I also watch most of the Quins games, in fact I was at the Quins v Sale game in December oh what we wouldn't give for crowds like that at Super rugby. Anyway I digress, Louis Lynagh is a good winger with strong attacking instincts and a touch of X factor even if he lacks absolute top line speed. However, it is not his attack that has him not starting for Quins unfortunately he is a bit of a turnstile in defense and in the UK unless you can tackle and have good defensive reads you will seriously struggle.

I was a bit surprised that Jordan Petaia is getting offers to go to NRL, NFL and Japan. I didn't realise he is good mates with Markymark and might follow him into the NRL. Nothing decided and hope we get to keep him.

It was supposed to be decided upon in December, but I thought NRL commission already had the mechanisms to allow it on a case by case scenario anyway, just wasn’t a broad range dispensation

Pretty sure it’s how the Roosters signed Marky Marky (salary cap sombrero jokes aside) so it’s probably been sorted, they’re just not shouting it from the rooftops. The NRL claim to have the best players in the country already, no need for them to go on a rugby player signing spree.

I do think their claims of targeting rugby players was a pretty clear shot across the bow for Eddie and Hamish who had been mouthing off a bit about bringing more NRL players across after JS.
It wouldn’t surprise me if the NRL don’t chase any other players, but they’ve made it clear they’ve got the means to do it. Just adds an extra layer of pressure to these super rugby teams really.

Given the growth in revenue of the NRL, they more then have the capacity to do it. The risk/concern with salary dispensation for cross-code signings is that it disrupts the balance of existing salary cap and creates loopholes for teams to exploit, or potentially even creates incentives for NRL players to switch to rugby for a season just so that they can be paid more on return because.
A handful have already tried to do a off-season in Japan. Whilst NRL might see value in destabilising rugby union further by taking the key marketable players, they are also quite reserved on maintaining balance/integrity (loose term) in the salary cap and equalisation measures.

A move for JP and maybe a couple more talented backs would be an obvious move by the NRL. It says you paid an absolute fortune for a young kid who hasn't really proven anything yet and we can just nip in and take anyone we like and you can't do anything about it. Know your place little brother. It is a dick swinging move and one that RA hasn't got the financial clout to do anything about.

Isn't shouting it out the whole point? Marky Mark (Nawaqanitawase) is great but he's still just a winger which is one of the least important roles in the team (and yes fuck all of you dumb fluffybunnys who think wingers aren't important in Union).

When they have double the salary cap they can sign a guy to at least what they are on in Rugby and see how it goes.
I don't think they will pillage our players right now. They do have 2 state leagues that cull the herd for them. Our issue may come when they announce another side into the NRL. Suddenly they are after 30 Full-timers and development players comp wide.

The only saving grace there will be if they go with a second NZ side and look to poach from New Zealand first for name recognition. Would still likely see a few of our guys lured over as player movement happens, particularly in and around the under 20s, but the pressure would fall more on someone else for once.

I don't see the 2nd NZ side happening. If I was the NRL I let the Warriors continue to be popular. They are every chance of becoming as forgettable next year if they slump back into the pack.

It'll likely all come down to financial backing from outside the game, which is what has PNG in the box seat right now. Plenty could happen there to jeopardize that though and the Warriors recent success with fans will have the NRL tempted to capitalize in NZ, even if it risks squeezing it dry. They've been out there saying they'll recruit a marquee All Black or two as well, which the other NRL sides will probably look favourably on for putting less pressure on their existing talent base. But I do agree, they're probably 4th or 5th down the list at the moment.
Hard to say the effect the other bids will have on us. Brisbane or Perth would probably have the most impact, PNG might struggle to draw players from the open market depending on the structure - Port Moresby based it'll definitely be a problem, but the split Brisbane option won't have as many issues. The North Sydney Pasifika Bears would probably look to the pacific and New Zealand a bit more than a strictly Australian side.

Think Perth would be a big hit to Rugby. Immediate competition in the local market and they have the resources to push development people and a Woman's side straight in as well. No idea of the local appetite for League. PNG is interesting. If they are based there they are going to struggle to recruit players who will make them competitive. Especially the ones with families.
