Totally agree with you. It's unfortunate, but the ARU and NSW Rugby have never looked after Junior Rugby players and if the trend continues, with the AFL doing a great job, Rugby may struggle to field good quality senior teams in years to come.

Matt McGahan is son of Legend Kiwi Back Rower Hugh McGahan and comes from a Rugby Nusery called Mt Albert Grammar, which has procuded Joe Stanley, Olo Brown, Matthew Ridge and also Sonny Bill Williams. Also at the Storm is Cade Umaga, son of All Black Great, Tana.

That's ridiculous - if a kid's playing rugby and deserves selection in a rep team he should be selected irespective of whether he's contracted to an NRL side, or wants to give the game away once he's left school, or votes Labor, or has no fashion sense, or once admitted to enjoying the occasional muck about game of Aussie Rules with his mates ... if he's the best in his position he gets picked.

I agree with just about everything you said here, in fact, I vote Labor and played the game (without any ill effects to those around me). I played league, too, as many of us did, and probably as the majority of rugby players have - at least those who grew up outside the private school system - meaning that they were free to play other sports on the weekend.
However, I do think it is a bit self-defeating to give any sort of preferment to kids who have already signed NRL contracts. There is absolutely nothing in it for rugby, it causes the next best player in the position to miss out (which might be a tipping point for him) , and allows the NRL and its followers to have the best of both worlds. If a kid has already chosen to lie in the NRL bed, let him stay there, and enjoy the fleas.

I cannot agree that it is a good idea to select kids with NRL contracts to Aust Schoolboy tours.
The object of the tour is about development for the future.
Pick & stick boys, if they jump on the free tour & subsequently sign with the devil, JON should make them pay it back.

I reckon if it's good enough for a lad to play union for his school, it's good enough for him to be allowed to tour with Oz Schools regardless of what he does after he leaves the school gates for the last time.
I appreciate the counter arguments as well as anybody, always have, and have known them longer than most, but let's remember that, at school, it's only a game.

As far as I'm concerned if the ARU help fund the Oz Schools tours, which I believe they do, then they are entitled to place restrictions on selections, viz. players who are already signed to rugby league clubs.
I have read somewhere a long time back that players had to sign loyalty agreements before they toured. Not sure if this still happens.

I think you find that Matt McGahn went tp St Peter's in Auckland the same school as his dad, he also played jnr rugby union in club rugby, apparantly doing very well in the U20 mungo comp.

Firstly hello torn Hammy. I agree with what you say, however young men chasing careers as professional footballers feel they need a foot in both doors these days. I don't agree with it but thats how they and their promoters ( parents/managers ) direct them. unfortunately these young men are of the belief that if they can not get signed to a deal ( contract either Rugby or league) their dream is over. little do they realise (their promoters) that these young men are swallowed up and sign away their individual leverage way to early.

Talking about the AFL the old man is a sportsmaster at a Public High School on the Northern side of the Harbour. AFL bloke scheduled a meeting which ended up being a waste of time.
Conversation went like this :
We are running a competition in your area on Friday afternoon's we will do this, this and this to help you.

Why would I take my kids out of class on a Friday afternoon for AFL? He promptly handed out the free tickets that the Waratahs had provided him with to targeted kids to get them interested in the sport :laughing:
