoops just remembered! Sorry zer0
Dan. NZRU Chairman confirmed they were looking at an 8-10 team tournament as per the Aratipu report. If there’s 5 Kiwi teams and PI team in a 8-10 team competition, there only 2-4 spots for the 5 Aussie Super Rugby teams.
There was actually 5 teams in Super Rugby AU when this report was released, and NZRU were having discussion with the Force so don’t pretend the Force weren’t a factor.
NZ Players Union Chairman - Rob Nichols
Nichols also blasted NZR for negotiating with Western Force over the Australian franchise joining Super Rugby Aotearoa in 2022.
“Why would you have a competition that involves the Western Force and not New South Wales, Queensland and the Brumbies? That splits Australian rugby. New Zealand players, we don’t want to be part of that. Not unless it’s an absolute last resort. It’s not our starting point.”
The problem is we need to make sure key areas are included such as Perth Melbourne the west of Sydney I hope it can work as I think it would be good but not sure long term if it’s viableNot across what would need to likely be 3 divisions of national club competition.
If there were such interest then I like to think that it would require a similar approach to that of MLR in the States. Establish a strict criteria and welcome bids from clubs/interested parties to enter EOIs. MLR uses a licence fee ($10m USD) and provision of 3-5 years of operating capital ($15m USD minimum). The licence fee goes toward covering expenses of the league office plus travel etc.
If they can raise the capital and meet the criteria teams enter. If not then unfortunately there has to be the haves and have nots and those that cannot will be the have nots. They could still play in their traditional clubs. AS the teams in the national comp will need somewhere for the reserve teams to play. It's the only way I can see it happening.
TT has been out of sight but as now approaching start of it soon starting to think about how our teams will fare. Reds and Brumbies definitely should be competitive but rest not so much. Despite the usual kiwi bleating of self interest of cutting oz teams I expect will happen (which actually does not help the growth of the game long term in the region) I would like in order of desired interest:
1. Open borders policy - but yep I don't see NZRU having the vision of twiggy to see the benefits of this. Hence see 2.
2. Continue to look at Argentina and South Africa for players that could address our depth issues to compete with NZ. Note I don't like being pushed into position for this but see 1. But I would rather see 5 teams in key regions across oz with 80% oz players and 20% overseas players then having only 4 regions with 100% oz players. We are in a war for fan eyeballs and market positioning with AFL and NRL who are slowly killing us off with their expansion - we need to hold onto the footprint we have and longer term expand
3. Continue to ensure we have domestic pro product alongside TT product so we don't have all eggs in TT basket. There are different variations of domestic product we could have to keep it alive from 6 regions one round competition with no finals to current 2 round format with finals. But definitely look at 6th team can add if commercial opportunity presents itself.
Whatever happens we should be doing this regardless. In fact, it's likely the best way to fill out extra teams. Promoting a mix of bringing Aus eligible players home and Argentine/South African/T2 players for new teams.
Agree - as that is in effect what Japan is doing and which we need to do to improve overall quality of competition as well as grow the footprint. We create a better competition that provides wider regional footprint and fan interest creates more pro pathways and opportunities to grow our game. We won't compete for relevance in crowded football market by shrinking our footprint. Force and lesser extent Rebels set example here which imo should be continued to be exploited.
